"The fight against poverty, ignorance and disunity is a shared responsibility among the government, the private sector, civil society and non-governmental organizations. [The reason is that the government alone does not have the requisite human and capital resources to sustain this struggle]."
The preamble of your article omits a very crucial role of government, and in a way absolves same from its core responsibility. However, I personally applaud you for highlighting the magnificent role of TUDEC in helping with poverty, ignorance and disunity in the country.
To quote the famous Frederick Douglass: "Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe."
Our governments past and present know this to be true. Fighting poverty, ignorance and disunity in the country is a Public good, it is like the air we breathe and water we drink. No government in its right mind would source control of pollution (clean air) to the private sector or non-governmental organizations. So also can no government source clean water to the private sector. These are Public good, and must be provided by government.
Poverty and ignorance are both Public good, that is why in 1966 soon after the overthrow of Dr. Nkrumah, the NLC regime set up 'mass education' to fight ignorance in society. They had the resources to do it 50 years ago, and the government today should have the requisite resources to do it now and invite organizations such as TUDEC to support its efforts.
I remember during NLC mass education period, both my grannies would show off their books and the things they learned in class. They learned civic - the responsibility of a citizen; they learned history - names of our great warriors and the battle they fought; and some everyday math. This is how a government alleviates poverty and ignorance in society. Those in government can find the resources if they want to do it.
