Dr. Kwabena Akurang-Parry is confusing academic exercise with the type of politics being played on Ghana web. When intemperate language is being used by SAS and co,it is only proper and fair that they are answered back in the language they best understand. The Akurang intervention did not balance the weight of aggression from the sas camp but rather saw it in the academic terms of balance and fair reasoning. But even in academic moot point language, one is bound to be evaluative and deductive and the weight of the argument must be commensurate to your opponents weight.

If I recall very well, as a historian, Dr. Parry just called for nuance, and Prof. Lungu's apt response bears out Parry. Our discourses on Ghanaweb need not be ad hominem attacks, etc. Our ideas have to be refined as academics do in journals and books and that is Parry's call. If we can do this Ghanaweb would be a better place to promote ideas and developments.

Prof.Lungu was very charitable in his responses to the ignorant and vile assaults on Nkrumah and his supporters by Sarfo - who was educated at a GET school and the University of Cape Coast - all built or established by the great Osagyefo and the CPP government. Were it not for Nkrumah, this middle-aged man(a Slip and Fall lawyer),who recently got out of law school in Texas, would have been an illiterate farmer or hunter - barefooted and half-naked eating AMPESIE for breakfast on his farm.
As you can see, yours truly pulls no punches and tells it like it is(To paraphrase a verse in Ecclesiastes, there is a time to be nice and a time to tell some fools off). And also, yours truly is ready to take anybody on intellectually at any other forum.By the way, some of us don't have to parade our degrees around here - like some typical Africans do.
Prof.Lungu should not apologize to any fool.Kudos to him and Kwarteng.

Joe-Frank,
It is not our purpose to "attack personalities" on Ghanaweb.
We believe that we have been fair to all essayists on Ghanaweb on whose work we've ever commented.
However, we generally do not extend that courtesy to public officials: they are paid to get things right; make things transparent; use resources wisely; and have opted to occupy publicly-funded "official" positions on their own free will. Even with them, we are careful not to go off the reservation with our critiques.
Here is a link to a sample of some of our earlier essays on Ghanaweb.

Often times, it is difficult to comprehend some statements and "charges" from Kwabena.
THIS: "...I believe SAS' father was a cocoa farmer so he has every right to have been educated there..."
OUR COMMENT: As you've stated, there is cocoa all over Ghana; that resources to develop a community as Nkrumah envisioned come in the types, "human and natural," at the minimum.
Maybe the population that owned access to the sea and the shipyards from which all the cocoa was shipped could have sent a bill to all the cocoa farmers, timber foresters, and so on and so forth.
And if Prof Lungu's grandfather, grand mother, and uncles also had cocoa farms and were in agreement, even though they were not CPP, where does that thinking take us?
Finally, what about the daughters and sons of cocoa farmers, and others, who were just as good academically but maybe were not as lucky as the elites we discuss in the essay? What ought to have been their lot?
Maybe Kwabena can help us, as a way of clarifying himself! What should we say?
To each according to their.......!

I have always believed that fora like Ghanaweb are excellent avenues for the privileged Ghanaians (because not many of our compatriots have access to computers, and even access to twenty-four hour Internet), should use these privileges to debate issues dispassionately and bring up concrete suggestions that will move our country forward. Instead, we use them mostly to antagonise each other on the two main sides of the Ghanaian political spectrum.
I believe that at the beginning, Dr Adjei-Sarfo’s main theses were that i) “Yes, Kwame Nkrumah did his best, BUT with such a huge store of resources at his disposal, he could have done batter ii) PDA was an obnoxious Law, which was unnecessarily applied not only against political opponents, but totally innocent Ghanaians as well, and that iii) Kwame Nkrumah did not need to declare Ghana a one-party state and life-Presidency for himself.”
These are sentiments that were shared by the vast majority of Ghanaians, including EVERYONE of Kwame Nkrumah’s own minsters to the man or woman, after February 24 1966. This is an undisputed fact that EVERY HONEST Ghanaian aged 13 (Secondary School form 1) or older can testify to.
Yes, Adjei-Sarfo has employed intemperate language at times, but I believe he was forced to go down that path. I know people whose lives were totally damaged because their parents and/or benefactors were imprisoned under PDA because people wanted their lands, stools or even wives. Some of those people came out of prison crippled, blinded or prematurely aged. Today, some of their relations will not touch anything CPP with a ten foot pole.
Let us admit that like all things human, mistakes have been made in our 58 year march to development. Because we seem not have learnt any lessons from our mistakes, today even countries in Africa who were light years behind Ghana, have overtaken us in nearly every aspect of human development.
What we need is to be honest about the unpalatable parts of our history, learn from them and begin to demand accountability from those ‘pretenders of leaders’ that have been messing with our dear country!

These premises you call theses are not true and therefore the conclusions are false. Each of the claims you make there are being contested. For example the PDA has being argued as accessory for the events at the time.
I also disagree that these were sentiments shared by the vast majority of Ghanaians, including EVERYONE of Kwame Nkrumah’s own minsters to the man or woman, after February 24 1966 as you put it.Was it the holding of guns to their head to say what the soldiers want to hear or what?
The truth of the matter is that all the measures taken by Dr Nkrumah were justified and supported by the constitution and parliament in line with the rule of law.Your conclusion arising from those premises must there be a figment of your imagination.Of course I believe in nuances but it must be two way affair otherwise you will unfairly occupy the morale ground.

We believe that Kenneth makes the better point in this exchange. We can employ today's standards to condemn events more than 2 generations removed. That, however, cannot go back to solve the generations-old hurt(s).
The blanket statement that suggests that Nkrumah was practically unwelcome by Ghanaians before and after the 1966 coup d'etat is false on so many grounds.
Further, to claim that, "...Yes, Adjei-Sarfo has employed intemperate language at times, but I believe he was forced to go down that path...", is to put it mildly, not nuanced.
So, if we may ask, who is truly responsible for the "forcing"? It cannot be the PDA, can it, given what we know about the origins of the law - that it was enacted by elected officials.
RE YOUR: ..."Do you think Ghanaians should just sit down and not do anything if President Mahama use the Ndc majority in Parliament and make Ndc the only legitimate party and himself President for life?...."
OUR COMMENT: This is 2015 and we have the benefit of that history, at the lentil-level, so to speak. And so, when another Party thought there were issues with an election, they went to the Court of Law. As far as we know, they did not organize among themselves, and with others outside Ghana, to attempt to have their own way. (That is all we want to say about this particularly subject).
Therefore, your "Kenneth, that is exactly what you are saying", seems to us entirely off-base.

Quaison-Sackey was with Kwame Nkrumah in Peking (Beijing). He was given a plane to fly to the OAU Conference in Addis Ababa, to represent Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana, which people like Nyerere, Sekou Toure, and even his old enemy Houphuet Boigny, were expecting. Quaison-Sackey, as the substantive Minister of Foreign Affairs, diverted the flight to Accra, to denounce his boss. So who exactly had a gun pointed at his/her head to denounce Kwame Nkrumah, his own Ebusua Panyin who spoke to the newspapers in March 1966?
Apart from political opponents, the PDA was used to jail innocent Ghanaians who were reported by CPP goons. People were sent to jail under PDA for prohibiting their children from going to Young Pioneer meetings. Is that what you are trying to defend? I still have friends living in Ghana whose fathers were threatened even in the villages. The records are there in the reports of the numerous commissions of enquiry of 1966. It wouldn’t take much to find those out. Sometimes I feel so sad when I hear/read arguments like yours, with little regard to verifiable facts!

They have always been contested, by Nkrumah himself. His Dark Days in Ghana alone torn into shreds the claims that he squandered some money left for us by the British. I myself have been challenging those claims recently again, giving a historical account of how the reserve was accumulated by the CPP regime under Nkrumah and how that led to the emergence of the NLM that wanted more money from the cocoa price boon, against advice given Nkrumah by Nobel laureate in Econs, Arthur Lewis!

SAS is stuck in an intellectual doldrum in that intellectual haven called Texas. Where he spends his time pulling worms out of the ass of the other fake and useless piece of human trash called Ahoofe. Now going by the exchanges between him and Ahoofe, one can only conclude that SAS is vile, disgusting and a lying piece of trash. Ahoofe is a bottom feeder and a piece of trash too. So it will take someone extremely vile to get Ahoofe's goat. If a carrion eater like Ahoofe finds SAS objectionable, then we know what sort of character we are dealing with here.
So having no prospects and stuck at chasing ambulances, doing pitiful real estate closings and being aware that no monuments would be built in his name he does what every low life scumbag does. Try to tarnish the image of those who achieved more than him. Unfortunately nothing he does on this pathetic site that indulges him will change the fact that he'll be forgotten while Nkrumah will be remembered. That he's stuck in a foreign land where he can't even go home. Nkrumah is lauded on the global platform while SAS can't even get past this website without being jeered and laughed at.

What I cant understand about some of you Danquasiris is, why you keep on repeating the same rubbish that the CIA scripted for you after their coup in Ghana in 1966? Even primary school-children in Ghana today, know better than this.
In fact, even by pretending that we are unaware that Kwame is the greatest African, anybody with just two pieces of brain matter can make a simple analogy as to whether he was a great man or not.

NOW MY COMMENT:
When people open the door to showcase Nkrumah as the best thing that ever happened to Ghana, it is the right and duty of honest citizens to also showcase every one of his acts to determine whether the truth is being told. In sum, Nkrumah had nothing to his name after over twelve years abroad when he was invited over to join the fight for Ghana's independence. He usurped his employers and established himself as the man of the people seeking freedom for the masses. Soon after his so-called independence, he imposed a dictatorship on the country by his enactment of the PDA, his abolition of opposition, and declaration of one-party state. He abolished judicial independence by dismissing judges and vesting the law in his person. He supplanted the operational command of the army by making himself Supreme Commander. He established a school system in which his ideology and adoration were taught, causing to be burned books he considered inimical to his egocentric policies. He had his effigy on the national currency and his portrait on the streets and his statue in front of parliament house.
He ran a disastrous economic policy wherefore the national resources were freely given away in pursuit of his megalomaniacal agenda to rule the whole of Africa. In the end, he ran a rich nation into bankruptcy and was overthrown in ignominy, dying alone in exile without his family and friends, and betrayed by his most trusted acolytes.
These are the facts of history to be discussed by intelligent minds. If you establish excuses for any of these evil acts, remember that Hitler had excuses; Jim Crow had excuses, Dread Scott judges had excuses, and KKK had excuses..... So, as I have said elsewhere, greatness involves those acts and ideas for which posterity will accept as exemplary models for the guidance of their lives, not hose ignoble acts perpetrated with wild excuses.
And if you list any of the human qualities and attributes for which any great leader must be extolled, Nkrumah had none. He was an extremely wicked man, a brutal dictator and an arrant spendthrift of extraordinary proportions. That is why he can have no legacy to his name.
It is possible to make a prosopographical argument to justify Nkrumah's acts, but such an argument brings him down to the level of a mediocre leader. For greatness belongs to those whose acts are forever noble and forever a model. Perennial concepts go in accord with those we want to emulate, and in Nkrumah's case, we find none to emulate.
Today, his followers may well dissemble his acts and surgically reconstruct his image; but facts are facts. Those insulting me must tell me where I have the facts wrong before they go ahead with their re-interpretation of the facts. They should stop questioning my sanity and throwing around salacious lies....
I have said elsewhere that I don't consider myself better than anybody, and that indeed, I am a mere Kookooase Krakye. But I have achieved whatever I set out to achieve in my life, no matter how modest, and that is how I measure the fulfillment of my dreams. I wanted the highest education that would enable me to analyze things well, to help the needy, and to contribute well to my society. I have done all these, and I don't seek any recognition for anything I do. When I visited Ghana in December of 2013, an old man came to kneel before me and thanked me for financing his son's university education. I lifted him up and slapped him for bringing curses upon my head. I told him to leave and never mention the matter again.
So I don't sit around seeking any praise or recognition for anything I have done in my life; but I can assure everybody that I have never met anybody who has done so much for so many with so little.
Nkrumah had only fifteen years of window of his entire life to do something great; but he became toxic to his friends, to his country and to the whole of Africa and was cast onto the dustbin of history. None of his legacy survives today....The legacy of the true leaders still survives them long after they are gone.
And when I write about these things, I want posterity to understand that I told the truth as it should be told, and that I did not pander to the lies and fiction of those Nkrumaist idol worshippers to whom Nkrumah never dies and does no wrong.

Gosh! Those were apt descriptions! If you found them insulting, then know that you indulge in action that merits those fitting descriptions.
Go read Kuhn and you'd find out that even in academic discourse, such descriptions occur. I've been contemplating writing a Discourse in Academics and as Socio-political Tool for Behavioural Control.
Btw, Nkrumah didn't spend over 20 years abroad before his return. If I were home, I'd have given you the exact years from Marika's book. I think it was 12 or 14 though. I told you Harlley was married to an aunt and some things filtered to me too after the coup. They only claimed they acted in other to halt a "creeping dictatorship", that's, a coming dictatorship, not one which was already in place. The parliamentary hansards scholars like Fitch and Oppenheimer (Ghana: The End of an Illusion)examined did not indicate that Nkrumah was running a dictatorship so how can a kokooase scholar like you expect us to believe your claim?

Brother Yao,
Always happy to read your enlightening views on the world, political science, historiography, literature and history, Brother Andy!
That said, I think it is 12 years (10 years in America/and 2 years in England). Your range is correct, Andy.
Interestingly, Nkrumah's outstanding achievements in these 12 years beat the combined achievements of his Gold Coast peers (and those who came after them)! This is little known!
Marika Sherwood's book is "Kwame Nkrumah: The Years Abroad 1935-1947." I have also asked others to read Marika's book with Carlos Nelson's "Kwame Nkrumah: A Study of his Intellectual Develoopment in the State" and "Olisanwuche Esebede's "Pan-Africanism: The Idea and Movement, 1976-1991."
Dr. Kwame Botwe-Asamoah's book "Kwame Nkrumah's Politico-Cultural Thought and Policies" assemblies a number of the best writings on Nkrumah from around the world in one place.
As well, the new edition of Dr. Botwe-Asamoah's book will feature new material not known to the general public. Unfamiliar readers will be shocked what these writers have to say and reveal about the great Nkrumah.
To make matters short, Marika's well-researched and well-resourced book shows Nkrumah's astoudning accomplishments abroad before relocating in the Gold Coast! The information she reveals are surprising. I know you Andy have given readers bits of these surprising data!
Some of these are little known, such as Nkrumah's setting up influential international institutions, African Srudents Associations (America/Canada), Institute of African Studies and Culture (University of Pennsylvania), lecturing (profesor), setting up journal/newspapers and editing them, writing resolustions (with Du Bois and others) for the UN, chairing/organizing international institutions to free the colonized world (such as his organzing "the first Conference of Africans in America" in 1943), and so many others.
Again, many of these outstanding achievements by Nkrumah abroad are hardly known by those unfamilair with the literature!
And, finally, you are perfectly right with Mary Oppenheimer's and Bob Fitch's book, Nyebro Yao.
Andy, the literature on these questions is vast but time won't allow you and I to exhaust them here. We shall come up with detailed bibiography sometime in the future. We can't even begin to exhaust Nkrumah's achievements on Ghanaweb!
Have a great weekend to you all!

We think there ought to be a difference!
Therefore, your "...If you found them insulting, then know that you indulge in action that merits those fitting descriptions...", ought to apply to the extent Dr. SAS, Attorney at Law licenses himself to "engage in (un)civil debate", as a result.
Further, to assume that all those "samples" were penned by "Nkrumaists", is quite a stretch, to put it mildly.
