Peter, this article is well written. I feel sad to see the change in Ghana society. A country I have known and loved for a great many years. I am not Ghanian, but have its welfare close to my heart.

It has always been the custom for the able bodied person to give something to the needy ie the old, new mothers, bereaved etc. This is different from thinking that money is everything. People who know that money is everything are those who have to pay rent, buy food, pay to even go to the toilet. Those who live with such problems then have to rely on and work for those who have money to spare, and so those who have money to spare or have any source of money begin to use and abuse others and a vicious cycle is established. Those who live in the city must realize that sometimes those who live in the village are better off.

Peter, you have said well, but in a situation where there is no social support system, that is what you should expect. The majority who don't have will depend on the very few that has to survive. So please don't be surprise.

However, there is a little oversight in your discussion about the point your friend raised.
From his submission, a little pause indicates that he personally does not see money as everything but the very attitude of the very people (family, friends etc.)he wants to show love and vice versa compels him to think in terms and in search of 'money' before he goes to them. In other words, before he could sustain the 'friendship' and 'love' which you dwell much emphasis on, his social relations need money in return. The reason lies in the fact that they have
no other means to survive other than people's help hence, they only cherish people who could ensure this survival i.e. life and death.
In the light of the above logic, the causes of 'money is everything' mentality amongst Ghanaian youth lies in the very fundamentals of our economic situation born out of the new concept of western 'materialism' reaching us through varied and many means.
