Nkrumah was right when he declared, "the independence of Ghana is meaningless, unless it is linked with the total liberation of Africa". But was his policy of uniting the continent into United States of Africa feasible and coherent? Was this policy attainable or a distant dream of a leader who lacked discernment?
Dr. Nkrumah has been accused of many things by his detractors, but what he truly lacked in all seriousness is his ability to see and understand people, things, or situations clearly and intelligently - i.e., discernment. Dr. Nkrumah totally misread the African personality - a very serious thing for a leader to do. The history of the African is nothing to write home about. The African is genetically crafted to be selfish, and can never act for the common good of the people. It is also true that the African is not disciplined and lacks the conviction of purpose.
Anyone who has taken a critical look of the African will undoubtedly reach the following conclusions: the African is selfish; the African lacks discipline; the African lacks the conviction of purpose. Truly, if Nkrumah was smart enough to discern these true characteristics of the African, I am sure he would not have wasted Ghana's resources to promote this elusive and promiscuous proposition of United States of Africa.
I love Nkrumah, he is my idol; he is a consummate nationalist and of selfless disposition. But his Pan-African predisposition blinded his nationalistic purview and shaped his politics. Whilst Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore, and Tunku Abdul Rahman of Malaysia spent their countries' precious resources to improve the quality of life for their people in the 60s, Dr. Nkrumah was spending our resources lavishly on these ungrateful and spurious Africans who deviously accepted the assistance but later turned their backs to him.
Had Nkrumah been a sensible leader just like Lee Kwan Yew or Tunku Abdul Rahman, and spent our resources wisely, Ghana's income per capita would have rivaled that of these two contemporaries. Ghana was miles ahead of Singapore and Malaysia at independence, and if Singapore was able to transform a marshy land without natural resources into industrial giant, why couldn't Ghana endowed with bountiful natural resources do better.
African Unity is a lost cause - the African cannot be trusted; it is an elusive proposition and not worth wasting our resources on. A cursory look at ECOWAS tells the African story, and it is not a story to write home about.

The only thing Independence has given Africa is that , instead of our colonizers stealing from us, we get to steal for ourselves and end up more broke than we started
