Francis,
You could have improved the delivery of your article by avoiding several themes at once in such a short article. You talked about:
1) Koi and Zoe meeting in the U.K. (the main theme in the article);
2) Ghanaian culture (the dishes, music, Anlo dances (although the name "Koi" sounds Ga than Anlo));
3) Poor police service throughout the country;
4) The looting brigade (also known as politicians).
There is nothing wrong with mentioning all of these themes, but in such a short article, it became difficult to feel the flow of an otherwise beautiful piece.
So, what happened afterward? Did they get married? Did he return to the U.K. with her? Did she adopt Ghana as her new home?
Too many gaps in an otherwise nice piece.

Hey Francis, thank you for using Zoe's experience to tell the Ghana story. You see, a lot of Ghanaians don't have the brains or the mental acuity for discernment and for you to make these comments invariable tell me there is hope for my motherland. This is what you wrote:
"After having adequate tour of the city of Accra, Zoe decided to explore Ghana. Apart from visiting her in-laws in the village her next point of call was Cape Coast. She visited the slave dungeons, transit points for our ill-fated ancestors. Out of greed and sheer wickedness we sold our valiant folks into slavery and left behind the imbeciles to plough the land. Cutting down the rainforest for farm produce is not a feat for frail men so we can hardly feed our famished selves.
We mortgaged our folks with high IQs to the Americas. Our Astronauts, Scientists, Inventors, Engineers etc were exchanged for dressing mirrors, kegs of gun powder and packets of sardine. We were left with imbeciles who begat more imbeciles. So in the 21st century we still use sticks to cultivate the land and use the same to harvest our cocoa. We pound fufu with wood and stick instead of portable robotic machines".
I have been saying this for years. Of all the races in the world, it is only the African race that fought among themselves, captured their own people, and sold them for useless things like mirrors, rum, gun powder and stuff. And we are still doing it.
Between 1983 and 1997, during the divestiture program, JJ Rawlings and his NDC gangs sold Ghana's state-owned enterprises exclusively to foreigners after they had devalued the cedi to the lowest denomination. Now the people you find in Ghana's corporate board rooms are Lebanese, Syrians, Indians, some French and other nationalities. The only Ghanaians who got a piece of the pie are NDC card holders;those of other party affiliations were cut out.
Fast forward to 2003. JA Kufuor and his gang of thieves painfully sold Ghana's marquee heirloom, the Ashanti Gold Fields Ltd. to Anglogold, a British company domiciled in South Africa, and JA Kufuor went on to have a lavish dinner at Buckingham Place with the Queen. We in Ghana lost one of the finest gold mines in the world after South Africa all because of one greedy person, JA Kufuor.
The black man has not changed; he is as evil as before. The only value he has is himself. He is selfish, narcissistic and perfidious. I am so glad to read your article - it gives me hope!

Yes, Sam Jonah's reckless hedging strategy was a factor for the sale, but that is not all. You see Ashanti Goldfields was sited on one of the world's major gold deposits and was one of the ten largest in the world when Kufuor sold it to Anglogold. It was also Ghana's largest foreign exchange earner, and traded in New York and London stock Exchanges, not a small feat for an African company.
One thing Ghanaians do not know is that Ashanti Goldfields Ltd. (Ashanti) has gone through turbulent times in its history dating back to the 1800s. As recent as 1985 Rawlings and his PNDC military government had to approach the IMF for $111 million loan to bail Ashanti out. PNDC decree that was passed in the same year ensured that 45 percent of Ashanti's export earnings was kept in Ghana. It was Rawlings who appointed a Ghanaian, Sam Jonah, in 1986 to head the company - thus Ashanti's first Ghanaian CEO. To the credit of Sam Jonah, more Ghanaian line workers were hired, wages for mine workers were raised. During this time loans from International Finance Corporation (IFC) helped Ashanti to expand to other African countries as production increased by 25% - unprecedented in Ashanti's history.
The point I am making is this; with Ashanti as the highest foreign exchange earner for our country coupled with providing employment for a large section of the Ghanaian population, did Kufuor and his NPP government make any effort to salvage Ashanti?
As far back as 1966 when Ashanti's fortunes were at its worst, the military government, National Liberation Council, ordered search for new investors for the company. What effort did Kufuor and NPP make? He was only glad to sell Ashanti for self gratification that ended him and his wife at Buckingham Palace.
Kufuor could have found investors to bail out Ashanti if he had tried, because gold prices were on the upswing. Instead of bowing his head in shame for bring down Ghana's marquee heirloom, Sam Jonah went on to be knighted by the British for his part for giving the British the golden handshake.

I had also advocated for the prosecution of Sam Jonah for sinking Ashanti. Sam Jonah had no clue about derivatives yet he masterminded a catastrophic hedge program never seen in the corporate world, it makes ENRON looks like a child's play. What he did is rogue trading. Why is Sam Jonah walking free if Tsatsu Tsikata was on trial for causing financial loss?
Now here is my point, at the time of the derivative debacle, Ashanti had reserves of 23 million ounces, which put Ashanti in the negative value of $450 million on its derivative hedge book. If Kufuor could raise $750 million sovereign bond in capital markets, what prevented him to seek a loan to bail out a world class company like Ashanti? Ashanti had 23 million gold reserves at the time for christsake. All the past governments - Nkrumah, NLC, and PNDC rose to the occasion to do what was necessary to keep this precious jewel from falling into the hands of the west because there were take-over bids all through the 70s and the 80s.
But the real damage Kufuor inflicted on the country is contained in the purchase agreement his government and Anglogold signed. Apart from the tax holidays he gave Anglogold for 15 years, the agreement also allows Anglogold to lease the rich Ghana lands in gold for 55 years. Do you know what that means? It means Kufuor and his NPP goverment have literally given away Ghana's precious assets (glittering gold) for a mere $1.4 billion - assets the previous governments have fought very hard to keep. You and I will be dead and gone, and our children's children would never benefit from the enormous gift the people of Ghana are endowed with.
Look for the purchase agreement on the web and read it for yourself and if you do not shed tears, then there must be something wrong with you. You don't get invitation to Buckingham Palace to dine with the Queen for nothing.
Time will not permit me to tell you all about the damage Kufuor and his NPP have done to the country. They also sold Ghana Telecom and Ghana Airway, but these two do not compare with the real damage they have done to our people.

Kwabena,
Thanks for your comments on the sale of Ashanti Gold. It is a pity most so-called educated Ghanaians have no clue what harm Sam Jonah and then Kuffuor caused Ghanaians and the future generation. Tsatsu's derivative trading and the Societe Generale loan he guaranteed paled into insignificance compared to what Sam Jonah did and profited from it personally whereas didn't personally.
But a similar hideous sale out of our natural resource is happening right now, in the oil and gas industry. Nobody except my brother and GIGS seems to be raising their voices in opposition.

1. It is hardly true that the lady was meant by an Anlo group dancing the "kete dance". The kete dance, I can say on authority, is a royal dance originally performed and danced to by royals and elders. Source? Hmmm! One of the cultural emblems the Asantes bequeathed to their Anlo allies in time passed, in exchange, for instance, for being taught to weave "kente". Not even an Anlo royal will go to KIA with a kete dancing entourage. I even wonder if the dance is done any more, as it was something for old men way back in the 60s when I last witnessed a performance. Anyway, how come a person by name Koi is meeting his lover with an Anlo kete troupe? Or his obviously non-Ewe nickname?
2. Then this heap of nonsense.
We pound fufu with wood and stick instead of portable robotic machines."
It is the kind of nonsense bandied about some seeking Reparations from the whites for the Slave Trade? Does it mean the weak people with low IQs captured the strong people with high IQs and sold them into slavery? just think about it!
Hardly what happened historically! Obviously, the writer and most people are not aware that the Gold Coast was an importer of slaves until the rise of Asante in 1700 turned it into a net exporter. Lovejoy and others had argued how the forest areas couldn't have been settled and the large Akan kingdoms which arose in the forest belt couldn't have arisen without the labour of those slaves supplied mainly by the Portuguese as far as from the Congo! They also panned for the gold dusts and nuggets. And slave labour produced food aplenty and no one was famished.
In fact, slave labour helped to start the palm plantations and the cocoa farms! Well, international bodies are still trying to stop child slave labour on the cocoa farms in Ghana and Ivory Coast! Anybody who watches CNN should know about that. In any case, Africa was a net exporter of food well into the 1960s.
Btw, I come from the Upper Slave Coast, as the Anlo area of the Slave Coast was known. Anlos never sold their own people into slavery except wicked kidnappers who didn't differentiate. We must also allow for the exception of Fiayidzehe, who was deposed and a botched attempt made to execute him for conspiring to secretly sell some girls sent for initiation into the Nyigbla fetish.
My ancestors were not imbeciles and they did not give birth to imbeciles. We cannot even say that for the tribal groups from among whom the slaves were got. We need a better explanation for the failure of the wannabe leaders who took over from colonialists and the native authorities that led to the phenomenal growth of Ghana up to the '50s.
