My brother I am so sad and worry a lot about the future of mother Ghana. The future looks bleak. The system we have now is a mess. No mention of Geography, History, Civics, Home Economics, etc. Instead we now have Social Studies, BDT, Pre-Tech, what a joke! As I try to teach my kids I realize that the JSS system is a complete waste of time and effort. It is as if we want to bring the University education right into the doorstep of these young ones. Things that we learned at the sixth form is being taught at the JSS level. What is worst is that we are not even giving them enough time to assimilate them. How can you use three years to learn the sciences. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics need time for one to get the complete grasp of these stuff. Why are we rushing these kids only to dump them on the streets? I cry for mother Ghana. We are fast descending into the bottomless pit.
What benefit has the so-called revolution brought us as a people? Rawlings must answer to Ghanaians.

We should relised there is a lot of distractions nowadays for the children to learn as compared to those days.Gone are the days when most students used lanterns and wake up in the middle of the nights to study.Gone are the days when some students use to walk distance to the Ashanti library in cultural centre to read and borrow books. TVs were few and only limited programs like the Akan dram which only comes on Sundays and no mobile phones.
Looking at today's problem, most people have 24 hours TVs in their rooms. Most pupil and students are addicted to mobile phones, social media, computer games etc instead of their books. Yet the serious one has gone further to become doctors, engineers, accountants etc. It shouldn't be made to look as if there were no failures with the old systems. Common entrance wasn't the best, because a lot of brilliant pupil were dropped simply because they could not make it through the common entrance system. It is time all of us should try to push and encourage our students to study rather than putting in their minds that it is the system, with that complacency they become more lazy.A lot of learning materials are in the internet now instead of computer games only.Read,read,read,read.

So how can a hungry teacher teach his/her students. We know teaching is not an easy job.All incentives to students have ceased too. Also lets ask ourselves how much funds does the current government put in education in each quota or year. As a matter of fact there are more questions that need to be tackled if Ghana's Education is to competitive again.

No secondary education system. Senior school leaver with good marks in English, Maths and Science can go to the University.
Junior High School and Senior High school have no meanings and must be abolished and replaced by Junior School and Senior School respectively.

Compare to the new system whereby students learn new subjects like, technical drawing, home economics, visual acts, agric, science, maths, engish etc.
Comparing subject to subject the old system is not good.Lets encourage the students to read more and less of their computer games and social media.

Quality education is decisive not duration. Focus on quality is what we want.
Many African pupils educated in the UK, Europe and the US in good Independent Schools do six years in Primary School education and six years in Secondary School with Sixth Form education and they are excellent products. Most of them pass 12 to 15 subjects at General Certificate Education Ordinary Level and 3 to 4 at General Certificate Education Advanced Level before entering the University to specialize for three years for their first degree, finishing at the age of 19 or 20.
The academic excellent results are self-evident in dedicated teachers, the school discipline and focus of the students without distractions of poverty.
The same excellent results can be achieved in any well-equipped African School based in any country in Africa.

Stephen,
This is a good piece, but part of your historical premise is wrong. You state, “
It was, however, a system inherited from the colonial days from a colonial master whose own educational system had changed. There was a need for us to change too. This change was made at the beginning of 1993/94 academic year by the former president, J. J. Rawlings. The new system comprised six years of primary, three years of Junior high and three years of Senior high schools.”
The original JSS system was devised by the Busia regime in 1969, to cut down on the number of years we spent in school, and for good reason. First of all, the old Middle School Leaving Certificate Examination or “Hall” had become completely useless by the mid-1960s. Its products could not be used for anything, apart from the few that managed to go into the training colleges, technical institutes and vocational schools.
Busia’s government planned a pilot scheme, with JSS schools at Kinbu, Koforidua, Kumasi Cape Coast and a few other regional capitals. There was a gradual programme to turn all training colleges into diploma awarding institutions, to train teachers for the new system and a planned scheme to monitor the products of the pilot scheme. Even the greatly vilified Acheampong saw it fit to maintain that programme.
Then the armed robber Jerry Rawlings in his usual unthinking and selfish ways brought in Mohammed Bed-Abdallah and Aanaa Aning, to rush through the change so his wife and cronies could benefit from the purchase of inferior carpentry tools and uniforms from China. Within a year, most of those tools were sold to wayside carpenters and the uniforms became known as “Aanaa Mmotoa mu”!
After destroying the education system, he spirited away his own children to study under the same system that he and his friends were vilifying in Ghana. Yes, we need a real change that will not only involve four years of senior secondary education, but one that includes technical and vocational education and apprenticeships, for the less academically able.
The (P)NDC governments have benefited from the fact that a majority of Ghanaian school leavers are functionally illiterate, people they use as cannon fodder for their stealing and roguery. My personal sadness is the fact that the underprivileged in Ghanaian society still cannot see them for the nation wreckers that they are!

Well my fellow readers, it has well been said by the writer and this to me is a lovely masterpiece.
I have been a teacher if not for nothing at all at least 10years and I do see the huge difference between the A and O levels and our so called High School Students.
Come to think of it, it's not that they cant speak good english but my major concern is that the Ghanaian child ceases to learn when he is out of a classroom without any supervision.
It is high time we all wake up to the stark reality that our colleges and universities are producing nothing but puppets and robots who can not function with their mind to establish their own business than what they can do for others.
This 21st century presents us with massive opportunities for us to wake up now and live and forget about our leaders cos they just dont care.
Do you people think our leaders are not aware of the disparity that exist between the graduates of today and that of yester years?
Come on! I assure you they know of all this but they just want to maintain the league, the status quo where they and their children rule over the masses because after their schooling here they all tend to travel abroad for better education and then come and take their parents place.
All of you who are reading this, I want you to know that if you want to wait for our leaders to make any drastic change, then forget it cos it wont happen.
The best we can do is start something for ourselves and let those who are willing to take thier lives into their own hands. I mean we start some sorts of revolution that tends to work of the mentalities and beliefs of the youth in order for them to shun school.
Yes shun school when they are forced to take courses they dont like and so on. If you will love to be part of the most exciting revolution about to happen in ghana please go to facebook and like our page DROPOUTS VOICE GHANA and later follow up to our site at DROPOUTSVOICEGHANADOTCOM and read what is about to happen and leave comments and make our leaders wake up to the stark reality that if they are not ready to do it for us, then we will do it ourselves.
