The same UP/NPP bunch keep praising Lee Kuan Yew, despite his PDA and 30 year rule. This is Lee Kuan Yew in his own words.
"Between being loved and being feared, I have always believed Machiavelli was right. If nobody is afraid of me, I'm meaningless."
"Anybody who decides to take me on needs to put on knuckle-dusters. If you think you can hurt me more than I can hurt you, try. There is no way you can govern a Chinese society."
"If you are a troublemaker... it's our job to politically destroy you... Everybody knows that in my bag I have a hatchet, and a very sharp one. You take me on, I take my hatchet, we meet in the cul-de-sac."
"You take a poll of any people. What is it they want? The right to write an editorial as you like? They want homes, medicine, jobs, schools."
“I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn’t be here today. And I say without the slightest remorse, that we wouldn’t be here, we would not have made economic progress, if we had not intervened on very personal matters – who your neighbour is, how you live, the noise you make, how you spit, or what language you use. We decide what is right. Never mind what the people think.”
Repression, Sir is a habit that grows. I am told it is like making love-it is always easier the second time! The first time there may be pangs of conscience, a sense of guilt. But once embarked on this course with constant repetition you get more and more brazen in the attack. All you have to do is to dissolve organizations and societies and banish and detain the key political workers in these societies. Then miraculously everything is tranquil on the surface. Then an intimidated press and the government-controlled radio together can regularly sing your praises, and slowly and steadily the people are made to forget the evil things that have already been done, or if these things are referred to again they’re conveniently distorted and distorted with impunity, because there will be no opposition to contradict.”
“What we are preventing is duds getting into Parliament and government. Any person of quality, we welcome him but we don’t want duds. We don’t want Chee Soon Juan, or J.B. Jeyaretnam. They’re not going to build the country.”
“Freedom of the press, freedom of the news media, must be subordinated to the overriding needs of the integrity of Singapore, and to the primacy of purpose of an elected government”,
On political opposition: “If we had considered them serious political figures, we would not have kept them politically alive for so long. We could have bankrupt them earlier.”
On how Singapore cannot afford the luxury of multiparty politics: “If all the 300 (top civil servants and political elite) were to crash in one jumbo jet, then Singapore will
disintegrate”.
If Singapore is a nanny state, then I am proud to have fostered one.
“What are our priorities? First, the welfare, the survival of the people. Then, democratic norms and processes which from time to time we have to suspend.”
I make no apologies that the PAP is the Government and the Government is the PAP.

YAW,
I just wanted to add one or two comments on your take on Lee Kuan Yew. Here it goes courtesy of American legal scholars Benjamin Wittes and Adam Klein:
“Preventive detention is not prohibited by US law or especially frowned upon in tradition or practice. The circumstances in which it arises are not isolated exceptions to a strong rule against it; rather, they are relatively frequent. The federal government and all 50 states possess a wide range of statutory preventive detention regimes that are frequently used, many of which provoke little or legal controversy..."

I don't understand how Nkrumah supporters compare Lee Kuan Yew to their communist dictator. Whilst Yew was embarking on capitalist policies to develop his country with British and USA backing, Nkrumah was tying our destiny to the communist USSR.
Ten more years of Nkrumah would have destroyed Ghana. When he was removed from power in 1966, Ghana was in economic despair compared to Malaysia which was in economic boom due to its close relationship with the West.
Nkrumah was a curse that was removed at the right time.

Dr. Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, one of the fiercest critic of Nkrumah and the CPP era along with most of those who hate the era currently live and make their livelihoods in nations where the safety and security of the people are attained via something called indefinite detention of anyone who is accused of terror, accused of providing aid and comfort to organizations that are declared terror entities, those who communicate by design or by accident with those undesirables and sometimes those who attempt to defend them.
I have not read, seen or heard any of the Nkrumah haters in those nations with indefinite detention policies criticize via speech or postings their revulsion with the policies that keep them safe to spew their garbage on Ghanaians with pea brains and or incite them to make Ghana ungovernable by the government.
The one thing that is clear about those who see Nkrumah era Prevention detention laws as a blemish or a negative on Nkrumah's record either fail to appreciate people with foresight, people with wisdom above their time and peers or do so for tribal reasons. They are the very people who prefer some sins over others and evil done in the name of preferred tribe or political party acceptable than those of others. Nkrumah gave Ghana, his motherland, developments and freedoms all the governments that came after 1966 have not been able to give Ghana put together. Does the NPP not discriminate against the NDC and others in employment and acts of selective prosecutions? Does the NDC not do the same and some more? Yet do both parties do pretend we live in a democracy? To most Nkrumah critics any evil done by their kinfolks, puppet masters in the name of delusional democracy we live in Ghana makes evils acceptable than those ills under a one party system or socialism and all other forms of government. You cannot find a collection of classroom educated but ignorant group at work until one listen to reasons to hate Nkrumah.

Stop reading the garbage on Ghanaweb and get proper education on the history of Ghana!
Ironically, despite the rubbish you Nkrumaists hoods like to spew out the first group of victims of that repressive Act comprised the entire leadership of GA Shifimo Kpee. In a swoop a little over 30 law abiding citizens were detained. Significantly, none of these initial detainees was from the Ashanti Region or Akim Abuakwa Traditional Area. Other waves of detention followed unabated. Yet there was no bombs being thrown anywhere in the country!
Get a life, CPP loser!

I do not know your age, but those who were born before the 1940 through to 1960 and knew the Ghana Kwame Nkrumah brought us in, will down play the PDA you are making noise of and tell you of the good times they enjoyed in those years. Most form 4 school leavers that time were better educated then a Uni. graduate of this your so called democracy which appears uncaring and obsessed with financial targets, forgetting that that governance is about serving all the citizens of the country and not just the few in power and their families. It is not about stealing and the mass corruption we are witnessing now in our dear country. It was all about what Kwame was trying to do to get us out of the dark colonial exploitation. We have all suffered the triumph of disappointment over potentials in Ghana because of people like you. What do you know about the history of Ghana? Think about the many suffering people of the country and stop talking about that great man Kwame Nkrumah After all what have you done yourself to help your country? My friend, know that the toad does not run out in a daytime unless some one is after it. Know from me that Ghana is not about Ashanti region or Akim Abuakwa Traditional area you are talking about. Let us pray for a leader like Kwame Nkrumah who will make us all feel like been part of a team to harness our creative potentials and chase out the coup plotters and bomb throwers. Have a good night.

As a graduate from the UP/NLM school of outright lies and a bona fide member of the Ahoofe Institute of Ignoble Scholars, KKO, is always eager to peddle lies. Well, the historical evidence does not support your ahistorical stuff. Read the facts below and shut up.
From The Fate of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independence, by Martin Meredith (PublicAffairs, 2005), pp. 24-27:
After winning the 1954 election, Nkrumah seemed set to make rapid progress towards independence. But he encountered unexpected resistance centred on his conduct of government. In the final stages of colonial rule, the Gold Coast, once a model colony, was riven by such bitterness, division and violence that it appeared in danger of breaking up.
At the core of the crisis was cocoa money. To protect cocoa farmers from price fluctuations, the colonial authorities had established a Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) which each year fixed a guaranteed price for farmers and acted as the sole buyer, grader, seller and exporter of cocoa. Once in office, Nkrumah instructed the CMB to keep the price as low as possible, aiming to raise funds for development projects. But the CMB soon became notorious for corruption and mismanagement; it was regularly exploited to distribute credit, contracts, commissions, licences and jobs to CPP [Convention People’s Party] supporters. An official investigation revealed that the CPP used a CMB subsidiary to enrich the party’s coffers, to coerce farmers into joining the party and to control petty commerce.
Soon after the 1954 election, Nkrumah announced that the price paid to farmers would be fixed for a period of four years at a level less than one-third of ruling world prices. This decision provoked a surge of anger across Asante, the central forest region where half of the country’s cocoa crop was grown. Not only farmers but cocoa traders, merchants and businessmen based in the Asante capital, Kumasi, resented the loss of income. A new opposition party, the National Liberation Movement (NLM), sprang up, proclaiming to defend Asante interests and culture against a central government it portrayed as corrupt, dictatorial and bent on undermining the beliefs and customs of the Asante people. With the blessing of the Asante paramount chiefs and backed by fervent support in the Asante heartland, the NLM demanded a federal constitution prior to independence, giving Asante and other areas that wanted it a substantial measure of local autonomy.
Nkrumah saw the issue as a struggle between a modern democratic government and the feudal power of traditional chiefs trying to protect the old order. But he misjudged the extent of popular support for Asante institutions. As the NLM and Nkrumah’s CPP struggled for ascendancy, violent disturbances broke out. A bomb attack was made on Nkrumah’s house in Accra. Alarmed by the disorders, the British government refused to set a date for independence and eventually insisted on resolving the issue by calling another general election. At the polls in July 1956, Nkrumah’s CPP won an outright majority, 72 of 104 seats, though only 57 per cent of the votes cast. While the CPP received 398,000 votes, the opposition tally was 299,000 votes. Satisfied with the result, Britain finally pronounced a date for independence: 6 March 1957.

Is time to think differently and pursue policies that will create real jobs to the masses. And to get the right direction we have to revisit the Nkrumah and CPP paradigm of development.
Let give meaning to what is permanently in the interests of Ghanaians and Africa. African unity and self reliance

Those who complain about Nkrumah' s governance style are just being mischievous. I was a toddler when he was overthrown and so could not have really felt how he governed. But his development projects and efforts are there for us all to see and enjoy today I think it is a fact that he was the best leader Ghana has ever had given all that we have come to know. The PDA was indeed unfortunate but may be even justifiable given the threats on his life then both at Kulungugu and in the Accra Sports stadium. But we also see today and since 1966 how all our leaders have abused our rights without much development to match the abuses. So between them and Nkrumah who had development to show who do we applaud? My sure bet is Nkrumah even with the PDA. Is the PDA very different from all the military dictatorships and civilian regimes with limits on individual freedoms and police brutality and excesses we have witnessed in some of the so called more democratic dispensations? Of course over the years some leaders have been closer to Nkrumah than others in terms of their vision for Ghana but truth be told some have been so far away you wonder where we headed under them and where we are heading next.

You are part of the crop of semi-illiterate young Ghanaian men and women who cannot read simple sentences and make meaningful judgement of them.
Just read my posting and ask yourself what is ignorant about it. All the people you have mentioned in your posting were staunch CPP members, who hated Busia with a passion. Why would they work with Busia to hurt their own "Show Boy?" PDA was passed in 1958, Kulungugu was 1962. So what is the relationship between PDA and bomb-throwing by Nkrumah's own CPP thugs?
Ghana had three universities in 1966, with a total intake of less than five thousand students. How many universities are there in Ghana today, and what is the total student population?
In 1966, there were only about 2000 kilometres of tarred roads in Ghana. Ask yourself how many there are today. Nkrumah literally killed private industry in Ghana. Just ask yourself how many private genuine business men and women there are in Ghana today?
These statistics make complete nonesense of your fixation with Kwame Nkrumah. Why don't you Mkrumaists learn to move into the 21st century, just in case Ghanaians would see anything good in you and begin to push you beyond your usual 3% at national elections?
