Single mothers who put in all efforts to provide for their children really deserve some praise. I personally think they are the true marriage materials who would not only want to depend on men to take care of their children. With this said, I passionately hate women who have children and refuse to work, blaming men for the failure of their children succeeding. At least try and fail than not try at all. Good job though, Bernice.

Bernice,
I'm not sure why but every article I read from you seems to have a grip on me because it reminds me of home.
I like reading your thoughts on social issues. Maybe it's because your approach is very simplistic but yet very powerful in capturing the essence of what you are trying to put across.
Motherhood by Ghanaian or African standard, can be a daunting task even in a two-parent household for the simple reason that fathers by tradition, had thought mothers should carry the lion's share of the workload in raising kids. Luckily, that perception is changing with more education on that parts of both parties.
These days, we can see fathers taking over their fair share of this 'load'.
Single motherhood whether by choice or accident can be even more daunting if not downright scary.
Even those who prepare themselves and do it by choice still face some challenges because of societal norms and expectations which are more prevalent in the less advanced world.
I know these mothers deserve a lot of credit but another group of mothers who deserve an equal credit are the mothers of these single mothers. In other words, the grandmothers in the the background who help in no small way in raising the children.
I know this to be very true in the African/black society.
One other point, I will like to bring up is birth control especially, for the teenage girls in our society who could find themsleves pregnant without the proper preparation for motherhood.
In this way, some of the "accidental" single motherhood and their inherent hardships can be avoided.
In closing, I think motherhood in general should be celebrated because in the eyes of all of us, our mothers are simply, gems.
A good piece as usual, Bernice!!
