Hello Sarps,
Your article makes a compelling case for why the government, in our part of the world, should not own or operate any business besides infrastructural utilities such as highway construction, defence and police services.
We can recall the Nkrumah's utopian Workers Brigade enterprises. Then, and as at now, our philosophy or attitude towards government operated agro-business was and is the same - "Aban Adwuma" - you hurt no one really if you steal from it. No matter how you perform, you will get your wages at the end of the month.
Why else will the so-called Northern educated elites, whom one would have thought, will be intimately familiar with the crippling poverty and wants of their people, and therefore give of their best to narrow the perceived gap between the North and the South, will be the ones to wickedly deny their people of an opportunity to escape the vicious circle of poverty? They don't give a damn, and the reason why is not farfetched. They themselves grew up poor, perhaps they are the first in their families to obtain a university education, and they see their appointments as opportune time to lord over and amass wealth for themselves, not to create one for their peoples.
Regrettably, this is the story of Ghana and Africa. We find it alluring, the moral virtues inherent in socialism, communism, and religion - from each according to your best efforts, and to each according to your needs - kind of the state assuming ownership and control of all the productive forces, and the state equitably distributing the collective wealth to all. However, this moral canon inherent in socialism and mainstream religion, runs contrary to the true nature of man - greed and corruption tendencies.
One should not even partner with the Ghana government -the so-called PPP (Private-Public-Partnership) - if you can afford and avoid it, as to do so will open your business up for the government to channel and offload its corrupt party apparatchiks into your business to milk and run it down.
Good write up. Bravo!

Thanks for your immense contribution to this article. SADA operation has exposed the inability of government to run or operate any business efficiently.
The sad part about SADA is that, we don't see Northerners who should be upset about how a few of them are hijacking the effort of Ghanaians to develop the North and in some instances even defending these officials because they are all Northerners.
Imagine what the same Northerners would have done if these officials stealing SADA money have been Akans, Gas or Ewes.. 5, 10, 15 or twenty years from now, we will see the same people blaming others for their under development.

Sada is divisive and tribalistic when you have a Ghanaian organization that employ only Northerners and it is a no go area for other tribes when all Ghanaians tax money is use to fund this organization.
Northerners don't see anything wrong with this tribalistic organization . There is no place in Ghana for such plain discriminatory nonsense. I agree Sada has good intention to develop the north but that does not mean only Northerners should be employed there. I agree with the Author sada projects should be done by the ministries.

How can SADA employ a Consultant and then contract with an outsider not working for SADA to perform the same consulting duties they have an employee for? What is SADA Officials doing in Turkey? Do they need to go to Turkey to know how to rear Guinea Fowl or how to plant trees? Gilbert Seidu Iddi has been asked to refund some 226, 000 Ghana cedis to SADA, being the cost of unapproved trip to Turkey on behalf of some district assemblies.

The movers and shakers in the high echelons of power within the PNDC/NDC have always been bereft of ideas. Their power brokers never boasted of original and critical thinkers and have always stolen ideas from their main, formidable and dreaded opponents, the NPP.
Original ideas can be borrowed or stolen but they can never be executed in its purity and originality like its originator/innovator. For example the JSS concept, the brain child of the erstwhile Busia administration was still on the drawing board when they were overthrown by Col Akyeampong but the PNDC stole it and made a mess of it, defeating its original purpose when they suddenly found themselves in power.
The same can be said of this SADA but we don't need to dump a noble and worthy idea just because it has been poorly and maliciously implemented. This is not about the North but Ghana. When one part of Ghana succeeds/fails we all succeed/fail and we all must rejoice or mourn together. Saving SADA is not a mission impossible and we ought to make it a national priority regardless of which party is in power. If the NDC isn't able to rescue it then it becomes a major talking point for control of the presidency in 2016. The NPP or whichever party is in power should do all it takes to save SADA. Obviously the present administration never perceived the entire picture in their minds eye but only saw the money grabbing/get rich quick prospect that it fore-shadowed. We can and ought to save SADA for the sake of the motherland.

Justice is right in calling for the abolition of SADA, and I would add GYEEDA as well. There is too much duplication in Ghana's governance system.
Didn't there use to be a Regional Development Corporation which took care of the development of ALL the regions of Ghana? Is it still around? Why can't it be resuscitated to take care of these huge sums of money that are being poured down the drain?
Surely, if it was a national, rather than a regional thing that only looks at one corner of Ghana, this situation whereby everybody employed by the organisation, including consultans, has to come from just one part of the country could be avoided.
I am sure there are NGOs in the country that could have supervised the planting of trees, rearing of guinea fowls, and other such projects with much better efficiency and accountablilty!
We need diversification. Governmnet seems to be taking on too much, unless of course it is a deliberate scheme to siphon money, as the operations of SADA and GYEEDA have amply demonstrated!

We don't need SADA to carry out developmental projects in the North. We can get more than even by lodging the SADA funds in the ministries to carry out these projects without paying more salaries for these people run around the world doing nothing.
