Some of us would have preferred you to state clearly your own position on the issue. From the start you argue against the West's imposition of its values on us Africans when they tie aid money to gay rights issues. I agree the west should not impose on us on anything. The West also feel they have a strong point here: if they give us aid then they have the right (yes!) to insist that we observe certain values that they also hold dear. If we don't want them to impose those values on us, then we should reject the aid they give us. The moral imperative is on both sides.
The argument that the West does not accept polygamy which (is acceptable in Africa) is not a strong or even a valid one. There's an assymetric relationship between the West and Africa. We do not give any aid money to the West and cannot tie their acceptance of our African values to it.
The issue of Western double standards is also a dicey one - not putting pressure on Saudi Arabia the way they do on us on these issues. Actually, the west also calls on these Muslim countries to also change their laws on homosexuality. But Saudi Arabia does not receive aid money from the west and so that leverage is not there. And the west needs Middle East oil more than it needs Africa's resources. Yes, there's a double standard but it is understandable even if not acceptable. We cannot expect the West not to act in its self-interest.
But the greater issue is what we Africans are doing about homosexual rights even without the West's interference or impositions. And this is where I don't find any clear-cut answers from you, francis. What is really your position?
If we cast the LBGT issue as one of human rights and discrimination, then we cannot bring in issues of western imposition, values, cultural practices, etc. to cloud the issue. IT IS SIMPLY WRONG TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST PEOPLE WHO PREFER A SEXUAL ORIENTATION THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THAT PREFERRED BY THE MAJORITY OF THE SOCIETY. Of course, the conditions that criminalize harmful sexual practices within the heterosexual community (rape, paedophilia, incest, etc) shall also apply to the homosexual community but the act of homosexuality itself cannot be criminalized! This is a matter of discrimination not one of cultural values. That is why the African argument that "it is not part of our culture" is not only wrong, it is even irrelevant.
As for Mahama's book and Solomon's help, I don't really get what you're driving at. Is it that Mahama is finding it difficult to take a strong stand against homophobia as a quid pro quo to his American friend because he is the leader of a homophobic nation full of sexual bigots?
I think you should give us more clear-cut answers to the questions you raise yourself in the article.

Homosexuality, just as religiosity, has been part of the Ghanaian 'cultural practices' since time immemorial. The major difference is that, while the later is an open practice performed at events on daily basis, the later is a practice that is shrouded in secrecy, all because of persecution. What those Mr. Moralities ( Fo Amoaning and his group) should know is that, the practice is a choice, just as some northern and Trokosis have disgustingly chosen to eat cat and dogs to quench their insatiable appitites.
As a kid, I witnessed some neigboring friends of mine fucking a fowl on one quiet afternoon when returned home from school and our parents were out to work on their farms. I confronted these kids and the youngest one among the 3 who seems not to like the act told me he saw the 2 older kids fucking each other anus in turns.
And this happened at a time when we did not even know much about the whiteman.
The problem with we Ghanaians, unlike the whites in the west, is that we are too intolerant, has lost direction and are deliberately and hypocritically trying to blame others for a practice which our mothers and forefathers have condoned for years. On one of my eave drops as a kid, I head of greatgrand uncles telling his peers that young ladies of those days did not know how to treat themselves, and that when you make a mistake and have sex with them through their backside, shot is what you gonna see after the act. This, I have grown up to realize that knowing people from the back is a common practice among us so what is the noise making.
What we need to do as a people is to accept and accommodate those who have chosen to go on that tangent in so far as they don't break any laws on the land. Islam ( as well as christianity) was not part of culture but now some people have accepted it and are foolishly killing human beings indiscriminately for some stupid reasons best know to them. Yet the same people who are making homosexuality a big deal recognize these buffoons. Our president, out of silly compassion, is even accepting these people who can shoot without caring about their targets unto our midst. An to the Christians, where in the 10 commandments, which is suppose to the guiding principles for devine selection onto heaven, is it written that homosexuality is abominble. Allow people to enjoy life if that is what pleases them. Asantes eat totobi, koobi and momoni, Trokosis eat cat, Mahama and his people eat dog, the Chinese eat snakes and that is the dynamics of nature. Those tuonzafi lovers in Ghana knows that animal intestines, of which the anus is part is a delicacy that come with the kubewa/ayoyo soup. GIVE ME A BREAK. I will always side with the whiteman because they are more principle, organized and more intelligent than their black counterparts. Homosexuality should not be seen as a crime. Period.

Thanks for telling us about your childhood indiscretions by disguising it as someone else"s. And in your adult life, the pleasure in "buggering" your wife also disguised in a clever way. Now, I do not think you will advocate "cannibalism" as a matter of choice for Ashanti Kings. This dreadful and unpalatable act happennned in Manhyia Palace and it is well documented by T E Bowdich, during his trip to Kumasi in the 1800s. What has offal eating got to do with homosexuality? Republic of Ireland sought the opinion of the populace through a referendum on the issue of homosexuality. Lastly, the people of Gold Coast came in contact with the Whiteman as far back as 1471 long before Columbus set out to the Americas. Infact, Elimina Castle which was built in 1482 is older than any permanent structure built by Europeans anywhere in the Americas from Canada to Argentina. Christianity existed in some parts of Africa long before it was introduced in Europe. Augustine of Hippo, is a testament of that. The English Sodomy Act came into force in 1523 irrespective of the fact that it was not in the Ten Commandments.

Without a doubt homosexuality in Africa is a controversial subject that raises the blood pressure of many people and prevents critical thinking.
Francis, of all the people you cited, the one whose quote I endorse is the one by Pope Francis, "If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge... It is not right to interfere spiritually in the life of a person...We must always consider the person...God accompanies persons, and we must accompany them, starting with their situation. It is necessary to accompany them with mercy..." Can Ghanaians be merciful as the Pope pontificate?
Many of our countrymen, from Kwaku Baako to Foh-Amoaning are fiercely homophobic.
And if this anti-gay is going to cost our nation to lose foreign aid and bilateral relations with the west, then we need to hear from all the flagbearers of the parties vying for office in the forthcoming general.
Here is my take on this controversial topic:
We are making homosexuality too important a topic. Sexual orientation should not be publicized, whatever two adults decide to do in their bedroom is their business.
Sustainably, we in Africa should welcome homosexuality. By 2100 Africa's population could be 3 billion to 6 billion, up sharply from 1.2 billion today. This unexpected rise will significantly stress already fragile resources in Africa and around the world.
As Rabbi Harold Kushner reminds us "everything that created is potentially holy".
In other words, God's fingerprints is on everything - including homosexuality & heterosexuality.

MARCUS, given how homophobic our country is, no flag-bearer is going to stand up for the basic human rights of LGBT people. Any flag-bearer who does will lose the national vote especially a close one. They will readily sacrifice gay rights to remain in, or gain power. I don't think we will want to hear from them.
Secondly, the topic has come be a very hot one. It has become important and there is no going away from that. It is better we face it squarely.
Your sustainability argument is a nice joke - humourous. Unfortunately, we can't rely on it to stem our population growth. There will always be an abundance of heterosexuals to continue the population explosion. Moreover, gay people are very interested in having their own children too, and being parents. They just don't want to do it the heterosexual way.

There's no way we can sustainably support Africa's economic & social development with such ballooning population.
Seriously, who is going to pay for the additional hospitals, schools & infrastructural developments that growing population calls for?
However controversial the topic is, those with insights must join the conversation. In my opinion, it is irresponsible to be mute on such a timely issue.

In nature there are many things that are logic and natural, doing he opposite have dare consequences for the individual, society and the whole world.
In nature imagine some male plants that pollunate female plants decided that democracy means that they should not pollinate female plants, but male plants there will be hunger in the world.
Thus imagine if we are to give that same sex pollination to all plants, animal and birds which want to do the same sex thing on the insane side we shall have a lot of food to eat because there will not be cereals, roots, meat and nuts for us to eat.
When there is nothing for us to eat, cloth and protect ourselves from the elements of nature I am of the view that we shall call for the culling of man himself, which will by then be in a the era of no birth because men are marrying men and women are marrying women, and as a result there is no population increase.
I can not imagine when he homosexual animal or plant both male and female produce only male sperm, thus there are no eggs to fertilize.
Whenever a mammal is born it looks for its mother's breast with its mouth. Birds which my nature do not have breast and therefore milk look for what by nature they eat on the ground or are feed the same by their parents, with what they eat biologically and has been registered and fixed by instinct.
We wrote that man does not do things in accordance with his biological definiteness. But since man is a biological animal it feed itself through the mouth and not the nose, just like all animals do. It has a digestive system just like any other animal and pass whatever is digested though the anus. Both male and female animals have their sex organ and urinal organ coming into the same opening. In spite of that sexual intercourse is through the sex organ and not the urinal. Animals do not pass food through their nose, even birds that dive to catch their food deep in water.
Homosexuality is anti-natural and has not logical explanation, because whenever doctors want to give us energy without us eating food, they do not pass food through our veins but liquids that will not block our veins and other organs.
Thus if homosexuality is not only two men admiring each other, but to have sex through their anus, then, it is not only absurd, but murder.
