Any marriage, in monogamy or polygamy, has its share of problems resulting from jealousy. Also Cain killed Abel and Esau was cheated by Jacob in monogamy.
The Monogamous marriage system alone does not take into consideration the real needs of human society. It limits possibilities for both men and women while claiming to protect the latter.
The Bible has a complete marriage system which takes into account all the human variables and provides men and women with viable options. There are people who do not, or will not after maturing in faith, find the practice of polygamy to be painful and confusing. Polygamy is a higher law that when lived refines Christians to become more like what God is.
Our modern Western societies are heavily polygamous, but this is done through promiscuity, divorce and remarriage. Polygamy would force men to fidelity and would provide females with the socio-economic protection they need.
Christians will not be fit for maturity unless they have the opportunity to be true to themselves and overcome the jealousies and insecurities that are a natural part of their flawed natures.
Maasai tribe: The meaning of love and polygamy If marriage is not about love but about successfully running a household, then polygamy could take on a totally different feel. In the Bible, it kind of feels like marriage is about both love and practicality, or sometimes one and sometimes the other.
Marriage is about successfully running a household which is the conducive environment for raising children. It is not about the married couple ‘living happily’ as the world puts it.
‘God is seeking godly offspring’ that is why He says ‘I hate divorce’ (Malachi 2:15,16).
So Sarah and Hagar did really poorly as co-wives. This post retells the full story and suggests based on a rabbinic source that Sarah acted inappropriately. Here maybe the message is not to marry your wife and her servant.
Genesis 16:9,10 – Then the angel of the Lord told her (Hagar), “Go back to your mistress and submit to her. . . I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count.”
This is the message. Hagar reacted inappropriately by despising Sarah.
