It is said that 1 kilometer of asphalted two lane road costs $400,000 in Ghana which is far in excess of costs in neighbouring countries. Assuming that the runway is 4 times as wide and only 500 meters long that should be $800,000. Assuming that the runway had a base of reinforced concrete similar to American highways that should put the total cost at not more than $1.5 million dollars. Labor costs are 20 times cheaper in Ghana.
This is totally outrageous.

Papa Appiah, did you consider the security implications of having Afoko and Agyapong at this particular press conference aimed to calm nerves? The ideal thing is to have the two at the conference but since the pressure seems to be coming from the grass root, it is possible some irate supporters could attack them, which would have taken the shine out of the occasion. Now that the flagbearer has calmed nerves, then I expect him to invite the two for meeting to discuss the way forward.

What grass-root? Even so, Nana created the groundswell that excited that grass-root, and he could, just as easily as he prompted them, preceded the appearance of the two with him on the stage, as Papa Appiah suggested, with an enthusiastic conciliatory introduction of their eventual presence. Timing is very important in Politics. Nana has yet to learn how to take advantage of opportune moments.
However, your suggestion of their later joint Public appearance might just begin to straighten up the mess.

If they are refusing to step aside, they can stay in their offices and listen to Asempa Fm all day. The campaign will go on without them and their supporters. Besides what makes you think they and their few supporters will vote for Nana if they become an integral part of the team? These are the political realities. Nana will be committing suicide to trust a person who has threatened not to sign campaign forms for even parliamentarians. Kuffour obviously was not stupid when he fired Agyepong.

Papa Appiah, I enjoyed reading your excellent piece. In fact, I had told a friend that what was required was for Nana Akufo-Addo to come out and call for a ceasefire and order that the Chairman and General Secretary must be given unimpeded access to the their offices at the party Headquarters. But if he intended to call a press conference to do that then he would have scored a major political victory had he done so together with the two. Your day dreaming was spot on.
Fiifi Moree, what security threat are you talking about? What is happening is lawlessness and not security threat. Those who are occupying the party HQ in the name of security should be arrested and prosecuted for public nuisance. No party member, not even Nana Akufo-Addo should prevent the democratically elected Chairman and General Secretary from having access to the party HQ without due process.
Until this unfortunate and sad incident, I had assumed that Nana Akufo-Addo was a strong leader but how he has handled this case has exposed him as a very weak leader. It's no surprise to me because Ghana is experiencing a leadership crisis. Mahama is no different and cannot call his ministers, appointees and party members to order.

Kofi,
What exactly did you want Nana to do, apart from trying to calm the nerves of those who are obviously peeved and saddened by what could have happened to any of their colleagues in the regions?
Grassroots organisations in six out of the ten regions of the country have passed a vote of "no confidence" in the CHairman and General Secretary of the party. Does it require rocket science for anyone to know that they are not wanted? Why have they not simply resigned? Why does Nana have to taint the rest of the party organisation with people whose obvious actions and inactions have led to the sad death of such a prominent party member?
Since Afoko's brother has now been officially charged with murder, what is his business still holding on to that charade of a position? Granted, Kwabena Agyepong's name has not been mentioned in connection with the acid attack, but was it not their collective disagreement with Mahama that ultimately led to attack on him?
For now at least, Nana Akufo-Addo could not have done anymore than trying to douse the fires, as he has done with this press conference!

Thank you, Papa Appiah! That is a well written piece. Incidentally, I had preceded the Speech with my own conjecturing of two possible scenarios that Nana might present. One was similar to your optimistic, redeeming dream to resurrect the exuberant hope of the Party with Nana's humble, bold and amiable reaching out to Afoko and Agyepong. The other was the worse option that I feared would closely reflect the worrying trait I had long detected in the Flagbearer as being most divisive--his arrogant, silent snob.
Unfortunately, Nana fulfilled my fears instead of my hopes, most disappointingly. Nevertheless, I was not shocked that he would demonstrate such passive effort for reconciliation because I realized he was only continuing on the same inimical path that he led the Party on to reach this current debacle.
Well, the majority fair-minded members and sympathizers of the Party must be the best judges of what the fate of the Party is heading to with that kind of leadership.
Now, we can see in no uncertain terms, 'fiili, fiili', who is working against unity in the Party. Nana's supporters have always claimed: "It has never been Nana's fault. He can't be fallible. And it is all Afoko's and Kwabena Agyepong's fault." Baloney!
The Speech has nothing to offer for a real change to end the chaos. He could have even used the occasion to apologize to President Kufuor, among others, on behalf of those who have been insulting the former President and his associates, and accusing them of masterminding the Murder of Mahama Adams. But Nana wasn't astute enough a statesman to show that magnanimity.

I am profoundly shocked by your view that the comedy going is so important that you write a piece about it.
there are critical and emergent issues that are pertinent in Ghana and for you to attach importance to this soap opera and write about it has to do with your political intentions or to please someone.
In a recent article, Cameron Duodu captured my views correctly and I have copied & pasted a few bullets from him as follows:
Have you no pity? Is it not bad enough that our country has been reduced to a Village of Darkness?
Do you want to condemn Ghanaians to more hours of slumber-less repose?
Do you not care that your fellow-citizens throw away meat, vegetables and fresh fruit on a daily basis, because there is only rottenness to be seen in the freezers that are supposed to keep such products fresh?
Do you not shudder when you hear of an increase in the price of petroleum products at a time when crude oil prices are falling on the world market?
Are you not frightened by the unrelenting increase in the size of our foreign debt? In the 3 months ending March 31, 2015, a whopping GHC12 billion cedis was added. Are we for real?
Care you not that the national accounts indicate that our expenditure constantly exceeds our revenue, and yet there is no tangible evidence that our infrastructure is being improved or augmented?
Do you not see the effects of inflation around you?
Can you comprehend what the poor in society must be suffering if those relatively well-off are reduced to complaining about economic hardship?

Brother Seek,
Thank you for the rejoinder and doing it respectfully, instead of the normal insults we get on this thread.
For the last 3 elections I voted for the NDC. Based on what has happened in Ghana and is still happening, the massive corruption, typical example the Kumasi Airport costs etc, I believe that despite the loss of Brother Adams, we need to start moving because of the emergency situation that the Mills/Mahama govt has plunged the country into.
Any attempt to prolong the impact of the Agyepong/Afoko/Adams matter, with further recriminations and accusations must stop. I am on a trip in the USA now, but when I am back in Ghana, I will take a trip to U/E Region to visit Adams family and may even setup an Account nationally for like-minded people to donate to the Adams family.
Granted that human life is more important than the issues we face, however, enough is enough, let us move on. The issues facing us, as a country, are so critical that we don’t need to further exacerbate this issue with articles that will further inflame the anger of all sides, unless one has a specific agenda such as Kofi Adams, Asiedu Nketiah, Omane Boamah, Anyidoho etc
The tragedy for me personally, is for the so-called members of the NPP family to be escalating this issue, giving fodder to the failed NDC government, giving the appearance that they are in bed with them. I have been in the NDC a long time, and they have nothing to offer this country except propaganda and do not have the ability to address national issues. For a long-standing NPP member to provide fodder to the failed NDC nation-builders is unfortunate and almost reckless and short-sighted.
Unless an NPP family member has another agenda, they will know enough is enough at this point, after everybody and their grandmother has commented.

How does a man's size have anything to do with his brain power (intelligence). Statistically your assertion cannot be supported especially if compared to John Mahama, if one compares how the latter has brought the nation to its knees.
Oil revenues to Ghana under Mills/Mahama have been $14B dollars and I am not sure what has been done with it. Don’t you care that Ghana's accounts show that our expenditure constantly exceeds our revenue, and yet there is no tangible evidence that our infrastructure is being improved?
Why are you talking about a man's size when the so-called tall big men are stealing and clearly incompetent? Are you trying to divert attention with propaganda to sway little minds?
The accusation that Nana Addo was behind Adams Mahama's murder is too premature, I will allow the police to finish their investigations, assuming that there will be no repeat of the police fiasco around Nkwanta NDC man's murder here, where the Police is yet to lay charges, six months down the line.

Unless our intent is to let the looting and incompetence by the NDC gov’t (that I have voted for in the last 3 elections) continue, I don’t see why our comments about the size of Nana Addo matters to the democratic dispensation.
John Mahama, with the size you would want to see in a president, swindled Ghana when he led in the purchase of the Presidential jet with Embraer of Brazil. Mills set up a committee to investigate the purchase, but the committee was disbanded by John Mahama after Mills died.
In the first 3 months of 2015, Mahama has added 12 billion Ghana cedis to our debt portfolio with no noticeable development evidence of our infrastructure being improved?
Does Akufo Addo size matter when the national coffers are being looted by the NDC? Help me, my fellow patriot, to understand this
