I remember going home on vacation 2 years ago and seeing how people drove in Ghana. I just about had a fit, not to mention the close calls I had driving from Accra to Takoradi.
Drivers overtaking other drivers around corners and curves, overtaking going up hills and being absolutely blind to what was coming towards them in the opposite direction.
Just watching such activities scared the living daylights out of me and made me wonder if there was any organized institutionalized driver training in my home country.
The scariest close call I had was just about 4km from the main CAPE VARS GATE where one lunatic of a driver was so much a haste that he had overtaken about 6 other cars in stretch and didn't give a shit about who had the right of way in reference to those of us who were driving towards him.
My only savior was the driver in front me who all of a sudden, did a hard right and pulled unto the shoulder of the road giving me a clear view of what was hurtling towards me from the opposite direction in my lane of the road.
The only option left for me was to do exactly what my savior driver did. I also did a hard right pull unto the shoulder with just mere seconds to spare.
I sat in my car for about 10 minutes after this to gather myself together and plan how I was going to be a defensive driver for the remainder of my journey to Takoradi and survive to see my mom and other family members.
Infact, for the rest of my stay in Ghana, I promised myself to drive defensively and not become part of the highway statistics of carnage.
So Angie... it's a given that our roads are a mess but until drivers in Ghana learn the simple ABC's of driving, the carnage will continue to mount.
Don't get me wrong here... I'm not saying better roads wouldn't help. We need better roads but we also need very responsible and careful drivers and the two agencies most responsible in weeding out those "DARE DEVIL" drivers are the DVLA and the traffic units of the GHANA POLICE FORCE. Until these two agencies are completely overhauled regarding bribery and corruption, the statistics will not change for the better.
Of course we also need our law courts to be strict in prosecuting and jailing these drivers causing havoc our roads and highways.
Some people don't deserve to be given permission to even ride pedal bicycles, let alone driver's licenses to drive an automobile. Period!!!
