Let me make a few unnecessary 'observations':
First, you state "... in the face of abstract poverty that engulfed the nation".
I tried hard to imagine and visualise poverty in its ABSTRACT 'form' but I could't manage to get a hang of it. The poverty that engulfed the nation then, and even now, was so vivid, real and concrete that one could literally and graphically see it, smell it, touch it, hear it and taste it! It was, and still is, an everyday statement and a loud cry day and night! It's no ABSTRACTION: it was, and is, concrete and stark and severe!
What made the poverty worse then is when it is juxtaposed with the stupidities that you have rightly mentioned of some of the acts of the leaders then! When concrete poverty was rendering the people asunder, the president was doling out gifts of cars and houses to particular persons and his wife was moving on greedily as a money-making machine! They were taking the politics of clientelism - and the greed of acquisition - to a height so vexatious to the socially and politically conscious Ghanaian!
Second, you state: "You see, many Ghanaians are not good historians and so they do not look back like historians do."
The number culprit was the then president himself. Having been a student of History and readily seizing on any opportunity to announce it, he should have known better than most Ghanaians the hard lessons of history of governance of Ghana! Leadership awash in sordid opulence in the throes of national socio-economic hardship does not elections win in Ghana! It can even be fatal; ask Kutu and the others! Not learning from history and not guided by its hard lessons, he (the immediate former president) ended up chalking up a few 'histories' of his own! The first incumbent to serve only one term under the 4th Republic! The first incumbent to lose elections by the widest, and the most disgraceful, margin in Ghana's history! All this was epitomised by the embarrassing way he was booted out of the state residence that he wanted to acquire as a part of his pension package!
Finally, as to the NDC's current search for answers to the question of why they lost the elections, they don't need a wish of good luck! There is more than enough material for them to use! The acts of their own leaders in government then are good material evidence!

1. The Rawlingses do not live in the same "modest" house. Rawlings stole the state-owned Ridge bungalow on leaving office, not to mention several state vehicles. Then there was the mysterious fire that occurred after Rawlings' demands for renovation to Atta-Mills had been ignored. Later he bullied "Atta, the mortuary man" to have the place rebuilt according to Rawlings' plans and his own contractor all at state expense. After the new mansion had been completed, Rawlings complained to the media that only the curtains had been provided, not the furnishings!!! Yes, you get a free mansion and then the state had to provide you with curtains, rugs, furniture etc - that's "modest" living!
Konadu Rawlings, using the 31st December Women's Movement as a front, acquired Nsawam Cannery, Accra Cocoa Processing Factory, and a host of GIHOC/GNTC properties at give-away prices, no other bids considered! Later, she filed for a judgment debt and was paid, thanks to the corrupt judiciary, US5 million dollars. That's also the fruit of very "modest living"!
