It is okay if you have a preference for traditional marriage but you shouldn't insult others by saying that their ceremonies "fulfil the so-called 'civilisation mission' of our colonial masters." That's statement is very disrespectful and downright hurtful.
Secondly, you complain about the cost of having three weddings to support your claim that the traditional ceremony is better. This doesn't make any sense, since the traditional ceremony is the most expensive of the three. The court ceremony is the cheapest as it is only made up of the court fee, the western type you rail against is just a longer church service with decorations. But the traditional one with its unlimited food, endless drinks, Schnapps, the many payments to various members both families, etc easily takes up the majority of the overall budget. In my experience (and I have been part of many weddings), it is the traditional one that becomes the talk of the town. If you truly cared about cost, you would be advocating a court wedding.
I want you to understand that I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you. I'm just pointing out that you don't make a very good argument.

He is stating that the traditional marriage is what defines our identity. Can you be a Jew without a bar/bat mitzvah? Can you be a Catholic without confirmation? It is true that other cultures have been introduced into our societies, and adopting these cultures and ignoring ours serves to annihilate our identity and makes us animals as some would like to believe. By the way, sometimes the changes are more subtle, like wearing Nigerian garbs instead of Kente on one's wedding day.
I have other things to you who call yourself an atheist. It looks like you have already been brainwashed.

Also are you implying that I have been brainwashed because I am an Atheist? So you (I'm guessing you're Christian or Muslem) who believes in fairy tales introduced as a tool by fellow men to keep populations under control are rather calling me brainwashed? Wow!
I would also like to see the other things you have to me who calls myself an Atheist.

Your acticle is very true but you missed the point why people have taken to the christian or church wedding. It has become popular because the marriage certifate is the only document that the courts will recognize if anything happens to one of the parties to the marriage. We know of many instances where the family have left either party to the marriage in abject poverty by collecting all properties and money on the pretext that it belongs to them. Where there are children from this union, it it even more difficult. Let us make our traditional practices less negative especially towards women and all will embrace willingly.

I'm sorry but my church "wedding" would still not be legal. You can go to the registrar or the court it will still not cost you even your "white" wedding dress

The author wrote nothing that is atheistic. He acknowledged that Christians need to bless their marriage at little cost. Is that not what Christianity is about?

The Ghanaian traditional wedding has to happen it is our culture. You cannot avoid that out its costs. It depends on how big you want it anyway. I'm pretty much sure you can pay for the whole Ghanaian traditional wedding ceremony with the money that you would use for you reception hall alone. I agree when she says civilisation mission because if we had not been colonised (if we had not been forced to be made civil and proper) we would not talk of a western world marriage . It's the same with hair relaxers . If we had not been Introduced to them in pretty much sure a lot of black women would be happy wearing their natural hair.

When you are a christian you do what the Bible say not what the church say.
Some honourable lady and gent should please refer to the Bible in one instance where it is written or stated implicitly and or explicitly that the power to unit man and woman in marriage is in the hands of a pastor, evangelist, prophet, bishop, etc.
the problem of man is the redefinition of everything God has put in place.
To the pastors and others in the category who bless people's marriage hmmmmmmmm when has God added this one too to our responsibilities?

Thanks for this Master piece. In fact, as a Ghanaian who live in Germany, I've had the opportunity of attending many Weddings and know for a fact that, you can't be wrong on this. Just want to add that even the Europeans are surprised at the deligence of the ghanaian marriage rites. My German Lady still insists if I don't bring her to Ghana to perform these traditional rites, then it means I don't Love her. Thus, here we're again with the problem of not appreciating and advancing our uniqueness as a People. Will not comment much since I've more on that to share. Let's be proud of what we've got by entreching our Rich cultural values for they're what will advance our course for true rennaisance.
