Two Jamaican farmers stumbled into a fruit tree deep in the Jamaican forest. The fuit looked like an orange, but strange. The two farmers plugged a few fruits, brought them back to Kingston, and the that was the news of the day. The fruit had never been seen before.
The Jamaican government established a contest to name the fruit. A Ghanaians resident in Kingston approached the two farmers and suggested that Jamaica could name the fruit after the son of his classmate in Ghana. The Jamaiacans were delighted to hear this, for they thought it would be nice to strengthen the Jamaican African connection. A photo of the Ghanaian, Akufo-Addo, soon arrived in Kingston and was shown to the two farmers.
Both farmers, upon seeing the photo of Akufo-Addo, exclaimed in unison in their Jamaican accent, "Ugli". A light came to the farmers, and they agreed that the fruit should be called "Ugli". And thus was born the name of the new fruit, Ugli.
