WELL, WHEN U HAVE BEEN LIED TO THAT AFRICANS AND ANIMALS LIVE SIDE BY SIDE AND THAT AFRICANS LIVE ON TREES LIKE MONKEYS. AND U COME TO AFRICA AND SEE CIVILIZATION. IT MAKES U INVICIBLE. U FEEL LIKE THE ATLAS MAN. I NEVER SAW A BLACK PILOT IN MY LIFE UNTIL I WENT TO GH. SO IM NOT SURPRISED ALI WOULD EAT A RAW BANANA. In Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Capital, Ali tried mightily to pull up the legendary Okomfo Anokye sword. The sword was planted in the ground two centuries ago by an Ashanti sorcerer who said the nation he has founded would endure as long as the sword remained in place .
Visitors are usually invited to test their strength against the sword, for the Ashanti are certain nobody-- not even the great Muhammad Ali -- can break its moorings . Ali tried for five minutes and couldn’t bridge it.

Ali spent two weeks in Ghana in May 1964. It was his longest stay in any African country. He even cut out some of the intended visits to other African countries as we read in Raphael Cormack's interesting London Review of Books article on Ali's meeting with Nkrumah posted on ghanaweb on May 13.
I, too, was in the elementary school when he visited Ghana. I am not sure if he visited Kpandu too but I remember one of my teachers in secondary school saying he saw him in Kpandu.
We all in Ghana just loved this guy and doted on everything he said. His visit to Ghana made all of us sooooo proud. Too bad they ate bananas with the skin on. They should have known better. Perhaps the whites in the USA laughing at blacks as people in trees eating bananas and coconuts may have gotten into their heads.
As for Ali's promise to the people of Amedzofe, you can be sure of his making similar promises to the people of all the places he visited. The guy was just good at saying the right things at the right times to oppressed people.
In this sense, he was like Pelé who is so diplomatic in his utterances. Pelé calls every good player the best player in the world. The guy is so decent and lovable you wonder if he ever crushed a fly. That's the one difference between him and Maradona, another of the greatest in the world...
And to us in Ghana, Pelé is very much like Muhamed Ali - a black legend who visited our country at a time Ghana was the most famous country in Africa. Pelé is just a year older than Ali and we wish him far more longer years than Ali. Pelé's death will also be one that is mourned a lot in Africa, especially in Ghana!

Excellent piece of work. Well researched. This type of work cannot be seen among writers now. We miss the past. Skewed journalism is the one that wins the award now. Oh Ghana. Give us more please
