Good article,except it fails to include similar dishes from the northern regions of Ghana.Fufu is a generic name for variations of the same food using yam, cassava,millet ect across West Africa.

The CPP incorporated Marx's philosophy which has now been discredited as a mode of running a country or any organization. Even the Russians have ran away from Marx's Socialism which Nkrumah had adopted. And, which forms the basis of your FUF philosophizing. Of course, given the political economy of geopolitics of the era, Socialism seemed a better alternative for the untrained mind, and those who feared competition….the bedrock of the free enterprise capitalist mode of economic development.
Alas, the Soviet Union collapsed, revealing a Russian underbelly of underdevelopment.
I am still waiting to see an item “Made in Russia.” Russia is now just a GAS Station, to borrow the words of American Senator John McCain.
The point is: In order to distribute wealth, wealth must FIRST be created. Otherwise one risks becoming, as the Asante aphorism advises/warns “Suminaso ntonkom, ?nwae nwae ho, aama me any? yie.
To wit: The trash dump (Suminaso) provides natural fertilizer for the growth of plants, whose leaves then become easy pickings for all, resulting in indiscriminate abuse and harvesting of the leaves, and other edibles provided by such plant. Lesson: because of uncontrolled harvesting, the plant withers and never reaches full bloom. The CPP adopted such a policy and was helped by several factors: the resources were aplenty in 1957; the population was very small in 1957; the people were largely ignorant, therefore the stage was perfect. But just like the Suminaso plant analogy, when resources dwindle, the state collapses. Such was the situation in Ghana in 1965, when people had to form lines to buy needed goods and medicine from the stores, among other national hardships.
So, my CPP friend, you may philosophize and wax poetic about the ingredients and preparation of Fufu as an everlasting cultural presence similar to what you call “great philosophical systems.” However, you forget that in the case of Fufu as a main stay cultural phenomenon, the farmer ensures that the ingredients are plentiful by dint of hard work, thus cementing the cultural affinity of FUFU.
Nor does your attempt to frame the debate against other parties hold water. I speak for the NPP on this matter. When the NPP created wealth, it used the wealth accrued to put forth poverty alleviation policies and programs. The School Feeding program. Free health Insurance. Major infrastructural developments nationwide, etc., etc.. After all, African cultural lives is indeed community-based. Communalism is in our lifeblood. But the sort of enforced socialist policies of a bygone era belongs to that bygone era. The Capitalist Free enterprise economic system engenders competition, and success. It also generates and creates wealth and Philanthropy amongst governments and individuals for the benefit of the general populace.
I do not begrudge your claim that “CPP is our culture transposed politically.“ Unlike the Socialist which is anchored in force and totalitarian dictatorship, Free enterprise goes pari-passu with liberal political culture. After all, it is in Freedom that the best of the human capabilities are ensured. Therefore, as such a believer in that system, I grant you your right to believe in your philosophical claims to whatever politico-cultural mores you are tethered to, no matter how simplistic or unworkable they may be for this time!
And please do not tell me that Sweden, France, or Norway is Socialist, as people of your political persuasion tend to do when assaulted by the truth. Nor is China!
CPP was Marxist Leninist. That era is passé.
Enjoy Fufu, but mind the socialist philosophical cheap otherwise, you risk getting the Fufu stuck in your esophagus.
