One of the reasons I stopped writing articles for Ghanaweb is evidenced by the commentators on the trail above me. Somebody has spent quality time to put out what is arguably a scholarly article, instead of you debating the issues raised in the article objectively and dispassionately, all that you can do is to jump in without probably reading the whole article with your stupid comments that do no good and contribute nothing except insults.
Thanks Yao Tsikata for the article.
You made all the right calls but then for me you overlooked one thing: which is ethnicity and politics. The call for the creation of the Oti Region started in the Acheampong's regime. That was when I began to pick up snippets of it from the daily newspapers even when I was a mere A' Level student. Perhaps my antennas were tuned to matters of that nature because I was reading Government, Economics and Geography at the time.
The call for the formation of the Oti Region has always been a political agenda by the chiefs and people who reside in that area, who are ethnically non-Ewes.
So for me, I think turning the lens towards why they have been calling for this since the mid-1970s even under military regimes would do us all favour. Could it be the non-Ewe indigenes feel like their interests and issues are crowded out by their vociferous Ewe compatriots?
Then the next thing is, what has the Ewes got to lose if such a region is created? They wouldn't have been the first region in the annals of post-independence Ghana's history to have been divided, Ashanti was the first one when Kwame Nkrumah carved out Brong Ahafo Region out of the pre-existing Ashanti Region created by the colonialists. Acheampong was to follow suite with the creation of Upper West Region out of the former Upper Region, rendering the remaining portion Upper East Region and also the Greater Accra Region out of the Eastern Region.
The carving out of the aforementioned regions did not lead to the collapse of the regions from whence they came from, rather it revitalized and induced more capital and development to the newly created regions especially their regional capital cities which wouldn't have happened at the rate that they are today, had they continued to remain in their former regions, with the exception of Accra.
And the argument that the new regions were created for effective local government administration purposes is bonkers, for if it were so Northern Region would have been chopped up at the same time Brong Ahafo was created because at that time the Northern Region included even today's Upper Regions East and West.
So then what is the main reason driving the creation of the Oti Region, it seems nobody else is having a pussy hiss over the dividing up of the other regions demarcated for this purpose? Why is it all of a sudden the Ewes seems to be having some shivers? Could it be they fear losing some political clout and weight? How has economic development spread from the coast to Krachi and Nkwanta areas, the heart of the proposed Oti region? Let's speak truth to power, I think, it could be the indigenes of the proposed Oti Region have felt marginalised by their Ewe compatriots all over the years since independence and this is how they think they can divert development dollars to their areas. Ethnically they are more of Akan ethnicity than Ewe and this could be the undercurrents driving this agenda, they think they have to get out of Ewe hegemony. This is my two pence, this is what I think, not that I endorse the creation of Oti Region. Region or no region they would still be in this boat called Ghana.
We have to raise our standards up, decentralize governance through proper local government architecture. Let the people elect their own regional ministers and district chief executives so that they can hold the politicians to account at the local level and not being played by some political puppeteer called Mister President in Accra. Local needs and aspirations do not necessarily line up with national needs and aspirations. True elected representative governance at the local level would die down these agitations for new regions and deepen democracy and accountability.
Thanks!

Those who DO NOT KNOW, THE PRESENT DAY GHANA ITSELF IS A CREATION , AND THE VOLTA REGION IS PART OF THAT CREATION BY THE ALMIGHTY GOD HIMSELF!
OUR LATE FIRST PRESIDENT, OSAGYEFO DR. KWAME NKRUMAH WAS THE ONLY ONE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD SO HEAVILY ANOINTED BY THE ALMIGHTY GOD TO CARRYOUT HIS WILL FOR ALL THE PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT, SPREAD ACROSS THE WORLD DUE TO THE ENSLAVEMENT OF AFRICANS FOR THE PAST 600 YEARS!
THE NEW PRESIDENT, AKUFO ADDO IS BLATANTLY GOING AGAINST THE SECOND MOVE OF THE ALMIGHTY , GOD TO FREE HER PEOPLE !
THE LORD HAS ALREADY MOVED, BUT I WILL NOT TELL WHAT HAS BEEN REVEALED TO ME.
THERE IS A BATTLE GOING ON BETWEEN THE ALMIGHTY GOD,AND SATAN IN REGARDS TO AFRICA, AND HER PEOPLES.
IT IS ON , AND IT IS VERY FRIGHTENING! IT IS SPIRITUAL, BUT WILL CERTAINLY MANIFEST IN THE PHYSICAL - AS IT DID WHEN THE LORD TOOK,TRAINED ,AND BROUGHT DR. KWAME NKRUMAH BACK TO THE GOLD COAST TO SET A TIME-TABLE FOR INDEPENDENCE.
GHANAIANS MUST KNOW THIS, THAT GHANA'S INDEPENDENCE WAS NOT FOR GHANA ONLY, AS DR. NKRUMAH CATEGORICALLY STATED, BUT FOR THE WHOLE AFRICA ; AND FOR A HOME FOR ALL OF AFRICA'S DESCENDANTS SPREAD ACROSS THE WORLD.
PLEASE, ANYONE WHO CAN REACH THE CURRENT PRESIDENT WHO WANTS TO CUT THE VOLTA REGION INTO TWO, AND THOSE IN SUPPORT OF IT ARE ALL WORKING AGAINST THE MOVE OF THE CREATOR OF HEAVEN , AND EARTH , THE ALMIGHTY GOD, JEHOVAH !
THE FATHER GOD ,THAT I COME TO KNOW , DOES NOT LIE,BUT TRUTHFUL ; AND THE MIGHTINESS OF HIS POWER ,AS HE HAS BEEN SHOWING ME , IS VERY , VERY, FRIGHTENING IN THE PHYSICAL AS I SEE WITH MY OWN EYES !
MR. AKUFO ADDO 'S ORIGINAL INTENTION IS TO PARTITION ONLY THE VOLTA REGION , BUT USING OTHER REGIONS TO HIDE IT.
PLEASE THOSE CAN REACH THEM , LET THEM KNOW THAT NO HUMAN BEING CAN STAND THE WRATH OF THE ALMIGHTY GOD !
I PRAY FOR THEM , BUT I AM NOBODY BEFORE THE LORD,OR STOP THE ALMIGHTY GOD ! FOR , HE HAS ALREADY MOVED !!!

Congratulations Dr Tsikata! You have presented good arguments but you have failed to provide a suitable solution to the problem of creating 2 volta régions. It is true no person can stand the wrath of God but remember this is a political issue and can only be solved by the politicians. I fully endorse our president's decision to split the present volta region into 2 separate régions, to be known as North Eastern Region and South Eastern region thus abolishing the Volta Region completely. This will block the way for the so called Western Togoland State which had never existed. It was the German Missionaries who named that area as Togoland, meaning " TOR (River) GODO (beyond))= behind or beyond the River. So it should not be considered as a Region in the first place.

. What then is the NPP government trying to do with partitioning with the sole intention of dividing the ewe culture? This is a political move and we will not support this move. The present volta region joined Ghana through plebiscite and can get separated in the future which is now hence the move by those they sent to court for treason. If the other cultures do not value the ewes and the people of the volta region are seen inferior through political commentator by political elements, what then do you want us to do than to be on our own and be able manage our affairs? We are demanding independence from Ghana. We want other areas of the volta region added to other regions back. We have capable men and women who are highly educated and talented to help develop our volta land if we become independent.

Great educative piece. I for one have been against this idea ever since it was mooted out but l didn't know how to defend it. What has moved me actually is the point on the cost of creating the said regions. Already one of the policies of Nana Addo is to scale down government expenditure. Another argument is that the partition will create jobs. Here I beg to differ. The only jobs to be created will be the ward, district and regional administrative workers. But have we evaluated the administrative costs involved ? A mere duplication of costs. Is Nana serious in reducing costs, then why the duplication? Think of the to be established offices, staff, stationery, cars etc etc. Why can't Nana and his advisers note that the costs of the creation will better service rather the one district one dam policy. They should find a better way of creating a name for themselves than that ill informed idea. Thanks for the good piece.

DrProsper Tsikata pieceis very educative yet he miss the point, there are some Voltarians who wants to declare Volta Region independent of Ghana, yet he didn't say anything about it but he was able to compare Asante Region to Volta in terms of distance, that's where Voltarians always make mistakes with every write ups. This always changes the beauty of the narratives.Everywhere in the world there are bigger states and smaller states,Dr Tsikata you are awere than tribal differences will always determine such factors, the people of northern Volta are not Ewes and as such want their own region,it is amajor factor, though you might not belief it,if Ahafo region is created Ashanti will lose Tepa and Sabronum which are both Ahafo ano North and South in Ashanti region, but we don't care because the authority of Asantehene cut across border lines.
What we want to hear from you Prosper is are those in northern Volta happy with those of Southern Volta? If not why do you want them to stay in the Region? There are people in Northern Western region who are not happy with Takoradi, they want a region others like Northern Region Brong Ahafo etc lets be honest and do the right thing for all.
