Idiots out there. When you maneuvered your way through to get that scholarships ahead of better candidates, you felt happy. Now you are paying the price. How many Ghanaian students back at home are getting that kind of support from governments? You either rob and be killed or return home

As the saying goes, lies and propaganda have short lifespans. This govt came by lies and propaganda, telling the world they were the best thing since Jesus and gullible ghanaians believed them. They did propaganda about sending students to Cuba instead of expanding the facilities back home and now the reality has hit.
I sympathise with you for you are not the only ones. Kids sent to Britain under similar deception are facing the same fate.
I can only wish you all the best and hope something turns up soon.

No amount of what you people claimed to be passing through, should be a justification for robbery in a foreign land or anywhere. Have you people also taken into account the damage your actions have had on this country, of a population of about 25 million or so? Why have you all not engaged in the robbery, but just three of your mates? Are you people, the very first to be sent to such program? In as much as we all sympathise with your situations, we would equally not support your actions of robbery to justify your situations. Or unless, it is done to punish the government. The fact is that, those three guys are a mere criminals among you guys and should be punished severely. I wonder if you guys have for once taken into accout the diplomatic invonvenience between the two countries. There are thousands of equally or more qualified students here who, for one reasons or another have not had the opportunity you people have. Those robbers should be dealt with harshly! Meanwhile, the government should find out why the habitual delays in the remittance.Who knows if somebody is not taking this money and investing it, as has always been the case.

I am not among those who want everything to be abolished when things are failing, but one of the things I have called for its abolishment is scholarship secretariat. It is a system created by parties to loot and share the minimal resources we have. The question is what use is this program for our country in this age?
Obviously, the best science students are always in Ghana Medico, KNUST, CapeVars, UDS and now the New Allied Health School at HO studying medicine. So why and how do we send failed students to Cuba to study Medicine and expect them to be back to help the Nation? That is the question we should look into.
If you had not traveled to the Caribbeans, Central and South America you will not understand what I am saying here. In almost all my travels to these places, you meet these doctors and engineers working in these countries. Some have been there for years and married to their locals to get a stay to work there. After years of struggling there, some make it to the United States. Almost all refuse to go back home after their education.
Castro being the ever clever person ALWAYS demand that these students leave the Island when they finished their programs. With nothing in their pockets, these students run to the Caribbeans, Central or South America to offer their services for them. Those who run to USA or Canada thinking that they could work find out that they need to use years to study the boards and try harder against best students here to find spots in their residency programs before practicing. This is where you see or hear doctors driving cabs in aborokyie. Also, don't forget that black medical students are even discriminated in Cuba where most patients don't even allow them to touch them while doing their clinical studies. These are all facts and had been recounted several times by African students who had been there.
Yet, for stupid reasons and with our backward mentality, we keep on sending fool-soldiers of the parties and relatives of moron politicians like Ablakwa, Sir John and Mahama to almost every country on this earth to study. Study for what? And simultaneously, we keep on bringing Cuba doctors to Ghana every year to Ghana to come and help, while paying huge amount of money to engineers and consultants to come to Ghana to help us in everything, including writing our own marriage laws. My God, why are we so stupid and heartless to our Nation?
They have never put a system in place to check on these students to come back. The papers the contracts are written on are not worth to pee on. No one comes back to the come country after their studies and nothing or nobody forces them to put their names on "wanted list" to bring them back. So we keep on spending moneys upon moneys, not only in Cuba but places like Morocco, Libya, Algeria, Malaysia, Turkey, you just name it.
I met a girl who was on scholarship in North Dakota for her undergraduate studies some years ago. And I asked her what she was studying, "business," that was her answer to me. Fact is, she just traveled to the States and asked her father to get someone at Scholarship secretariat to get her scholarship. This is what is happening to our country. The last time I heard about her, she was also complaining about how JAK's government was trying to cut her sponsorship because she was NON-AKAN. This was during Kufuor's time.
No one sits down to calculate how much the government is spending on these useless students who will never come back to Ghana to help. The Nation does not even know how many we are sponsoring abroad and no one ask anything about it. Just imagine if we had 5,000 (the least, it could be over 10,000) students all over around the world and we are spending $5,000 (foreign tuition in America or elsewhere could be over $10,000) annually; that means we are throwing away $25 million away and that is the least it could be over $50 million to $100 million annually. Yet, we go and borrow $5 million from some countries . That this makes any sense to anyone.
But no party in Ghana is prepared to put a stop on this menace because that is the gravy train for their people. With all the money we pay to the President and his numerous ministers and their deputies and then the MPs, including their ex-gratias, how can this Nation move forward or be developed? We have not forgotten the numerous public servants the government is paying, including over 40 people cutting the grass on flagstaff and those working for Lordina, traveling around and donating gifts like there is no tomorrow
If Cuba with all its sanctions and embargo for over 50 years had been able to build such great medical schools for them to take care of other Nations, why can't we learn from them and do the same? Obviously, there is nothing new going on in their hospitals or medical schools because of the embargo, but Castro had been clever and use his common sense to benefit from that program. Anytime, you see our students going to Cuba to study or their doctors coming to Ghana to 'experiment' on our people, it had not been free; we pay Castro with money. This is how Cuba has been able sustain itself. Can't we do the same.
What a bunch of useless leaders destroying our country. Abolish the scholarship secretariat right now!

I'm sorry for these poor students and what they might be going through. I was also a foreign student some few years ago, not on government scholarship though so I understand their frustrations. But my question is how come all the students are either northerners or from the Volta region? Were they the only smart ones in Ghana? What's was the criteria for selecting the students? Was it on merit, income based, or students of particular tribes? Can somebody explain this to me? One Sarpong wrote about it last week, I verified it myself, and it's true! Can somebody explain this to me? I just can't get it! Thanks.

There is no process in Ghana, government or private, which is transparent. Our elections are not transparent because the nomination process for people to compete at the party level and or inter party level are bought and sold to the rich class. It is a fact that scholarship awards for prospective students to study abroad has been nothing but prizes for Ghana's politically connected. Why should a nation which seems to pay its politicians more than its private and or public workers continue to reserve scholarship awards for the children of the relatively well paid Ghanaians? Would it not be equitable to reserve scholarships for Ghana's poor but demonstrable sharp minds from small town Ghana? And if you guys, Naseem and company, have parents with connections to secure those scholarship for you why not contact those parents when running out of funds? Oh I forgot, in Ghana there is no planning; we react to events.

Were we not told that the government had secured all the funds for the awardees? How come. this is Ghana for you. Having been in Cuba for a while, will you just admit that you could have as well remained in Ghana to do your education rather than to be handpicked because of where you belong, to study in Cuba? Time will tell. It is a lesson for all who condone and connive with nepotism and favoritism. What a country? What a people who are ruling us? God save Ghana.

HOW WILL IT SOUND TO BE LOOKED UPON AS A THIEF OR THIEVES BY YOUR OTHER STUDENTS. ALTHOUGH YOU ARE SUFFERING, AS IS NORMAL IN NATURE, THE AMBASSADOR IS THERE TO BAIL ANY OF YOU OUT UNTIL YOUR MONIES COME. BUT WILL STEALING SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM?
