I do not know how or when it started but Africans are not and have never been lazy; we are influenced by culture just like every other race. The question I ask of people who believe Africans are lazy is why would hard working Caucasians brave the oceans to go after a lazy bunch in Africa to do all the developments known in developed nations or for that matter why would they go to the extreme to look for run away slaves?
Our problems start with lack of self confidence and indpendent thinking which is culturally induced or inflicted. What is the measure of success in Africa or with Africans? For example there are rich and successful college drop-outs in the USA, Canada and across the globe from the ignorant State of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker though many rich Hollywood bunch to a much wiser Bill Gates with more humanity in his pinky than all of Ghana's PhD folks combined. We come to the table in Africa believing that having a PhD is all that matters. But ignorance is not reserved for the uneducated but worn as badge of honor by most of our educated bunch. So while a few non PhD holders in some other nations can combine their talents to improve the world like what Microsoft or Facebook has done, we sit in Africa with meaningless collection of PhD's and collect from government and the national coffers that which we do not deserve and on productivity that is less than field workers. That is not laziness but a reward system that allows for peple to claim they have book smarts but sit in offices away from the sun and yet expect the uneducated laborer to perform tasks that should be done or supervised and tested by presumed educated professionals. Africans and negroes have never been lazy; we could not. We succumbed to a measure of development and reward systems devoid of humanity and not of our making and we find ourselves in a competition we cannot win; but laziness I don't think so.

Before Europeans arrived at our door steps, who was looking after us? Were Africans not self sufficient? The thing is that Europeans created the industrial revolution, and so they have the head start. They have accumulated so much wealth and knowledge that they'll always have the advantage. To make matters worse for African countries, there are few stable nations.Ghana spent the first 50yrs post independence going from coup to coup.
