KATE,
We absolutely do not have a dog in this fight!
So, you make a good point, also!
True: "...we...enjoy a good beat and dance to a good beat whether we understand the words or not..."
Nevertheless, we need to agree that in all societies, African societies included, the "...yardstick for measuring one’s prowess and talent in music...", can't have just one "beat" or "measure".
It must have a range of measures for the "artistry" to matter to many, to matter to more than one person.
It is for that reason that Gyedu Blay Ambolley who was recently in the US, is a great artist! In fact, his SIMIGWA album cover itself is regarded by many as one of the top 100 iconic album covers, ever. (That is part of the artistry, if we may).
It is also for that reason that Mutabaruka who was recently in Ghana, is a great artist!
So, it is important for us to see that in many respects, and in the vast number of societies, music and poetry are sistren-an'-brethren.
Further, music-and-artistry themselves evolve.
It is in that context we greatly appreciate your phrase: "...the best in our times..."
Greetings!

To be frank, I have never heard anyone or any ghana rapper called Manifest until Sark dropped Kanta. I then googled and found Manifest as a Ghanaian rapper and son of Tsatsu.
Sark should use this as a lesson not to reply any up and coming rapper who try to diss him because they just want to use him and his reputation to launch their own brand.
Ghanaians should also stop fuelling the fight between the two because I know perfectly well that, Manifest did his godMC not to disrespect Sark but to play fast one on him to get recognition for himself which sark has fell for, and know everyone know Manifest.

But, Mr. Isaac Kyei Andoh makes many good points with is very well articulated essay for the "average" soul on the street!
In that respect, we also found a few outrageous statements that stray from the "bitter truth."
For instance, it can't be truth to declare in 2016 that "...Sark can’t get any bigger in Ghana than he already is...".
That, we must say, sounds a lot like a talk by a publicist on the microphone, a Don-King talk, a Don(ald) Trump perpetual boast; than a talk by a management analyst at a mathematics convention or Board meeting proving their point with rationality, theorems, and data.
Our sense is, the reverse is most likely the "truth".
But, you must agree, our Mr. Kyei Andoh has our permission: he warned us, "my bias will be exposed."
Ha!

Dear Andoh,
What you say is "error" in some of the Anglicized construct in certain music sheets is technically not an error.
For instance, some musical or lyrical lines like "do" demonstrates choral fluidity than "does."
This is all done for choral simplicity and fluidity as rhyming plays a major part in that choral fluidity.
Even certain English words are consciously mis-pelt just so choral fluidity is maintained.
Other times, too, some musicians create new noun forms of popular verbs to ensure choral fluidity is not compromised.
The word SUFFERATION as used in many reggae songs is just one popular example. Bob Marley did this all the time. So was Culture....
What is more, an English man like Eric Clapton, one of the world's most recognizes guitar virtuosi, will "incorrectly" use "lie" and "lay" depending on how the verb flows with the instrumentation and other voices on the a track.
Many English songwriters and singers are "guilty" of these grammatical crimes. But there are always technical reasons to explain them away. I believe these technicalities are beyond your simplistic approach to complex questions of musicology.
Justine Timberland used "bleeded" rather than "bled" in one of his songs ("What Goes Around") but a second look at the line where "bleeded" appears shows this word, "cheated."
Thus "cheated" rhymes better with "bleeded" than with "bled."
A popular musician like Gwen Stefani uses "BESTEST."
Take this example which a book I read in the middle of the year 2000 used to explain subject-verb disagreements:
"Everything SHE DO just turns me on."
Why did the Englishman, lead singer for Sting, use DO instead of DOES? Well, listen to the song "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic."
In the final analysis, you will have to understand the sociology of knowledge, culture, and music/cultural criticism in order to understand why certain music sheets are written the way they are.
For instance, you can never understand American blues, rap and hip-hop, neo soul, r&b...if you don't understand EBONICS and the culture and history that gave birth to EBONICS. You also need to understand the grammatical rules governing EBONICS.
As a matter of EBONICS have entered mainstream of white music because some of the writers and producers for some of these white pop musicians are African Americans.
I can say this of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Iggy Azalea, Katy Perry...
There so much technical stuff your article dies not cover. But I also chose to avoid the technical questions in my two-part essay on the Sarkodie-M.anifest. I chose this approach because I did not want to bore readers.
But clearly your mentioning of those American rappers in your articles clearly tells me you are not adequately informed about the entire landscape of American rap and hip-hop. Doing so requires writing books...no series of articles can exhaust these questions....
Let me leave it right here...Thanks for your interesting article though. It really was a pleasure reading it. I hope you take a look at my Part 2.

Both artists were at the pinnacles of their careers. We don't want that happen to Sarkodie & M,nicest, God forbid.

It's clear you don't really understand music as you claim to or you're being bias in your analysis.
How can you say Nas isn't deep???
