We do not understand DEPRESSION in Ghana. We take it for granted and that is why this student did not reach out to others, or if she did might not have been taken serious

As a society we need to do more to understand mental illness. A list of resources currently available should be shared and made publicly available. We also need to do more, as I don't think what we have is sufficient to meet the needs of Ghanaians.

This is part of the so called civilized nonsense. In Ghana or Africa for that matter suicide is not an option. People don't marry from families that have history of suicides. If this writer's statistics is something to go by then why should Ghanaians follow what is being done in UK and USA when the incidence of suicide is on the rise? I'm sure the writer is pro gay if he is not gay himself. Honestly, if she really committed suicide then let the death be treated the typical Ghanaian way. This will serve as a deterrent to others.

Papa Appiah, thank you for writing this important article to bring attention and educate on Mental Health issues. The problem in Ghana is that we don't really understand Stress/Depression and how they affect our mental health. And as a society, we seem to have negative attitudes towards mental illness.
Life is a hard journey. One could easily go through some horrible and hard times: particularly, relationships, unattainable aspirations and expectations, money issues, academic pressures, employment/professional issues.
The suicide of the KNUST student should raise concerns about Stress & Depression[mental health issues] in our schools and universities. Please, don't suffer in silence. Don't feel ashamed to speak out if you're going through very dark times in your life. It is important to tell friends and family, and also seek counselling.
