Ghanaian society is not the worst - but still, lots of improvements in the opportunities for women to thrive as human beings and as citizens remain unfulfilled, out of bounds to millions of Ghanaian girls and women.
---Equal opportunity to education
---Assistance by males, chores in the home
---Banning of cultural practices that disrespect woman, endanger their lives, and deprive them of their rights as equal citizens
---Moderation of religiosity, balanced by Critical-Thinking and knowledge in Science
---Etc.
BOTTOM-LINE: Men have a responsibility to help resolve every one of these issues and opportunities.

Our sense is, much of the diagnosis by that preacher last week was almost heretical.
Lack of money, lack of education, and poor living conditions are a major contributor to the misery visited on older women most of whom are widows who have outlived their sons.
Then there are the Child Marriages...
Peace!

First of all, let me say this about this young lady. She has a very strong physical presence carved in confidence and rectitude. I have always admired her from a distant.
The plight of any oppressed group follows the same narrative - self deprecating and critical of oneself. Women as oppressed group are no different, they are exhibiting what comes naturally to many oppressed groups. In the Americas, it is blacks against blacks; in the India subcontinent, it is Indian women against Indian women; and in Islamic countries, it is Islamic women against Islamic women - those who have conservative views and accept the status quo, and those who share neo-liberal disposition on social issues and want change like yourself.
Women's Liberation Movement (feminism) was the front that brought together middle and upper-class white American women to fight the establishment with one voice. It was no longer women against women, rather it was women against the establishment. There are still issues in the Ghanaian society that will preoccupy Ghanaian women and keep them from attacking each other. Issues like domestic violence, sexual harassment, and sexual violence.
There is always a Martin Luther King Jr. who comes along once in a life time to summon an oppressed group into action, and maybe this is your calling. With so much star power, you can start speaking to female university students in the three main universities and start a movement if you are passionate about this.
Well done!!!

Looking at the problem from a simplistic viewpoint, I'd say it's all a question of numbers; in most countries, more females than males are born annually. Apparently, in some countries, there are ten females to one male. Imagine the competition and the underhanded behavior that such a situation probably generates in those victimized by the practice of poligamy!
So let's face it,as a mother you want your daughter married, and as a young unmarried woman whose biological clock is ticking away, and the neighbors are constantly passing remarks that rob you of your self-worth, the competition becomes that much greater. That's where and when certain ugly characteristics of our personalities most are exposed. Let nature change the numbers in gender births and male to male behavior would change with them.In other words, nature always tries to solve its own problems one way or the other.

I doubt if you believe a woman's self worth is tied to whether she is married or not. In civilized societies, it is not marriage that defines a woman, rather it is her accomplishments - education, upward mobility on the corporate ladder and in society. Marriage is the last thing on the minds of women in civilized cultures, but then, Ghana is not one of them.
As recent as 1960 in the US, the life of the American white woman was to follow one path; to marry in her early 20, start a family quickly, and devote her life to homemaking. The American woman legally subject to their husbands via "head and master laws." They had no legal right to any of their husband's earnings or property, aside from a limited to "proper support".
You should change your attitude from looking at a woman as a sex object - this in essence is what Ms. Forson wrote about. Uncivilized cultures still have a parochial view of the woman, and are limited in their backward in their minds that a woman has equal rights as man and has the same capacity as man in every aspect of life.
Today in the US and Canada there are about 40 women CEO of Fortune 500 companies, not to mention women head of states and governments. Thanks to the feminine movement in the west.

Welll-written. Kudos. I however wish to add that not every woman identifies with the victim mindset of inequality - those women's choice, no matter how 'crazy' some of you find it must also be respected without a whiff of mockery. Let those who feel disempowered fight on.
Allow those who celebrate their complementary cultural roles who do not see themselves as victims be left to their happiness.
The "I am right - they are wrong" approach could be signs of a psychosocial disorder.
