Lord Maulay’s address to the British Parliament on 2nd February 1835: "I have travelled across the length and breadth of Africa and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in the country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.”

The more useful information we got from that website is the idea that the origins of that Ministry actually goes back 1975, during the Acheampong dictatorship.
None of the "Objectives" they identify on that website today is in truth an "objective".
Meanwhile, on the other side, we are reading the Minister, Ms. Otiko Djaba, is in a confrontation with a Chief apparently because she caused a meeting to be scheduled without informing that Chief.
But, before all that, Akufo Addo had himself crowned a Chief in Jamestown the other day.
It is all one big mess of a confused "massive", and so many politicians who seen to have little clue about what governance ought to mean and do, in the face of so many developmental challenges.
Peace!

Hi Bro,
Long time, long see (or hear).
Anyway you have not digressed at all. I have read the SIL piece, an issue I have consistently raised in many of my articles.
Also Selassie Ameko did not stray far from the historical truth at all.
As a matter of fact I have addressed the issue of technology and we, I mean Ghana and Africa, need to invest (R$D) in this area of human development.
Technology is indeed "everything." Technology is our salvation, if you ask me!
As far as slavery and colonialism, I have even discussed Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" (book/movie) in one of some of my articles, and this work "partially" explains the ease with which the West conquered the rest of the world.
But that said, thanks you for bringing up the issue of technology again because I raise the issue again in my next article.
But Bro, finally, did you listen to Marcus du Sautoy's recent NPR interview, last week? How about his book "The Great Unknown: Seven Journeys to the Frontiers of Science"?
Great insights there.
Enjoy the weekend.
Thanks.

Thanks for bringing my attention to that great Oxford luminary. Will certainly listen to the podcast.
Another factor that seems to confound our understanding of the universe is the human brain itself. We are severely limited and can only comprehend as far as the 100 billion cells inside our skulls can allow.
A simple example is the whole concept of "a beginning" and "an end", "cause and effect", leading to such dead-end arguments like "who created the Creator", "what do you call the region outside the universe", and so on. And yet, the same brain has no problem understanding that in geometry, a circle has no beginning or an end, to cite just one simple example
The human brain stands in the way of understanding certain concepts in Physics.

Kwabena Yeboah,
Yes, it is a painful sight, isn't it?
Sure, that is one aspect of the culture that needs radical change, (i.e., modernization), if you will.
But, we hope you are not losing it. You neglected to provide any useful commentary, we see.
Normally, photos of that type will be captioned "File Photo" by Ghanaweb.
And Francis Kwarteng has responded he did not send that photo to Ghana.
So, what do you mean by "Management of Ghanaweb should be censored"?
By whom?
The owners of Ghanaweb?
For whom?
You do not think Ghanaweb is a journalistic enterprise in the traditional sense, do you?
From the little we know, Ghanaweb is a Ghana-interest website. But, Ghanaweb is not "Journalism in Ghana".
Maybe that is the best thing, about Ghanaweb, ModernGhana, and some of them.
Because at least, Ghanaweb, like those others, will publish articles "the journalistic media" in Ghana will not publish because (1) they do not know the writers, (2) writers will not pay them, (3) the writers are in the wrong political party, and/or (4) it is a critique of the government of their favorite political party, etc.
Tell us how you arrived at the conclusion that Mr. Kwarteng is a journalist.
Maybe it is time you also took a chance and wrote articles to fully argue your case(s), even under a moniker. (You have the address to Ghanaweb now, thanks to Mr. Kwarteng).
Given above considerations, your attempt to impugn "journalism" on Mr. Kwarteng and to imply that he may be an "idiot with pen and paper in hand, or a laptop computer", is a bit shallow, precisely the kind of position that is not critically informed, reasoned, or communicated.
More to your substantive point!
You do not seem to imply the photo is contrived, do you?
So, if it an accurate depiction of one of those events when none of the victims' faces are shown and are NOT recognizable, what is there to talk about censoring?
Surely, you must know that by that photo, those adults (MEN and WOMEN) watching over those poor little girls have most likely absolutely no qualms about the practice of FGM.
How are we all, including WHO, supposed to see, understand, and appreciate the problem, and to help arrest, if we must begin to sanitize/censor those types of images and artifacts of "culture" that in fact need modernization?
Come on!
Greetings.

Where is your support for this statement and what does it have to do with the practice occurring in Ghana: "Finally, we should also want to make it clear that female genital mutilation was and still is practiced among whites, and in the white world at large, in the West . . . ." Both titles you cite as supporting documentation are written in the context of HISTORY, not the present. And even if true, what does that do to elucidate anything about the practice still occurring in Ghana? Are you saying it started because whites once practiced it, therefore explaining its adoption and perpetuation in Ghana? Please.

Did you check out the references?
Please go back and read the first three paragraphs in context again!
Then read Sarah Rodriguez’s book “Female Circumcision and Clitoridectomy in the United States: A History of a Medical Treatment.”
In case you did not read the third paragraph well, closely, let me repeat it here for you in part (Dr. Rodrigueuz, author of the afore-referenced book, had this to say about clitoridectomy/female cosmetic genital surgery in the US today):
"This practice IS STILL ALIVE and WELL in the United States as part of the trend in FEMALE COSMETIC GENITAL SURGERY...."
Clitoridectomy is one of the four major types of female genital mutilation/cutting/circumcision I described in my book!
Still, some aspects of what Dr. Rodrigeuz calls "FEMALE COSMETIC GENITAL SURGERY" will be called female genital mutilation/cutting/circumcision if traditional doctors did it in Africa.
So it is all about political correctness, geography (time and place), language, technology, and what have you! Mind you, moral and cultural relatism also shapes the discussion you and I are having today. For instance, many traditional Muslim countries/societies will frown upon what Dr. Rodriquez calls "female cosmetic genital surgery" being done in their hospitals.
And here is the first paragraph:
"Clitoridectomy and female circumcision, practices often labeled as female genital mutilations, are not just controversial cultural rites performed in foreign countries..."
Again, in my article I also quoted The Center for Repruductive Rights:
"Type I (also referred to as 'clitoridectomy'): the excision of the prepuce with or without excision of the clitoris."
Learn to read closely.
Thanks.

The writer says FGM in Ghana is practised in the "three Northern regions and the Brong-Ahafo Region". FGM is not really a regional practice, but a TRIBAL/CULTURAL practice. In Ghana it is practised predominantly by some tribes in the Upper-west Region and to some extent in the Upper-East Region. It is rarely practised in the Northern region if at all -- Gonjas and Dagombas who dominate the Northern Region don't do it.
And it's NOT a religious or Islamic practice as some suggest. In the Upper-West region for instance, the tribe that does it is predominantly Catholic and to some extent Muslim, but they don't do it because Islam or Christianity says they should do it. It's simply a tribal/cultural practice.
Talking about Zongos, Hausas who are Muslims and dominate Zongos don't it.
