Since schools were founded for religious instruction, on what grounds do you propose confiscation?
Moreover, morning devotions form part of religious instruction, and the best thing is to accommodate all religions during morning devotions, traditional religions included. If that means utilizing classrooms for morning devotions, so be it.

Then advice the government to stop the Makaranta form of education since it is a breeding ground for raising terrorists. Why do you envy Christians. Is it because they have chosen to invest in formal education and Muslims have rather chosen to invest heavily in tourism to Mecca? Stop the nonsense. This is the attitude that collapsed secondary education in Nigeria. In Nigeria today good secondary schools are found in Christian dominated states like Kwara,Plateau, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti,Lagos, etc. Any other good school you see is either owned by religious bodies or private individuals. This came about due to this same agitations about Muslim rights in missionary schools which forced some state governors to confiscate all missionary schools within their domains and renamed them after Muslim leaders. Today those schools are pale shadows of themselves.

This is a very nice piece but I think it is not all that easy as the writer has said. It is easier said than done. This is not a new issue. It has been there for years. The only reasons why it is now rearing its ugly head is the fact that muslim parents are now seeking better education for their children than before, and certain people are trying to intepret the Koran in their own understanding. I went to school in the north and those days,it was optional.Either you send your children to mission schools to mix with other faiths to have a better education or you send them to the Local Authority schools. Because of fears of being converted to christianity, many muslim parents do not allow their children to attend mission schools, which to some extend have a negative results on educations in the north. Today, the situation is different and many muslim parents are sending their wards to mission school. Does that means such mission schools should go contrary to their rules and regulations in order to accommodate our muslim brothers and sisters? That is where the problem lies and that is what needs to be addressed. In those day, skiping church services on sundays in mission schools is punishable offence. By the way, what makes one a muslim? Is it by going to sit down among christians for such a period of time that makes one a christian? We had lots of muslims among us in school and nothing of the sort happened. Why is it happening now? Because somebody out there is trying to fan religious problems in this country. Somebody is taking orders from some fanatic Arab nations to sow a seed of disunity among us. I can bet that most of these so called sheiks who are doing this are foreigners who are trying to import into this country their brand of Islam, and we must not allow it to happen.Ghana is a multiculture nations and must remain as such. Like the writer said, I think we should better think of giving quality educations to these guys rather than talking about joint devotions and who should not be present. The other day, it was the WAEC whose orders a so called sheik said he will resist with violence. The choice is theirs since I don't see the missions schools changing their rules and regualations. Let us try to do away with these petty petty things.

I attended a secondary school in which such services in the morning were replaced by moral lessons in individual classes. Topics are chosen daily which we discussed with class teachers before lessons. Then, on Sunday there was vespers but that was made optional until it was found out that some very few students were using that period to meet their girlfriends in the empty classrooms for amorous purposes, even it was only necking, kissing and "finger-le-hanya".:-) Even then Muslims were not forced to attend.
Then I went to Sixth form at Mawuli School where daily morning devotion are held. Mawuli started as a mission school but is now govt assisted. Some of us were not attending and one day there was a roll call and caning of those absent. I was one of a few students who refused to go to be caned. I was ready to raise hell and refuse to go home even if dismissed. Luckily for the school authorities, there was student unrest the following weekend after we returned from the school farm to see that the "red-red" was undersized. I was one of the students who did the inspection in the kitchen that day. Actually, the "borbor" was looking small 'cos it wasn't very watery as on normal days. Anyway, the subsequent investigations into the disturbance linked it to the caning and the school authorities were condemned. That was the end of any idea of caning or punishing unbelievers like myself.
In the 90s I wrote a lot on Okyeame against forcing people to stand up to pray even in our hospitals, irrespective of their religious beliefs. I heard from some guys at Cape Vars that cos of that they stopped attending the Univ. clinic and
used to attend private clinic and bring the bill to their Dept., actually, Centre for Devt Studies or so. One Dr Brown was the head then.

Ghanaians should be careful about this trend of copying the western nations' way of life. Our faith is a huge part of who we are and it resonates for the most part in how we live and our survival in this tumultuous world. What has the separation of church and state done for the US and other civilized nations? It has bred and continue to breed immorality , lack of integrity, greed and violence among people. Don't let Ghanaians get so caught up in trying to be politically correct that we overlook common sense. We should strive to resolve the friction between Muslims and Christians regarding devotion in schools, but by no means should we isolate our faith from our educational institutions. Our children need good education grounded in good moral beliefs.

Let's be serious here; which of these morning devotions preach or attack other faiths? Its a morning assembly where religious prayers are said, the national anthem and pledge sung and general school announcements made. This is what constitutes the morning assembly which you call devotion just to suit your agenda. It is a school regulation meant at maintaining discipline in our schools. I have been there before and can tell you that those who flouted this regulation were often Christians. The Muslim students had a greater sense of discipline than the Christians. So many things happen in our second cycle schools we are not aware of: occultic practices and alien religious acts like Rastafarianism are beginning to gain grounds. It will not take christian morning devotions nor Muslim Congregational prayers to check these creeping practices. It takes discipline and allowing school rules to rule. Bet you other religious groups in the country will follow the footsteps of GMSA should their petition see the light of day.
