I have always been suspicious of so called Religious Counsellors. I am not a professional counsellor but I took a course in counseling as part of my training in the profession that I practice today. I can well remember that we had a heated debate in class one day as to whether Religious Counsellors can be neutral and guide their clients to take independent decisions concerning their lives! The problem is that by the term Religious Counsellng there is an implicit intention to ultimately coerce a client to take a particular religious view about any situation in life! The question was asked then whether an atheist can receive counselling from a Religious Counsellor?
The recent puerile views of so called Religious Counsellors of whatever denomination made me to recall those arguments we had in class! Their views are purely indoctrinations to their denominational teachings which they present as counselling tips to the public! The writer of the present article must therefore be commended for exposing them as charlatans and not professional counsellors!
Having said that, is there no regulatory body in Ghana with oversight responsibility over professional counsellors in Ghana? They are doing a great harm to their clients and should be checked!
I believe in God. God shows me the alternatives I can choose in life and the consequences of the choice I make, but He leaves me to make a free choice! Therefore for a Christian counsellor to tell me not to marry a poor man or woman for that matter is taking away the choice I should make!
In my own case my wife and I had to go through counselling before we could be wedded in Church. When the Pastor Counsellor wanted to transgress beyond the boundaries of counselling into indoctrination I gently and respectfully told him the choice on the issue was a decision my wife and I alone could take! At first he insisted that was Church teaching but later on backed down to allow us to make the choice and even the choice to be wedded in church in the first place at all! Knowledge is power!
Kudos to the author of this article!

I STRONGLY AGREE WITH YOU THE WRITER MUST BE COMMENDED. That counselor Luthrodt or whatever needs a counseling
himself.
