Dear Mr. Owusu, it is not clear to me whether all that you have written are true or just fiction. Note that both happened in the Ashanti Region. I can confirm to you that this situation is very common in the Ashanti Region. I am not saying this to insult Ashantis but I personally know of more than four of such cases from Kumasi alone. I wonder what is going on with our Ghanaian women especially those from the Ashanti Region. I will suggest you follow the legal way. Meanwhile if it is really your wife then whatever you are putting here will most like be seen by her. Get a lawyer.

There is something in your observation that both stories happened in the Ashanti Region. It is not an insult but there is something cultural to it. All Ghanaians like money and riches but there is something different to it when it comes to the way Asantes relate to money and wealth.
Such cultural differences among our various tribes have changed much these days with more uniformity, but certain practices (and beliefs) die hard...
Justice must prevail and I wish Owusu can use the courts to get his properties back. But he must be willing to bribe the judges...

But the case here is different. It has to do with marrying a woman in Ghana who succeeds in swindling you of your property in Ghana and then saying she doesn't want you any more. This woman is only after your property in Ghana, not after you bringing her to Europe. It's pure greed and greed and the love of money.

Let's stop pretending there are no horror stories in the Diaspora. Why did it cost 12,000 pounds? Because there's money to be made and we live in a cut throat culture. And I challenge these men to come clean and not pretend they stay faithful to those wives. If not then neither party is obligated to holding their end of the marital contract. And we also know that ownership starts with title of property. Would a man who left a wife to build a single house but come back home to visit interested in some other woman split the house with the soon to be ex wife? Would the man let her have the house or compensate her for the years in wait or construction supervision? So we like it when women are losers but show disdain when they win; how interesting.

Abeeku Meansah, whilst I agree with you that it is unrealistic for Ghanaian men to expect their wives back home not only to wait for them but also to remain faithful whilst they have ex-marital affairs wherever they are, the two stories recounted in this article do no make sense to me.
In fact, the first is tantamount to a Ghanaian movie story. The visit to the ex-wife's family and the accidental death, arrest, incarceration, etc. I just do not believe this story.
If on the other hand, if the story is true, then the man could easily prove beyond any reasonable doubt that he funded the projects and be able to claim, at least, part of it. I say so because the money for the projects did not walk from UK to Ghana and therefore there should be evidence of the transfer from him to the ex-wife. Even if he did not use official money transfer, he might have used individuals who carried the money from UK to Ghana. They are the evidence. Moreover, the money might have come from his bank account and therefore his bank statements will contain evidence of the withdrawals. These could be used to support his position that he sent money to the ex. Though these may not necessarily prove that the withdrawals were sent to the ex, such statements are reasonable evidence to support his claim, which could be collaborated by those who sent the money to Ghana to the ex.
Finally, if the transfers were through official money transfers, even if the man did not keep all his receipts, the transfer agents in the UK and Ghana could provide evidence for him.
However, if the woman disputes that the man financed the projects, then she must prove evidence of her sources of income that enabled her to finance the projects. The mere fact that the deeds are in her name are not sufficient for her to claim ownership of the properties. Any good Attorney will be able to recover the properties for the rightful owner, except that the story cannot be true.
As for the second story or personal experience of the author. it's only an indication of carelessness on the part of the man. It also shows that he could not manage his wife as well as his business affairs in Ghana. When reports reached him that his wife's behaviour was damaging his business, he should have asked the wife not to have any dealings with the business. Period. That is why businesses fail in Ghana. They leave the business in the hands of family members who have no idea how to manage a business.
The two stories also say a lot about the men involved. I am sorry to say but they behaved like damn fools or educated fools. I hope the two stories are not real life situations. I do not believe them.

My dear friend Nii. This don't just happen to Ashanti,s only my wife was married by my mother for me as a man from the north its normal. We had a son and I was able to buy a house in London. To make this short I travelled to Ghana for just 4 weeks on my return my exwife changed the door locks. On the day I arrived which she knew as I telephone her of my arrival she took the day off work waited for me when I got home and could not get in because she changed the locks and me not knowing she was not home tried to get in by breaking a side glass to gain entry it was after that she call the British police when they came she made an alleged statement that I said I would kill her the police then got me out of the house and I was told to visit the police station after 2 weeks by then what ever her reasons are she would have soften up. When I got to the police station after the 2 weeks my exwife had made an application for divorce already seeking the house and a court order preventing me from coming any where near the house. I had a divorce ok but made sure she never got the house I have not married yet but I have bought a 3 bed room again and she is not renting a bed sit. I had the last laugh.

This spate of women betraying their Husbands and seizing their properties for themselves is not unique to only Ashantis. I think it is a problem among all Akans.
I am currently helping a friend to resolve a similar case involving a certain Kwahu Woman resident in Accra. The woman is claiming the house that ex-husband has sold off as her 'Marital Home', even though the ex-husband acquired the property before marrying the Lady. Their marriage did not last for even a year. The lady also dubiously had the title on the House changed to have her name on it without the man's knowledge.
There is a certain association of women in marriage to property acquisition that seems to hinge on the general Akan Cultural expectation that when a wife incurs a debt it is the husbands responsibility to pay for her financial freedom but when she happens to earn or gain some wealth, she owns it for herself and 'her family'.
'Her family' here, culturally, does not refer to the direct and immediate family that includes her, the husband and their children. 'Her family' refers to the wife's maternal roots wider extended family.
In fact, it used to be a specifically emphasized diction that was explicitly voiced out as part of all marital rites in Akan. The spokesperson from the woman's maternal family in the rites ceremony at some point close to the conclusion of the event would say something like the following to the husband-to-be: "Se wo se wobeware Awuraa yi de a, na wate asie se, se Awuraa no bo ka wo aware no mu a, eye w'asede se wo tua. Na mmom, se Obaa no nya agyapedie de a, ode ko ne fie". Then, in response, the groom would give his unambiguous consent to that diction.
In fact, some of the members of the Woman's family might jovially even add that the "groom accepts being stupid enough to accept that responsibility" of shouldering all that financial burden.
Such a 'suicidal' nuptial contract is closely tied to the Akan's tradition of inheriting into their maternal side of the family, for which we all know how many children and wives had been denied of deserving share of any wealth they had helped the father and husbands accumulate.
This is why I give credit to the former President Rawling's Administration for boldly leading to the way to improve our intestate Laws that we currently have on our books. That Law requires that the properties of the husband dying intestate be divided into 3 parts. One for the wife or wives, one for the children and one for the husbands family, be it recognized as the paternal or maternal side of the husband.
I think, if I am not mistaken, the Law applies equally to a wife dying intestate as well.
We all have to recognize the fact that every child born would naturally have a father. Some guy that could not hold his 'thing' inside his pants caused the pregnancy that resulted in the child's birth. But not all children would have a maternal Uncle whose wealth they would inherit.
Therefore, the Maternal inheritance of the Akans has long been held to the detriment of most children and widows. The current Law referred to above is a good transitional fix until we all migrate back to the original and fairer way of inheritance through the father.
Having said that, however, folks must be circumspect in how the Akans came to inherit matrilineally. Before anyone starts dousing insults on the Akans for choosing that style of inheritance, I would like to emphasize that there was a historically significant event among the Akans that called for such a decision on inheritance among them.
Time would not let me go into that here. But let it suffice for knowing now that that decision was intricately entangled with the sheer survival of the Akan People in those days when it was made.
Someone else who knows the event I am talking about could help the readership to narrate and explain it.
Anyone in a similar case must not take it lightly or leave the case unto others to handle while living abroad. Lawyers in Ghana could collude with the opposing side of the case to throw it in favor of the undeserving. So, watch out for the Lawyer you may hire in Ghana for such cases as well.

G. K. Berko this problem is not an Akan or Asante problem but a Ghanaian phenomenon. Women from all ethnic groups in Ghana are involved due to, often, the stupidity of those involved.
I just cannot understand how a woman who was in a marriage for a year could change the deeds to a property that the man owned before the marriage into her name. How did that come about if someone is not behaving stupidly? Sorry for my bad language but how did the woman lay hands on the deeds if the man had not given it to her? I know that with corruption in Ghana it's easy for the woman to pay bribes to officials to change the deed into her name but if it was done on the blind side of the rightful owner, then that becomes fraud or criminal. The man can go to court and get it annulled. I just do not get it. These men are either fools or naive and that could be why these women take advantage of them. Some of them go to Ghana, show off as wealthy to attract these women who are only interested in wealth acquisition more than marriage. Perhaps, they deserve what they get. I have no sympathy for such fools, if these stories are true.

They are ok with low-paying formal jobs and living in government bungalows. Most of these tribes have weird retrogressive cultural practices that they still hold unto today. An uneducated Ashanti man may may work hard to create jobs to employ an educated Ewe, Northerner or Ga. All these goodwill are shown towards you guys by Ashantis. What else do you want from us? As a Christian take this case to the Lord in prayer. Then take legal action. I know she will sweat if she is asked to prove the source of income by which she acquired the property. May God guide you in this matter.

Your story is that of our own. I mean most of us who have done good deeds to our wives. After six years of marriage I decided to bring my wife to Yankee. She only spend five months in apartment before leaving me for old boyfriend. A fake Pervert Mallam called Abdallah Sabi in the bronx. Now they both spreading false rumor that I am a bad person. It doesn't matter that I took care of her for all these years. I even gave her a copy of my master card while still in Ghana. So my friend, Ghana women are just evil. Marry Oyibo and live in peace.
