People gloss over the reality of this part of our history.
The UP was a marriage of convenience undertaken for a specific purpose - the united opposition to CPP and Nkrumah. The constituent members of the UP were not ideological bedfellows.
With the return to civilian rule after the overthrow of Nkrumah, the raison d'être of the UP ceased to exist and with it, the party. The disparate elements of the "united" party went their separate ways. It was only the former NLM phalanx of the party (admittedly the biggest chunk made up mostly of Twi speakers) that went on to form the PP, then PFP/UNC and then NPP. The others didn't follow and only a fraction of the northern elements went along and were marginalised. Today's NPP is really not the descendant of the UP - it is the descendant of the Ashanti-Akyem part of the UP. Why are the Ewe descendants of the Togoland Congress, the Ga descendants of Ga Shifo Mo Kpe, and others like them, not, today, members of NPP?
The NPP's link with the UP is tenuous whereas their link with the NLM "matemeho" is concrete!

The hero-worshiping was just too much in the ndc but President Atta-Mills brought sanity into the party and President John Dramani Mahama is doing same. A stronger party is stronger than a stronger individual.

You came to your article or posting, Mr. Charles McCarthy, with your biases and shallowness in tow and it shows. By 1979 the people of Ghana had seen and lived under Dr. Busia of the UP/UGCC Dombo political party, their ideas and ideals of governance and rejected it all. So if by 1979 Dr. Hilla Limann won the presidency it was not because of a rigged election and or ignorance of voters but because your favorite political party then and now, the UP/UGCC Dombo masquerading as NPP could not deliver on the delusional democracy they sold Ghanaians.
The issue in Ghana comes down to this Mr. McCarthy; we have people the likes of you who do not and never will understand democracy but by hook or crook, you want to bring to Ghana. Go and read the American history and or the UK history books and you will find out the struggles prior to attaining the system of government you desire. America of yesteryear and today broke from the British and improved on a rather archaic UK system. Since the formation of what is now the USA every nation that has tried democracy has failed; they become riddled with bribery and corruption from Brazil through India to Afghanistan and Iraq even under the tutelage of the USA and UK.
You can hate the CPP all you want and can give all the reasons you want to explain away our failure in Ghana but none will be true. Ghana is floundering because the classroom educated but ignorant people do not learn facts from fiction. If the USA, UK and Western nations have failed to democratize Iraq and Afghanistan with all the money that should tell you clowns that your dreams are but dreams. Look to what works for a nation full of people with tribal and political party loyalties rather than a loyalty and love of or for country; a strong man that will “knock heads” if need be to hold the nation together and forge development. Iraq, Libya, Congo and many more others have failed because the world made it acceptable for people to destroy those nations for tribal illusions and Ghana is no different.
