RE: "Feature Article of Wednesday, 25 January 2017 Columnist: Kwarteng, Francis Unraveling the mystery surrounding Ken Ofori Atta’s offshore account"
So, Gbedemah was as Finance Minister.
Gbedemah had foreign accounts with cash he could not explain from the job he had. In the next installment, we touch on that.
On the other side.....
Ken Ofori Atta says he has still a Panama-type offshore account he will not talk more about except to add that it is not "significant".
How much?
Maybe North Tamale MP should have provided several intervals of cash for his selection, in poster board fashion:
Is it ---- or
$10 - $25,000
$25,001 - $100,000
$100,001 - $250,000
$250,001 - $500,000
$500,001 - $1,000,000
$1,000,001 - $5,000,000
... all the way up to $6 billion,
As you know already, $6 billion is the amount of money Ghana lost under Mahama through that crooked oil deal called Ghana Hybrid System that Serious Akufo Addo is in no hurry to repair.
On the other side.....
Ken Ofori Atta wants to be Finance Minister.
Serious Akufo Addo selected Ken Ofori Atta for the position of Ghana's Finance Minister.

So, yes right!
Imagine, 1957 America, it is in the middle of the Cold War, an "absent-minded" emissary from a black African country, Ghana, traveling from New Jersey, wonders into Howard Johnson restaurant and creates a fuss with the manager because they will not allow him and his African American attendants to sit and drink. (All this was before Brown vs Board of Education, Civil Rights Acts, etc., in America).
Kwame Nkrumah, the President lived most of his student days in America, long before Gbedemah, the business man, ever got to America. Gbedemah continues his trip to Maryland, then to Washington, where he talks about the soft drink incident in front of US Reps at the UN, in front to camera. The story blows up, and to cut the story short, Gbedemah gets invited to the White House for a "Private Audience" with the President of America.
Kwadwo wants us to know Gbedemah, in his altriustic and Ghana-centeredness, merely went to the meeting alone to talk about "...US to bring Ksizer Aluminum on board to fund the Akodombo dam...".
This is 2017, Kwadwo.
Move beyond coup plotter narratives!
READ: "...Minister (Gbedemah) not departing for London today as planned in order accept invitation by President to have breakfast with him alone October 10.5
"FOREIGN RELATIONS OF THE UNITED STATES, 1955–1957, AFRICA, VOLUME XVIII
131. Telegram From the Embassy in Ghana to the Department of State1
Accra, October 10, 1957—4 p.m.
147. Embtel 145.2 Keeping routine appointment made last week, I saw Prime Minister today.
Prime Minister was much annoyed with Gbedemah for creating fuss over incident. Prime Minister said he himself understood these things; that same thing had happened to member of his staff at Prime Ministers’ conference in London but he thought little of it and ordered nothing said; that some day “everything will be all right in US and England” and meanwhile Africans had to be understanding; that if he had experienced same incident as Gbedemah he would have kept quiet, which Gbedemah should have done.
Prime Minister made guarded but nevertheless uncomplimentary reference to Sutherland and said Sutherland should have known better than to let Gbedemah stop at restaurant in question. He speculated on possibility that somebody had maneuvered Gbedemah into provocative situation, adding that “Gbedemah is just the kind that can be maneuvered”.
Last night and this morning radio and press gave story heavy play, featuring President’s invitation to breakfast and my statement (Embtel 1443), with incident itself played down somewhat. Managing editor Time Magazine, (Alexander4) now visiting Accra told me today he thinks “we came out remarkably well” on radio and press coverage here.
In my presence today Prime Minister gave orders to Minister of Information5 to kill any further publicity over radio or through any other media controlled by GOG. Also in my presence he telephoned editor of party organ Evening News and gave same order. He then telephoned Daily Graphic, asked for “cooperation” and received assurance Graphic will atrophy story.
While Prime Minister may be somewhat jealous of Gbedemah’s White House visit, I am convinced he genuinely regrets what he [Page 381]regards as uncalled for fuss by Gbedemah. He asked me to inform my government that “this incident will not have the slightest effect on the happy relations between our two countries”.
Quick action by Department and White House has in my opinion effectively sterilized this wound which otherwise would have had serious consequences on West Coast of Africa.6"
Do some research, Kwadwo, and do not waste our time, next time.

Your story may be more informative and relevant than what Prof Lungu is doling out here in dribs and drabs.
The thing is that the Afro Gbede story isn't completely unknown. Many have written about it especially the Valco/Kaiser negotiations.
We have to know which parts of this anonymously authored piece may be the truth and which parts were just made up. Of course, Prof Lungu may not be in a position to know all the truth or even parts of it. And that goes for those of us commenting too.
But I have a feeling Prof Lungu is leaning towards taking the whole thing as the historical truth. He has certainly come to a conclusion, anyway.
Well, Afro Gbede is dead and gone. He lived to a ripe old age but left no memoirs. I am not aware of any biography of him either.
So just tell us what you know, not only to fill in the gaps but also to counter the narrative. I guess that's what Prof Lungu wants too.

Kweku,
Prof. Lungu has filled the details more admirably than I could have done. At best, I'd have just written a few words like how he was discriminated against and it got into the press and in reaction Eisenhower invited him to the White House.
Of course, he went for breakfast, and there is nothing like free breakfast at the White Horse. He got us the Akosombo Dam but at what cost? That's what Prof Lungu's stuff is about - how it happened that the Akosombo Dam project favoured Kaiser and America so much and Ghana was left with some crumbs, with parts which would have benefited Ghana jettisoned. Analyses I have read dwelt on that. These documents are giving us some clues - how flattered Gbedemah became Uncle Sam's Voice and pressurised to negotiate such a bad agreement.
At a recent international confab organised by Dr Raymond Atuguba, ACEP and others who support the obnoxious Hybrid System argued unconvincingly that the Concession System adopted for the Jubilee Fields and others could have been as good as the Production Sharing System had Ghana good negotiators, perhaps like them who are openly on the take from the FOCs and their govts. If you are accepting money from those you are negotiating with, what can be the outcome? Yes, we have been sold down the river yet again to the British and Americans! Our glorious ancestors - Gbedema - Rawlings - Kufuor - Mills -Mahama, they are all one of a kind, panhandlers and lackeys of the imperialists!
Btw, I mentioned the biography of Gbedemah authored by Prof. Amenumey emeritus with 14 other prominent Ewes for the Organisation for Research in Eweland (ORE). The US point man may still have some copies.

Yes, the Akosombo contract thing has been well researched and documented. And it is good to mention it in connection with our present oil contracts so we do not make similar mistakes again. It looks like in the Dam case the likes of Nkrumah knew the deal was not that favourable to us but it making a that or nothing deal.
The discrimination incident against Gbedemah is also well documented. Not quite so well that other info that Nkrumah didn't quite like it that Gbedemah was feted by the president (or was it his vice?) before he, Nkrumah, was. That thing of who was first and who was subordinate was still there.
But Prof Lungu's project here, from the two excerpts, so far seem to be painting Gbedemah in a thoroughly bad light as far as his relationship with Nkrumah was concerned. My concern is that, since the "scoop" is an anonymously authored piece (as opposed to Amenumey's researched work), how do we sift the truth from the lies or do we take it all hook, line and sinker?
Even before our independence, there were rumours of corruption going on within the ranks of the CPP although not involving Nkrumah himself. And Afro Gbede was a business man at heart. But Prof Lungu's story here goes beyond just corruption because it is accusing Gbedemah of not only being ideologically committed to nkrumahs ideas but of being downright capitalist oriented. Then he should have belonged to the matemeho camp but stuck to Nkrumah because of his personal ambitions (which politician is not ambitious?) And when he led NAL in the Second Republic elections he brought some of the organisational skills he learnt from the CPP days and some of the ideological leanings.
Yes, I remember you mentioned Amenumey's book on Afro Gbede. I will like to read that. But it doesn't seem to be a pure biography if it also deals with other prominent Ewes. So the definitive Gbedemah bio has not yet been written.

Well, my actual late night ride. Previous rather early.:-)
Yes, Nkrumah's reaction to the fuss Gbedemah made about the discrimination meted out to him is the secret that is out. However, Nkrumah only met Eisenhower after Gbedemah's breakfast meeting. And to be honest, during that period, Nkrumah had become a very willing and conservative partner of the West. It was only after realising that all the advice and friendship were not securing what he wanted that he turned to teh East in 1960/1, with the declaration of a republican status.
The emergence of corruptions in the CPP was real, not rumours. The Jibowu Commission which examined the rumpus in the cocoa industry, especially the cocoa tree cutting in order to fight the swollen shoot disease established the rampant corruption in the system.
Post indep. too? There was too and Gbedemah was in the midst. These things need to be researched properly, as more documents are available and some people would be more willing to talk. Why should they die with what they knew?
Hmm! When on a short visit to Ghana this Oct. to seem my old ailing mum, certain things became clearer. One of her old age negative musings was how the Nkrumah Minister with the big nose( her description when we were kids) was no doubt the mastermind behind that emissary to Papa to cooperate with them to siphon some money out through the Workers Brigade. And for refusing to cooperate, they victimised Papa badly, including withholding his contractual entitlements. One conversation led to another and Mum fumed about how they went to greet him at home and he just entered his car and drove off. Well, his favourite niece was married to a junior brother of Papa. Now, writing this will piss off my cousins but why continue to proect the memories of scoundrels like him and Gbedemah and the current ones like Kufuor, Mahama and Gang who sold us down the river to the FOCs? I am also extremely pissed off and have declared no holy cows in my stable any more.
Let's declare an open field day on them all!

In fact his differences with Nkrumah started even before Nkrumah asked him to leave his Government. So stop these concoctions! If the CIA wants a mole to Overthrow Nkrumah, They'll find someone in Government. Not Gbedemah who had long left! And Whilst its highly probably that Gbedemah himself might have goaded Nkrumah into seceding from the UGCC to form the CPP out of selfish interests in order to gain a front line role in the politics of the emerging new state, (something he would never have had in the largely elitist UGCC), it must be pointed out that without Gbedemah, there would have been no Nkrumah. Sure, that is a lot better, more credible than Harlley-Kotoka-Afrifa, etc., coup plotter history.
You failed to realize this is Part 2 of a multi-part paper. It is clear to us you did not read this, and/or that, or just do not care about details.
This is an account by another party that actually ends in 1964. As such, your comment is invalid.
More important, it appears you do not know the history, itself. You are telling us, "Gbedemah left Ghana in 1961".
Sure, the piece ends later, in 1964. But the account starts around the beginning of the 1950s.
And we've given credit to Gbedemah's contributions to the CPP.
So, moving forward, what are all those things Gbedemah could have done during 1961 - 1964, using your cut-off date.
Did Gbedemah relocate to the Arctic Circle?
To boot, Gbedemah, in addition to Busia, were the 2 politicians to immediately return to Ghana when "Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966", to use your own words. He would go on to compete in the first elections after the overthrow, in 1971-1972.
Nice try, CHICKEN GEORGE!
Know this, CHICKEN GEORGE!
What we want to do is put these incredible details in context, with those commentaries as lead-in, in order to properly highlight some of the major missing elements of Ghanaian political history.
That is our only interest --- so everyone who cares, will know.
Greetings.

There was no election in Ghana in 1971-72 for which Gbedemah contested! Gbedemah contested the the 1969 elections that brought Busia to power. He himself as not allowed to take his seat in Parliament because of his past association with the CPP! When Gbedemah left Ghana, he was mostly domiciled in next door Togo and not the United States!
Your permutation that because Gbedemah and Busia were the first to come to Ghana after the Coup means they effected it is analytically bankrupt! Im sure many Ghanaians arrived in Ghana on 25 February 1966! In any case if you have been exiled from the country you helped found, won't you be itching to come back once your nemesis was overthrown?
All you are writing just doesn't add up! and your historical references are non truths as well!! I think you rather try again!!!

CHICKEN GEORGE,
When you are part of a coup plot that is suddenly successful, or did try overthrow and failed, you will surely want to be the firt to cash in.
But, yes, we missed the date for that election. You are correct.
Gbedemah had the problem after the elections because rascal Busia knew some of his secrets, including some on the NLC, some of which were codified into law, against Gbedemah.
In part, some members of the NLC and others knew Gbedemah had about $37,000.00 in an account he could not justify with his previous salaries.
(Not even Harlley, could help him).
And yes, he went to Togo, not to the Arctic Circle.
Like they say, Togo was/is just a stone-throw from Ghana. No permutations about that.
Furthe, you make it sound as if 1961 was a single time in history.
(1) Gbedemah was in the US in 1961
(2) Gbedemah resigned in 1961
(3) Gbedemah was in Togo in 1961.
And sure, we have more "permutations" coming.

Sure Gbedemah could have explained where he got $37,000 from! Gbedemah single handedly financed the formation of the CPP and ushered it into power! Gbedemah had business interests in Lumber and also owned the Evening News Paper which at the time was the most popular! you yourself pointed out that Gbedemah had one of the largest poultry farms at the time! How then do you go on to claim that his bank account couldn't justify his salaries at the time? The point Im trying to drum to you, is that by ideology, Gbedemah was different from Nkrumah! he did not share Nkrumah's socialist leanings! he was a businessman before politics! and he tried all the time to steer Nkrumah away from that stupid socialist course! when he failed, the kitchen became too hot and he had to flee before he was detained! whilst in exile, its no secret that he shared in Busia's desire to overthrow Nkrumah! He himself made that almost plain in his letter to Nkrumah ("It would not be all work and happiness")!! its not because he was greedy or wanted Nkrumah's position! In fact being an Ewe in the highly tribalistic politics of Ghana, and being a realist himself, he understood, there was no way he would get to lead the country (The Akans just won't let it happen)! He didn't lose his seat in Parliament because of any secrets Busia knew! he lost the seat because of a blanket decree that barred many CPP apparatchiks from public service!!
He veered off from Nkrumah because in politics these things happen all the time! you start together but eventually differences crop up! it happened between Hitler and Ernst Rohm! between Lenin and Stalin, between Boakye Gyan and Rawlings!!
So your assertions appear very unanalytical and I dare say very poor and ungrounded in any historical facts!!

If Gbedema was greedy as your copy and paste post is trying to portray him, l hope to differ. When Nkrumah was in prison, Gbedema was contesting the parliamentary seat of Ayawaso constituency. Realizing that that Nkrumah was not on a constituency seat, he readily made Nkrumah to represent the people of Ayawaso to contest as a parliamentarian. Gbedema went and represented the people of Keta. While Nkrumah was in prison Gbedema could do everything in his power to sabotage Nkrumah. This he didn't do. I don't know why you are trying to make him look like a man who was jealous of Nkrumah. You call yourself a professor and you are not able to reduce your post into you own writing and give your own analysis. Are you a MUMU professor? Hope to google your name to know your academic credentials and the schools you attended. Write like a learned person next time.
