Isaac Your piece epitomizes why our journalist will always fall into trouble. 'they have rights, they should be protected..' I agree with the disquiet about assault which to all persons is outright wrong. Journalist should exhibit cultural sensitivity and use their wits rather than their new found power to be intimidating, confrontational and sometimes out and out rudeness, especially to public officers. As in the case of the Gyans, the recipient may not react but their apologist may. when in the line of duty you get bruised or you bones get broken there will be outward support but you nurse your own wounds so use methods that will aid achieve same results with dignity even to a suspect. Isaac the office has denied the accusation of direct attack by its staff, please let us respect that too, after all these are also Ghanaians who must be protected. On the streets in Ghana may do not care what has happened to Afia, rather people are talking about style and approach. Those who train our journalist must teach them about Ghana and the way it works. Importing non-Ghanaian approaches may destroy the relationship between the media and the populace it seeks to inform and entertain. the rule is simple if you demand respect and you have power act respectfully because power cannot be perpetual, respect will be.

Ghanaian men has not come to terms with the reality that women are equal to men. They find it difficult to accept the authority of women.

The problem is that Ghanaian men are used to docile women and can't take it that a woman is being assertive. If Afia would have been a man, you would have called him a strong personality. Afia is not different from CAPTAIN SMART.

A harsh punishment...a prison term, or a fine or both..... will undoubtedly serve notice to those who deem it fit and justifiable to pummel "unprofessional reporters."
Of course, the preponderance of news outlets these days has inevitably improved our democracy but has also brought in its wake reporters who see sleazy and sensational reporting as the only path to fame and riches. That said, they are to be protected at all cost no matter the level of provocation...
When I worked a reporter almost a decade ago in New Jersey, there was a particular gentleman who did not like my coverage of his neighborhood and he made that abundantly clear one night at a city council meeting where he yelled,"Why don't you write something?" That was all he could do....scream...he dared not to touch me physically because the law would have hammered him hard and I would have sued his ass ...I was not alarmed by his temper-tantrum and covered the meeting as if nothing had occurred....of course, I immediately alerted the police and my editor who both assured me that he was only hyperventilating....
Ghanaians should learn to tolerate reporters who pushed a little harder to get to the bottom of a news story...that is the nature of the business which has increasingly become competitive....assaulting them is an attack on democracy....period.

The balance of equity should provide common sense approach to this issue. The office says the reportage is not true. The public good is that these persons should be allowed to serve the needy until a formal is proffered.

As much as it is wrong to beat Journalists, they should also learn to respect the citizenry. They should not hide behind press freedom and always insult people old enough to be their parents.
