Much as I don't subscribe to witch hunting, as a Christian I believe witches/wizards do exist. My bible tells me so, but I also believe that if I follow my God faithfully and observe His commands, witches, demons, and even satan himself don't have power over me.
I agree with you that the abuse and or torture or even mudering the so-called witches are babaric and must not be tolerated. However, I also see that you want to analyse spiritual matters scientifically; and if we can't prove that witches exist and can cause problems then the believe is irrational. If you approach spiritual matters this way you'll also be wrong.
Whether you like it or not you also have a belief which can't be substantiated or verified, and your belief is that witches don't exist. Can you scientifically prove that they don't exist? No. First of all you don't believe they exist so how are you going to approach the investigation? That's the problem. If we don't believe in something it does not necessarily mean they don't exist. It may mean that our understanding/knowledge is too weak or shallow to comprehend the issue.

Do you believe just because a book says so? What about other books that disagree? Is not being able to disprove things a good reason for believing in them?
The crucial issue is one of evidence. Is there evidence to warrant such a belief, can this evidence withstand scrutiny and can this evidence be tested?

That's the point. Because the belief can't be subjected to scientific test it's hard to say it's not true or not. For example, there's no way a scientist can prove or disprove the existence of God. It's a matter of belief or ... read full comment

To my other colleague, I said I'm a christian that's why I believe what the Bible says, so I again it's a matter of belief. You may have a PhD in 'Scientific Research', there's no way you can disprove the existence of withcraft. We all agree that witch hunting and superstition are backward and hinder progress, but this doesn't necessarily negate the existence of withcraft. Good day.

I agree with you Sam that's beliefs can't be tested. For example, there's no test to determine my belief that milk chocolate is better than white chocolate. However, in the case of witchcraft, we are supposed to believe in demonstrable 'evidence' which is observable. The claim is that there's cause and effect, between mumbling some words or making a concoction that has a real effect on the natural world. It is this that can be tested & so far there is no evidence.

Just hang on there. You'd get reinforcement sooner than you expect.
