One doesn't need to go to the market to know the price hike in the system. The 20 to 30% increments in fuel prices and other utility services, coupled with the over 30% depreciation of the cedi against the dollar just this year is way enough to predict the inflation rate, vis-a - vis the enormity and the quantum effect of the suffering of the poor masses. Mahama can bribe Nii Moi, Kwame Pianim, the Statistical Service and Bank of Ghana to cook up and massage figures, our market women, the Kenkey and fish sellers, will expose him. Dishonorable deceivers and GREEDY monsters.

Dr Nii Moi Thompson is trying hard to retain water in a basket and he is really strugglig here.
If one has to go into the components of inflation to find the full effects of price changes, then it is quite clear that the weightings assigned to the components are distorting the effects.
The CPI rate of inflation is based on a sample of prices of a sample goods in a sample of markets. To compute the headline figure, weightings are applied to the price changes. These weightings are meant to reflect the proportion of household income spent on these goods. If the weights are not reflective of people's spending patterns, there is disparity between actual experience and statiscally computed figures.
The GSS collects price quotations on 260 goods and services in 40 markets (average of 4 per region). Is this adequate to capture price changes all over Ghana? By the way are the 40 markets representative of the markets the average household use? The weight assigned to the 'Food group' is way too high, and especially that assigned to vegetables of 12.5%. In the latest newsletter, vegetable prices (including tuber vegetables)are judged to have fallen by 25%. Because this accounts for 1/8th of headline inflation, -25% weighed the headline inflation down.
Dr Thompson should know that when banks are setting interest rates and workers are agitating for wage increases, they do not look at component inflation. They look at headline inflation - that is why it matters that the sample is large, the coverage of goods and services is large and the weightings reflect reality.
On depreciation of the Cedi, he is trying to be clever by using reciprocals. If I had GHS100 at the beginning of the year, which was equivalent to $45.00, how much will I get for the same in August? This, to me is of more practical importance than an academically computed rate of depreciation. I would be receiving $26.00. The percentage drop is my 'practical' depreciation. As someone said whether depreciation or appreciation, the value is the same!

Dr. Thompson just takes the CPI produced by the GSS, which is a sample of goods, the related prices, and the assigned weights used by GSS to confirm the inflation figures. He proceeds to want us believe that the sample, prices and weights applied by GSS in their calculation of the CPI are correct. But Dr. Bawumiah's assertions are hitting at the core of the variables GSS used to calculate the inflation.
He is truly disingenuous and I really want Dr. Bawumiah to come down hard at him. He seems ignorant and his long rumblings did not even address the question.

Dr. Moi:
Your response to Bawumia is too infantile. Why can't Bawumia use the 2.2 from Bank of Ghana if it is accurate and reject the 3.03 from the same Bank? Bawumia argues that the Bank of Ghana averages rates to arrive at its quote. If the 2.2 is the correct average and the 3.03 is the wrong average, he has a duty to point that out, as he has.
The distinction between appreciation and depreciation is correct but one does not need reciprocals to prove this trivial point. The depreciation rate is ((3.035 - 2.1628)/3.035). I do not know why we are celebrating a cedi depreciation of 28.7%. The real issue is that the 3.035 is a phanthom number.
Dr. Moi should focus on figuring out how to arrest the depreciation of the cedi and leave this childish arithmetic matters to economics sophomores.
Bawumia is correct in his observation that the Bank of Ghana rates do not reflect the average of other easily observable rates, which is what the Bank's quote should be! We can all observe the complete disconnect between the Bank og Ghana rate and those quoted by other banks, which reflect the market exchange rate.

The BoG's rate should be the average REAL interbank rate and currently it is hoovering around GHS 3.84 TO 1 USD. Wow!
For the inflation, Dr. Thompson just takes the CPI produced by the GSS, which is a sample of goods, the related prices, and the assigned weights used by GSS to confirm the inflation figures. He proceeds to want us believe that the sample, prices and weights applied by GSS in their calculation of the CPI are correct.
