I struggle to catch the drift of the statement that teaching is a political act but when we remember consciously what we are doing, it moves from political to culture. The word culture from its Latin etymology 'colere' implies to cultivate. Political act is rather a component of culture. All these blablablabla support the assertion that education is nothing but indoctrination to be aware of indoctrination. I strongly agree with you that former African colonies' educational system must be disentangled from its colonial frameworks. However, this could be achieved when Francis Kwarteng and some of his charismatic preachers stop peddling ignorance that everything African is demonic. The emphasis on educational revolution goes beyond pedagogy to curriculum design. Africans cannot also live in an island, albeit the modern technological or global village. We must develop our culture into its peak and trade it with others. How re you Francis?

We have not read the book by Prof Asante. From this review by Francis Kwarteng, it appears the book is directed at an African-American audience, not to say some of the lessons may not apply in the African/Ghanaian context.
We believe current literature solidly supports the idea that for "black children" in the hegemonic context of white preferential and customary access to unequal benefits, including education opportunities, the absence of males in the classroom is a primary factor in academic progress/self-actualization and success of black students.
Further, if we are going to talk about the "political" and culture, we surely must also include "religion" in the mix. We do not know what is said about that one in the book. On this later score, if we may channel Nana Yaw Osei (Padigo), one would have wished Africa was long ago an island in deed and fact.
ITEM: One of the uses for which we maintain a presence on Twitter is the capavbility it offers the user to practically tabulate what matters are important to the user. We recently tweeted 2 items that bear directly on the big questions Francis Kwarteng has thrown unto the table in reviewing Professor Asante's book, "Revolutionary pedagogy: Primer for teachers of black children", in easy-to-appreciate-form.
The first appeared on these same pages and the latter, on "Black Voices". Here is additional information and links for those interested:

“But to educate you have to teach and you cannot be a good teacher until the pupil has learned” (Prof. Molefi Kete Asante, p. 14). Are you suggesting that to be a good teacher you have to become a surgeon so that you can open the skull of your student and stuff in the brain what you intend to teach? There is a wise saying that goes "you can force the camel to the river but you cant force it drink". Probably you need to be a teacher to get my drift.
