The use of defaming and derogatory words and phrases has very little to do with ethnocentrism, but rather has everything to do with stupidity and imbecility. As an Ashanti, I do not subscribe to the notion of birthright as a determinant of superiority or dominance. Go to any private or public institution in Ghana and you will find Ashantis working under and respectfully following the leadership of non-Ashantis and/or non-Akans.
As a non-white leading white employees, I "sense" some not very pleasant reactions to my simple presence. But do I take those reactions as racist behavior? No, I do not. As long as I am able to maintain my professional and personal respect, I am least worried, though there is a little sense of pity, about the inadequacies of the emotionally and economically challenged individuals. Most of the time we laugh at our own inadequacies. I do not see the name-calling as ethnocentric, but rather as a false sense of "superiority" and/or dominance. These attitudes are held onto even when reality portrays otherwise; regrettably, they are perpetuated by those harboring the victim mentality.

The disparaging comments, threats and down-right negative actions that have over the years been taken against non-Akans by some prominent Akan leaders will haunt them every four years. Describing a whole tribe as “inward looking”; sacking 568 senior public servants because most were non-Akans; dismissing hundreds of senior civil servants by asking them to “proceed on leave” because they were mostly non-Akans; beating war drums in an imagined war against non-Akans, as in “all die be die” and “yen Akanfuo”; calling for genocide against some non-Akan tribes living in Ashanti Region; clandestinely planning to set up some military brigadiers as connivers with EC to rig the election simply because they are non-Akans; and describing a group of non-Akan tribes as nothing but primitive “hewers of cattle” turned out to be NPP's undoing. Next time, the NPP has to look for better means to make their party attractive to the non-Akan floating voters whose sensibilities have been insulted for so long by their Akan haters.

I will say it is more out of frustration than hate of Northerners and with that they will use the age old put down – pepeni aboa etc. I am Akan(Fanti and Akyem) and completely enamoured and rubbing my hands in glee in expectation for a future Bawumia presidency. It will be all systems go and Ghana will win. There will be a clear delineation of delivery as opposed to the business as usual that pertains. Believe you me, I am an Akan and perhaps through frustration may use the ‘P’ word but I will have the gentleman Bawumia any day than any Akan. Also in Nana Addo’s defence the ‘all-die-be die’ was deliberately blown out of proportion and used to malign him unfairly. He is not prejudice, he is married to a non-Akan and also he said ‘ye si yen Akanfuo’ which means that the perception about us is. And he is an Akan so nothing wrong with putting himself in the frame. I am Akan and I make no apologies for it, and no other ethnicity should, as even if they should, it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference as God has made it a done deal!

If somebody calls me an Ashanti or Fanti, do I have to be offended. The last time I heard, our brothers and sisters from the North were referred to as Eseremufuo (coming from the Savana region). Is this better than Pepefuo. Let me know and while you are at it talk about others referring to Akyems as Akyem dogs and Ewes as Torkosi or whatever that word is. All of us are guilty of not identifying ourselves as Ghanaians first so don't just identify one ethnic group and accuse them of this evil. I am an Asante and I know for a fact that we Asantes prefer the NPP because we don't really like the NDC for what they stand for; we don't dislike the NDC because of other tribes, but can we say the same for other tribes? Most non-Akans vote for the NDC because they see elections as an opportunity to punish Asantes. At least that is the only "tangible" reason the non-Akans give.... the evidence can be found on Ghanaweb.
Even the other Akan tribes have joined the non-Akans in this campaign. They NDC have managed to tag Akyems with Asantes because of Akufo-Addo. What the other Akan tribes forget is that if Nana were from their tribe, they would have done the same to them. Today it is the Asantes and Akyems, tomorrow it may be your tribe so watch out.
