You want a casket from Aburokyire to cost 750 million cedis ($25,000) before your family will be scared away?
Your family can buy a made in Ghana quality casket for about 30 million cedis($1000) and save the family 25 million cedis.

Paying close to two thousand dollars for a casket is vanity when they could have bought a beautiful made in Ghana casket for about five hundred dollars.

I don't understand why people don't build beautiful concrete or aluminium vaults above ground instead of burying beautiful caskets underground.

On a more serious point, I think it is a way for a family to show their last respect. It may be vanity, but which aspect of our lives is not?
I hope when it comes to my turn, I get laid (6-feet under)in a small corner/plot in my village with this epitaph: "A simple guy who did his best for humanity".

I have stated clearly in my will that I should be cremated when the time comes. But given what I know about Ghanaians, my will is unlikely to be respected by my 'abusua' when I'm not here.

Tony you have said it all. Increasing the tariffs on such items will definitely deter people. They should be very very expensive so people will say you are crazy to buy it. A casket which will be destroyed in the tomb to avoid being stolen. Ghanaians are something else. They always want to please people even when they do not have the means. Thank you.

Lest I forget. Do you know Ghanaians abroad are buying tombs as much as three thousand pounds in U.K to be buried inside if they don't want to be brought to Ghana or cremated there. Ridiculous is'nt it?

I always let it be known I want to be buried in Ghana in a simple humble place. I am no better than my parents who got simple burial.
Thanks Janet.

One of the quite "impressive" elements of style at the late President Mills' funeral was the spanking new govt "stretch limo"-style hearse that conveyed the body from the 37 Military Hospital to the State House. It fitted in perfectly with Ghanaian funerary culture - sending off the deceased in big style. We spend more money on the dead than on the living. We care more for funerals than good health!
The irony did not seem to dawn on the authorities that they could have spent the same amount of money possibly buying 2 fully-equipped ambulances that would be kept ready at all times and accompany the President everywhere, to save his life in emergencies!
