Aaron, You are spot on with this piece. You couldnt have put it in a better way. Let me add that advocating for Private Voluntary Standards will be more sustainable as most SHFs are not able to on their own, maintain the Globalgap certificate beyond 1 or 2 years especially after the withdrawal of a sponsoring organization. This mainly is due to audit and inspection cost as well as the infrastructure required to maintain the this certification. The so-called group certification has neither solved the problem.
Also I believe one the worries expressed at same forum by exporters was how the cargo village at the airport supposed to be a one-stop house for all inspection agencies is now taken over by Ghana airport company. Stakeholders were of the view that just as is done in Kenya and other places, Ghana must have a modern and well resourced facility that operates 24/7 where all inspection agencies could efficiently carry out their duties without hindrance. Again I agree with you that lot more technical upgrading needs to be conducted for our producers. This hasn't have to do with whether a person is able to read and write or not. In any case how many of our SHFs are able to read and write. Most important is their capacity build to know the right thing and this involved continuous sensitization and education. Lastly our exporters should also be interested in what is happening at production level. There is quite a disjoint between production and export. Most just go to these producers only when the produce is ready. This does not help. They should have the courage to even undertake some of the production themselves and source minimal quantities from outside.
And with MOFA completely neglected and relegated, by government what else can we expect!
