I think govt is rushing the free shs and that could have problems with funding. I would've preferred a situation where the free shs was delayed for more savings and funding sources to be secured. I would have wished rather govt concentrated on building libraries, computer labs, science labs, trg teachers, providing key performance indicators for headmasters, giving autonomy to school heads. After achieving all this then we could then attempt free shs. As we speak now schools in the north can't reopen bcoz of feeding grants that have delayed for three terms. If the free shs is going to be treated this way then we have real trouble on our hands. Good write up.

Let's not be deceived into believing that,we can ve sustainable free quality SHS in this country. How free is the public basic schools, the school feeding at basic schools don't cover even one-third but we re being told day students at the SHS would be fed once everyday. The capitation grants is in arrears for the whole 2016/2017 academic.Pupils re paying examination fees.When NPP government under J.A Kuffour introduced the capitation grant in 2004/2005 academic year,come to 2009 before they handed power to NDC led by the late J.E.A Mills,two tranches of the capitation grants was in arrears.

years? What is the meaning of that quality? Ndc mention quality with no explanation so what do you mean by that? I remember in the NPP campaign they promised to take good care of the teachers by giving them affordable housing,which even they can buy if they want, they will be giving loans for cars and they will be treated the way president Kuffuor started by allowing nurses and teachers to import cars with duty free so who is not going to work good in a conducive environment, ndc give us a break if you couldn't do it in 8 years you can't do it in 100 years,allow those with their free SHS vision do their own thing because they know what they are doing and they understand quality education is equally good.

The writer of this article deserves some plaudits for making the above observation. He hit the nail right on the head.
However, if education is critical in Ghana's development equation, does it not follow in logic that the continuous membership in WAEC is detrimental to our development efforts? How can Ghana have the same development with say, the Gambia or Sierra Leone or even Nigeria and Liberia? Does any of these members have the same development needs as Ghana?
Ghana's development need is not the same as the Gambia or say Liberia and Sierra Leone, and by using the same curriculum to test our future leaders we are in fact subsuming the low educational standards that pertain in these countries. I repeat, if the purpose of education is to meet Ghana's development needs, then Ghana, the Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and even Nigeria are not at par in development level and it is the more reason Ghana should opt out of WAEC and develop its own curriculum that meets its specific development needs.
Secondly, many advanced countries fund their education through property taxes. If those who own big houses in East Legon and other affluent areas in the country, then they can afford property taxes to fund Ghana's education. People in government must use their heads because as I have said many times, nation building is not for idiots- nation building is an act of common sense, but it appears our leaders are bereft of this specific ingredient called common sense.
There is sufficient funds in Ghana's economy to fund free SHS, and only intelligent people can harness the resources necessary to implement free SHS. Ghana without question can easily fund free SHS if the our governments stop giving tax holidays to rich corporations.
