A policeman pulled a car over and told the driver he had won $5,000 dollars in the seatbelt competition. "What are you going to do with the money?" asked the policeman. "Well, I guess I'm going to get a drivers license", he answered. "Oh, don't listen to him," said a woman in the passenger seat, "He's a smart aleck when he's drunk." Then the guy in the backseat said, "I knew we wouldn't get far in a stolen car." At that moment there was a knock from the trunk and a voice said, "Are we over the border yet?"

Jomo, this is a very good piece. When it comes to Police handling of cases and criminal investigations in Ghana, the least said about them the better. In most instances, perhaps, some of the police officers should be arrested and prosecuted for wasting public money and on charges of criminal behaviour.
Most criminal suspects have walked free from court because of police handling of serious robbery, rape and murder cases. Most instances could be attributed to sheer laziness, shocking incompetence of police investigations and bribery.
Some of the police officers/prosecutors/investigators do not even know the laws governing investigations, court appearance and judicial process in Ghana. Many cases have been thrown out entirely or collapsed because of court adjournments, no show in court, lack of evidence/poor evidence gathering and cases not properly investigated. Some police officers simply take back-handers from criminals in exchange for dropping charges.
I hope such training courses would go a long way in addressing some aspects of police handling of criminal cases in Ghana.
