Doc, do you have evidence that it was the government that recorded Dr Osafo Marfo? In any case, governments, political parties and politicians across the globe spy on each other. It's done in the west. Countries also spy on each other. Even the US and the UK spy on each other though they are the closest allies in the western alliance or NATO. I am not justifying it, if it was the government that recorded Osafo Marfo.
I have not listened to the tape but from what Dr Osafo Marfo has said in response, it is most likely that he said what has been attributed to him. First, he has not directly denied what he was alleged to have said, except to say that the tape was doctored. If the tape was doctored, why has he failed to tell the public what exactly did he say at the meeting? Again, why is it that none of those who were at the meeting come out to deny or say what exactly Dr Oasfo Marfo said?
Your attempt to either defend or justify what he was alleged to have said as being doctored or blame the government for abusing its authority or violating Dr Osafo Marfo's privacy has failed miserably. The meeting could not be described as private because it was an NPP meeting. At best, it was confidential but never private. Again, it did not take place in a private home but at a hotel. Last but not the least, political parties are regulated under Ghana's Constitution and not a private organisation. So privacy does not apply on this matter.
Second, your example of what you described at Strategic Meeting is pathetic. I have also attended and do attend strategic meetings regularly and discuss confidential matters of risks, including risks to society. Yes, we attempt to reduce or eliminate the risk as much as possible but do not use such divide and rule language to reduce risk. In fact, in some cases where the risk to society is high we make the appropriate authorities and partners aware to also conduct their own independent risk assessment. For example, as a Non-Executive Board member of a county Probation Board, the Board had a duty to inform the police and Social Care Services if someone we access being a risk to society, such as, a sex offender is under supervision in our area within context of the individual's privacy. I really do not get the message you were trying to communicate with your discussion on Strategic Meetings.
What Dr Osafo Marfo's said is indefensible and could not be justified. It should not be defended simply because illegal means were used to record him. It was of public interest and therefore the means could justify the end. The public must know the views of those who seek to lead the country.

I have been itching to have this debate. We condemn people based on our prejudices rather than actual evidence. I would never have set out to write an article on this if I've not heard the tape. Yet you are brazen enough to make categorical statements.
Go talk to your legal friends on this. Any recording of anybody in a closed meeting without his permission is illegal in the UK. Otherwise companies who hold meetings in hotels would be deemed to have waived their rights to privacy.

Why do you think terror suspects at Guantanamo cannot be brought to trial? Whatever incriminating evidence was obtained illegally and hence is not admissible in court. Should NPP go listening in on NDC meetings hoping that some wrong should be said there?
You can only proceed on the overt actions of a group. I don't know where you got your ideas from. In that case why privacy laws in liberal countries?

Journalist and information gatherers especially if it is in the public interest don't make arrests, they put the information in the public domain.
What will make such recording inadmissible in evidence in a court is if the parties to the meeting have not given their consent for the minutes to be made the public.Consent can however be be obtained retrospectively or argued to be within the public’s interest.
As an example, reporters frequently record conversations covertly, but their defence is that the content is in the public’s interest and should be disclosed; in that knowledge of the recording would alter the content of the conversation significantly.
The 2007 case of Amwell View School Governors -v- Dogherty where the Employment Appeal Tribunal had found that a Claimant could not rely on secretly obtained recordings of private deliberations of the school governors who conducted disciplinary hearings, had now given way to the Punjab National Bank (International) Limited -v- Gosain the Employment Appeal Tribunal case where secret recording was found to be admissible.

Those are my grounds for condemning what he was alleged to have said. I need not listen to listen to the doctored tape first. My arguments are logical and reasonable but I respect you right to disagree with me.
In fact, I have a different view on what Dr Osafo Marfo is alleged to have said and I hope to share my views on Ghanaweb when I get time to write an article. Probably, it will be a rejoinder to yours.
Regarding, the illegality of recording of private conversation without permission, even in the UK, if the public interest test is met, it is not illegal. In other words, the end could justify the means. Privacy would not cover a discussion to commit a crime even if that discussion was in one's private bedroom with his wife. If that is recorded by illegal means and made public, the public interest would outweigh the right to privacy of the individual.

First, there is no evidence that a rival political party secretly recorded Osafo Marfo's cowardly sermon to his party. For you to present this as fact and then proceed to wax defensively on that basis is the mark of clever-by-half idiot.
Second, although Osafo Marfo has a right to preach his nation destabilizing sermon to his party, the average Ghanaian patriot also has a right to condemn those statements which they interpret as highly prejudicial to national development and unbecoming of a former Minister of Finance. That's the beauty of democracy; Marfo has a right to speak his mind, as misguided as it is, and we have a right to let him know what a dangerous destabilizing individual he is.
Third, Osafo Marfo himself has realized what a bonehead he's for advocating the balkanization of Ghana based on some outmoded and nebulous concept of 'resources', tothe extent that he has vehemently denied ever expressing the views being attributed to him. If he himself is too cowardly to stand behind his views publicly, why should we entertain a defence of those views from the likes of you? For us to take you seriously, you would do well to convince Osafo Marfo to publicly own up to his views so that we can all have a full scale discussion of what constitutes, whether persons born and bred in regions with those resources must possess superior rights to Ghanaian citizenship, whether future discoveries of new resources elsewhere would reverse such rights resource and grant higher rights to the citizens of these new resource regions, etc. I hope you see where this argument is heading to. It's utterly unconscionably stupid seek in today's day and age to enfranchise and disenfranchise persons based on some archaic concept of what a resource is.
Lastly, persons like you and Osafo Marfo, clearly have little role to play in forging a united and cohesive nation called Ghana. Your views are at best primitive and at worst destabilizing to a young nation as Ghana.

In a speech in which there is no mention of tribe, elections, voting, president but only asking that people ought to have a say in the management of their resources, what is so disturbing about that?
Even the very newspapers who broke the story are drawing back from their initial claims. Instead of saying it was an ethnocentric sppech, they are now qualifying with 'which some say is ethnocentric'.
Please listen to the tape if you have not. Asking to have a say in managing resources is not an unreasonable demand. It does not mean being president - it means consultation.
I believe you are an intellectual, let us cut out the emotions and let us have a proper debate. If you are convincing, I have no problem ceding to you.

"Someone said vote for me for I am one of yours. If they want your votes, let them make xxxx their flagbearer." Well, my friend, he said it in public whilst cameras rolling, portable audio of individual and microphone tv stations are all over. Now, the year was 2012 and he Mahama was on his campaign trip in the northern part of our country. So, please don't mix apples and oranges here.
Below is what he said;
President John Mahama is appealing to Northerners not to let this golden opportunity of having one of their own as President of Ghana, slip through their hands.
The president said it was time for Northerners to also be at the forefront in running the affairs of the country.
Addressing the chiefs and people of Nankpanduri as part of his campaign tour of the Northern Region, President John Mahama called on all Northerners to give their backing to him so he can ascend the seat and make them proud.
According to him, they have been Vice Presidents for a long time adding that, they also have the people and what it takes to be President.
President John Mahama promised not to disappoint if he gets their backing.
He appealed to them to make his administration less burdened by embracing peace in all their doings.
The above rhetoric sounded to me like a determined voice telling his folks that they are equally capable of occupying the seat of the presidency to also prove their worth to Ghanaians. A far cry from behind some closed doors ethnocentric and treasonable speech with that of Osafo Maafo you are trying desperately hard and with all your academic-might to defend here.

I am extremely happy that at least some Akans are prepared to stick up for themselves and defend Osafo Marfo.
In Ghana today, it seems, you can say anything and get away with it provided you are not Akan.
Akans have now effectively been gagged.
Rawlings repeatedly says he is Ewe and calls the Ewes "my people". Kofi Awoonor said he is Ewe first and Ghanaian second. He became Chairman Of the Council of State.
John Maama said he is a northerner and that the northerners must vote for him.
Akufo-Addo said "Yen Akanfuo" and all hell broke loose.
90% of the presidential staffers are Northerners.
Northerners constitute 60% of the Cabinet.
Osafo Marfo is right to call for regional balance and that is a just and equitable demand.
While the 5 regions cited by Osafo Marfo may be predominantly Akan regions, they are by no means inhabited by only Akans. There are significant Ewe and other minorities who will equally benefit from a fairer distribution of resources.
In the run up to the 2008 elections, Kwahus, Brongs and Ashantes were being chased out of voter registration centres in Accra. The masterminds of this act of ethnic cleansing were Nii Lante Vanderpuije and Nii Armah Ashiety, both of them NDC MPS in the "United Ghana".

The NDC (New Destination for Criminals) that rose from the ashes of the infamous Rawlings revolution to metamorphose into the party it is today is at it again. It has managed to survive as a political party because its rank and file is dominated by copiously malicious, cynical, devious, vicious and deviant characters who are adept in the use of under-hand stratagem to coral political power. I call them "reluctant democrats" because democracy was not a choice but an imposition on "Jihadi" John Rawlings, its founder. They play hard and dirty because the so-called social democrats don't believe democracy can be honest and efficient.
The John Mahama NDC administration knows without any shadow of doubt that the 2016 presidential election is theirs to lose so they have embarked on an early campaign format of reverse psychology with NDC sponsored anti-Akan, anti-NPP bigotry.
If the NDC administration was a responsible government vested in advocacy for national unity it will not hide behind CODEC to demonstrate but will rather hasten to seek the services of a Voice Recognition Expert or Audio Forensic Expert to analyze the so-called Osafo Maafo audio recording for authentication, clarification and voice identification in both digital and analogue formats.
The new tool in NDC political weaponry is doctored tapes. Their snoopy operatives infiltrate the meetings of their political rivals to secretly record their opponents meetings and later use the doctored tape as a political red herring. This is unethical and a violation of the rights of political parties to operate freely and ought to be condemned by all patriotic citizens because the stability of the nation is always endangered by such churlish political chicanery and buffoonery.

Dr Ohemeng,
That is an interesting academic analysis on the Osafo Maafo's tape. The loaded question, however, is why did he say 'you can't say these things openly, but we can talk among ourselves?' Were the people of Western Region secretive about their demands?
You are also right when you say there is nothing wrong in proposing that those who bear the brunt of galamsey more should have a say in using the resources to mitigate its effects, but why does it have to be secret. If there are no other motives but a genuine concern, why can't it be said publicly? Therein lies the difficulty in rationalising Mr Osafo Maafo's tape.

What is IMPLIED is what I wrote. It is not a verbatim reproduction and I thought you could get that. Those tribes I listed have no natural resources of any significance..
This is how prejudice works.
Yes Ghana must rise again but surely not when these thieves are in charge of affairs. That Mahama is filthy corrupt and a hypocrite par excellent. I would rather trust Lucifer than Mahama. He's very dangerous.
Where is the evidence the NDC is behind the leak? Cheap diverisonary tactics.
Andy-K
You hardly comment when Ewes and NDC do bad things, but you are here like a housefly on sh.. whenever opportunities arise to attack Akans and NPP!
dont mind that fool ,we all know the purpose of this attempt of the ndc homogenize and to close in their ranks on the usual anti Akan ticket whilst playing divide and rule tactics among the Akans .
Forget about this tribal bigot called Andy-K. He jumps in to defend his people at the least opportunity but will keep quiet when his people make unwarranted statements against Akans.
He has done this for well over 10 years ...

Yes, Akans are sitting idle while others practice tribalism!
First, there is no evidence that a rival political party secretly recorded Osafo Marfo's cowardly sermon to his party. For you to present this as fact and then proceed to wax defensively on that basis is the mark of clever-by ...

The fact is, it was a plan orchestrated by some Ewe's to demonise the Akan's, pure and simple. their next move is to court some other Akan tribes by producing a tape which will insult them. And the voice on the tape will be e ...

Hahaha, "clever-by-half idiot." I like that.
There is no need to be going round the issue. If the tape was doctored, why can't osafo marfo produce the original tape? Dr. you agreed the meeting took place I was expecting you talk to mr. marfo and let him produce the ori ...

You are sick in the head and need help urgently.
Akans unite against these faggots who are feeding fat on your disunity.
The writer has no sense. Listen to his trash! Osafo Marfo's tribal bigotory is less harmful than government trying to secreetly tape people. You are a useless stupid idiot. Talk about the rubbish Osafo Marfo has said and leav ...

Show the evidence the Govt did this before jumping to your conclusion. Else i would start wondering which institution would give a PhD to such a person with so poor analytical skills
Agbenyo boasted that they have the capacity to record every NPP meeting. He even extended that to what happens in Akufo Addo's bedroom. Ask him why this claim if the government is not sponsoring these. Where the Agbenyo work? ...

Dr come again, "they have the capacity" and indicating "what happens in Akuffo Addo's bedroom" don't amount to admission they did this. If I had any doubt of your analytical kills that doubt is now removed
I am extremely happy that at least some Akans are prepared to stick up for themselves and defend Osafo Marfo.
In Ghana today, it seems, you can say anything and get away with it provided you are not Akan.
Akans have no ...
