At a time when Prof Lungu is publishing what he describes as material written long ago but only now known about the same events described here, we need a fuller account than what is presented here so that we can try to come to our own conclusions about these events.
Tawiah Adamafio's account is from one side of the events and we need that too to make sense of these things. I hope more of Adamafio's account can be made available on these pages.
Oh, me, I was in primary school when Kulungugu happened and too young to have an opinion of it myself...

At least 2 aspects of this account from memory by A.R. Gomda aligns with the detailed account on the other side, "from 1964".
READ: "...Olympio did not go beyond the normal announcement asking non-citizens not to engage in such activities within Togolese territory. That did not end the matter as opposition elements continued their activities which shook Kwame Nkrumah to his marrow; his clampdown on suspects saying it all about his frustration and readiness to deal ruthlessly with such persons...".
ALIGNMENT: (1) The Togolese government did not only take action to stop infiltrations by Ghanaian exiles and others back into Togo, (2) Several Togolese citizens and officials were actually involved in the planning against Nkrumah, They received financial support from Gbedemah.
FROM THE OTHER SIDE: "...On an October day in 1961, after closing hours, several people came together in one of the shops near the railway station in Lome. When they came to the door of the shop they looked around them nervously. Everything went on as in a classical detective story. There was the special knock on the door, the password and even several masks.
However, no masks could conceal from the citizens of Lome the too familiar figures of Togo's Minister of Internal Affairs, Teophil Mally,, and the Commissar of Police of the city of Lome, C. Dekon.
It was more difficult to identify the man with typical Anglo-Saxon features.
But the name of Leonard Desimus meant absolutely nothing to anyone who did not know that it was an alias of George Davis, representative of one of the most powerful western intelligence services. It was this man who declared the meeting of the conspirators open.
Gbedemah briefed the participants on that clandestine meeting on the situation in Ghana.
He said among other things that in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and other cities, especially in the north of the country, there are persons dissatisfied with Nkrumah's socialism and prepared to take very decisive steps against it. In this way the Americans thought to remove Gbedemah's rival at the last moment.
Happy days had begun for Gbedemah...".
In addition to Gbedemah and his "cousin", there is also the account on Salifu Imoro.

Prof Lungu, some of us are trying hard to come to terms with what we knew and heard as kids and what the archival material is now saying. It isn't that we are against your take on this material but rather that we want to approach the material with an open mind in an effort to arrive at the academic truth.
I don't know how old you are, Prof Lungu, but I was in Middle School when Nkrumah was overthrown. So I saw and heard of some of these things. I was too young to look at things more critically. But historical accounts afford all of us (those born then and those after) the possibility of assessing things in a proper light. That is why I've been interested in sifting the chaff from the wheat - something I think you should also be interested in even if I suspect your mind is already made up.
Mine is not and I am hungry for more material.
Gbedemah fell out with Nkrumah and had no interest in supporting his regime. That is understandable. Whether he already started plotting the overthrow of Nkrumah in 1961 is something I will suspend judgment on. Ditto his plans to assasinate him.
As an Anlo man from Anyako he would have relatives in Lomé and could certainly use the place as a haven for subversive activities against Nkrumah.
Olympio was a pal of Nkrumah's during the common fight for independence and he was also a pan-Africanist although not in the mold of Nkrumah. They also fell out. Both accused each other of subversive activities against their persons - something that doesn't come out from the stories here. Some Togolese still believe Nkrumah had a hand in Olympio's assassination even if there is no evidence.
And on and on the story goes. Some of us just want to know the truth more for academic reasons than for ideological ones...

Kweku,
Thanks greatly for the comment.
But, do not sweat it.
We are no journalists!
Including research on these matters, we devote many hours to every paper we commit to producing and promoting.
Nobody pays for what we do, nor are we influenced by any entity, other than the interest for a strong Unitary Ghana, accurate information about Ghana's, etc.
Hopefully, all of that helps to supports academic interests, also.
However, on account of the many ethnocentric and misguided persons and voices on these pages, we want to make sure we do not lose our voice when we take it upon ourselves to publicize the results of our research.
We have moved beyond only posting results of our research and being forced to defend ourselves and opinions in the comments sections of our own submissions.
So, upon conclusion of this multi-part paper (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)?, we will surely post the original document (and many others that will follow) on the Ghanahero.com/FOIB, webpage/site.
Greetings!
