I believe the comparism between black star players and germany and the rest is dubious. Because apart from salaries there are fringe benefits that players from these countries gets which counts as part of their renumeration. I may be naive but playing for germany or england comes with prospect of having lucrative sponsorship deals with nike, or adidas or mcdonalds, a car company or after shave company. However i agree with the article. Whoever put that arrangement of bonus as it is are the ones to blame not the players. After all how much does black stars make from sponsors, world cups etc? Just because you dont pay teachers and nurses on time mean all others must be treated likewise. That is the difference between our country and advanced ones that when in uk and everywhere they are arguing fair living wage for all in ghana it is we dont pay kwesi so why pay ama

If they win the tournaments they participate, they will attract all that kind of sponsorship you talk about. Teams that win or are likely to win automatically attract sponsors. By your logic and that of the writer the bonuses paid them are supposed to compensate for the lack of certain infrastructure and polices for the development of footballers. It is therefore safe to say that the bonuses puts them at par with those other aforementioned countries. The question is: what is the returns on that investment? When did we last win the African Cup? Have we won the worldcup? Your arguments hold no water. You and Nii Yeboah must come again.

The writer is making it sound like Ghana had not done anything for these players. The exposure got these players the contract they have now in Europe. Samson Lamptey and Emmanuel Armah ‘Senegal’ did not get this kind of exposure there were no Fifa U17s and U20s when they were playing. D.K. Poison was a professional boxer and was getting money for it.
Look at all the Ghanaian players who had made it to the top of Europe are the ones who played in U17 and U20. A player in Germany, UK and even US does not need this exposure they will be found.

Oh Dave. Am so sad about your description of Moses Armah Parker. This is a man who has worked very hard to get to where he is now. Formed a team (Medeama FC) single handedly and has been paying and developing players on his own. It was his hard work and sacrifice that got him to the FA position, where he got that slap. Calling him a greedy freeloader is very unfortunate.

Your post looks very good on the surface. However you forget to let us know what happened to players like Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Prince Polley etc. Who are not paupers. Your statement that the clubs pay the players on behalf of the nation is very sad. People don't play for the national team for their income. It is the clubs that salaries to players. You talked about the risk to players who play for the national teams. You forgot to mention the huge benefits and opportunities that open up to players who play for the national teams. Take Dede Ayew for instance. His club Marseille loaned him out and were on the verge of selling hm off, until he proved himself at the under20 world cup. Before anyone can get the permit to play in a league like the EPL, you need to have played a certain number of matches for your national team. Even un Africa, Ghana pays one of the highest bonuses,if not the highest.
I am glad you mentioned what the German FA is doing for talent development. In Ghana it is the ministry that pays bonuses, not the FA. So the FA should have all the resources to develop talents. What have they been doing all this while? If even we assume that the ministry is to develop talents, how can they do it when they pay such huge winning bonuses?
Come Again Sir.

The words of another unpatriotic Ghanaian but I'm not mad at you because even the president, parliamentarians, judges, etc, are corrupt, reckless and unpatriotic.
Ghana, an under-developed nation, is not as rich as those countries cited so the handicapped nation is limited by budgetary constraints in making the resources available for the training of the budding stars. Besides, we are not a people who plan ahead so we keep on dealing with one crisis after another. It's said that if you fail to plan you have already planned to fail.
That said, our players are not patriotic enough. All Ghanaians are suffering from the incompetence and massive corruption of government officials beside the unwise use of limited financial resources. Why should we then pay them huge sums of money for representing the nation when some of them earn several thousands every week. If we need to pay bonuses as incentives then I suggest the government provide scholarship programs for these talented stars through high school and provide for their basic and essential needs. That's good enough for a sprint into the future but I hope others will provide additional suggestions.

This writer is really a fool. He contradicts himself unconsciously. He says there is a problem at the player development level. So why is he advocating bonuses for the players who have escaped the problem and don't really need the money. When all the money is going into paying bonuses how could there be any left for players development? The example about Germany he gave is what we should be doing, which is spend much more on development and little on winning bonuses.
