However, I agree with you. The author of this article should not be assessing any Professors. He's not qualified to do so. He writes very poor English.

Your English is too bad for a graduate student. What University awarded your first degree? Masters and PhD students do not write dissertations but rather theses.

theres similar practice in the UK where you are wrting from. some students never meet their supervisors, the only difference is that they will mark it on time foryou to graduate

Look, as far as I am aware, graduate students, have a voice in selecting a supervisor, who then becomes a buddy of sort. depending on the instructor you choose to work with, and the reputation or profile he or she has built in and out of academic circles, you may be a source of help to them,in the numerous projects they are working on. Additionally, you may be their T/A,helping the with their mundane work at the faculty involving undergrads. Thus the relationship is a symbiotic one, where you help each other. I am aware of situations where brilliant and hardworking candidates have taught courses on their own with very little input from the faculty member!
The Ghanaian situation may be markedly different because of the lack of research grants, and many of these faculty members, generally speaking, prefer to keep all the 'work' to themselves. There is also the tendency for Ghanaian faculty to view the pursuit of higher academic scholarship as an individual affair;where the general thinking appears to that,if you want to join the 'club',then you are basically on your own!
The question about these instructors not having time to mark papers is obvious. When you have Dept Heads and ordinary faculty members constantly on the airwaves, proffering all sorts of opinions about any issue under the sun, then it stands to reason that these folks will not have the time to deal with matters they are supposed to attend to; it is that simple, but shameful,on the part of individuals, who spend most of their time lambasting others for not being priority-focused!
My personal suggestion is for serious and dedicated candidates to read widely, and to seek help from outside sources, such as alumina, and former Profs or colleagues outside the confines of the university itself.

It is the usual old selfishness on the parts of the Ghanaian lecturers. One will never hear or see this in any University in the US.

Subject area also compounds such situations and choice of supervisors.
Even now most masters thesis are irrelevant to some universities due to the share volumes received thus aside the experience most universities do not consider the merit .
Most phd papers have began to receive less attention as such. Even some Journals and publishing outlets will receive but will refuse to give recognition due to repetitions and contents.
Look today many hold phd's etc from some institutions that will not worth a masters from other institutions.
We need to re orient our perception of academic degrees in totality.

Even though the writer may not have a good command of the English language and his grammar is bad he has made a valid point.

It seems to me failures in Ghana has linkages to our brothers, sisters and kinfolks from the Diaspora. It does not take a classroom educated Ghanaian, in Ghana or in the Diaspora, to know that majority of the lecturers in Ghana's universities and colleges hold degrees and credentials from outside Ghana; and not from the continent of Africa but from God-knows where around the globe. There are those who love to sign their names with their credentials in bold face lettering so the world would know of their post graduate accomplishments.
And if these formerly educated Ghanaians from the Diaspora are the lecturers of choice in our schools, government and private offices across Ghana then why is the blame of inferior instructional materials, inadequate graduation rates and semi-illiterate and non-functional graduates from our schools not a problem for those who hold all those credentials from afar?
The hidden truth about a mess of an education system we have is this: majority of our educated folks attained their advanced degrees writing thesis and dissertations that they cannot reproduce or apply in Ghana for a variety of reasons. Look here folks, apart from true scientific theories that will hold up almost everywhere as long as temperature conditions are optimal, most of the papers written in productive and contributive subjects will fail in Ghana because all that is true about systems in developed nations that make theories hold true are nonexistent in Ghana; these are facts not fiction. So what is it these highly paid empty suites bring to the table for our students knowing they’ve got theirs and could give a darn about a meaningless credential they offer their poor students? After all they can brag about a superior education they’ve got while they thump their nose at those they offer to Ghanaians in Ghana.
