Phd is no more the intellectual powerhouse that it used to be. You have all manner of persons with doctorate degrees in Ghana and one can hardly decipher who is an academic holder or honorary holder. Why are people obsessed with honorary academic titles that they did not challenge their brains for? Even Mahama got one. What is the meaning of an honorary degree after all? And why would they not confer honorary "masters" or "bachelors" but Doctorate? Well, the short route to fame is laced always with wealth, so it is just a race for titles amongst people with cash clout. No poor person, regardless of his/her intellect will get an honorary doctorate degree. Made for people with clout, so any buffoon can just add that to his plethora of non-descript titles.

Beside phony PhDs all over the place, what is also worrying are PhD programs across the length and breadth of almost all the universities in Ghana. Are we adhering to international standards before awarding actual PhDs to deserving students? The writer of the article should make public this issue or else our third degrees would soon not be recognized internationally. Again we need to be wary of some of such holders of this degree or else we would be duped into offering them high positions. There have been cases of some people who posed to have PhDs, and were employed to teach in our universities, but were unable to deliver. These are concerns that should be raised with the Ghanaian public.
