Excellent contribution to the debate on how to manage this chronic problem. I would add that once graduated, the "doctors" would have an initial service term, and would have to attain a service performance level, otherwise would be terminated from public service. Those who elect not to serve after obtaining their free medical education, would have to reimburse the people of Ghana who sponsored thier education. Just like the US system you referr to, which I am very familiar, the re-enlistment package should be attractive to encourage high performance and desire for the retained doctors to want to stay/continue. However, if one is unhappy or beleive they can do better in the private sector, there would be breakpoints to allow them to leave. Thats how the US public service and the military retain highly skilled doctors who choose not to enter private sector despite its lure.

The Doctors` Association, has cleverly been allowed to gain a priviledged(special status) position in our society, which it[the GMA] has exploited to the group`s own corporate interests.
I mean, is it any wonder these two groups, or its top leadership, have always taken a partisan position, rather than a national one, in their dealings with different administrations, that is, its support of a particular political party?
Why can`t the State[represented by a government in charge of running the affairs of the nation as a whole] not exercise its enormous power to grant recognition[by way of the Charters it grants to these Universities/Higher Learning Institutions], revoke same, and thus render the 'monopoly position' enjoyed by these 'greedy bastards' worthless? Without a license to practise what can these doctors do? We are know that many who opted to ply their trade elsewhere, have ended up becoming hospital auxilliary, cab drivers, etc, because they lack a license to work as physicians. If these professional bodies can revoke the licenses of their members, why not the State?
To me waiting till the eleventh hour to 'import' and handful of Cuban Doctors is not a bold way of asserting the State`s enormous power and authority in this dispute; and see the author`s proposal as a serious way of strengthening the govt`s hand.

Check your facts aren't the fire service personnel pampered? They have all kinds of aloiwNces so what's wrong with meh asking for conditions of service, the problem I'd recurring becos everyone thinks docs swear an oath and its a calling, calling my foot, the pastors who are called live in nice houses and charge consultations! What about the welfare of those who doctors and their families, who takes care of them and their families when they bring diseases from work. The. Senior lecturer in the university. Takes more than the most senior consultant in moh and still has benefits, please , stop it, at a point everyone's education was govt funded so don't be hippo critical , send ur child to med school and u will note that it's not worth what it cost to train becos they earn so little on completion.it takes 12yrs of training to become a specilaist and diagnose a case in 5mins.a doctor can't even afford to send their children to medical school!
Why can't doctors have conditions of service like all essential services?

There's nothing wrong with asking for better conditions of service. There's a lot wrong with holding the health of the nation hostage. Can you imagine what will happen if the police go on strike and leave the populace at the mercy of armed robbers just because they are demanding some lofty non-negotiable conditions of service? I hope the doctors will be content with the conditions of service of Senior Lecturers in the Universities as you seem to be implying.

The GMA is the problem and must solve it by itself. Members of the GMA are chasing money too much, as such they do not have time for other problems including their own conditions of service and working environment.
