I sometimes wonder why Dr Kwame Nkrumah made a fatal mistake of declaring himself President for life and a one Party state when his political power was not even being threatened through the ballot box. I believe Nkrumah could have continued to win elections legitimately or illegitimatly for the rest of his life as evidenced by his rigging of the 1964 referendum that made Ghana a one party state with an incredulous 99.91% winning margin that had the word rigging was written all over it. What kind of devil got into him to make that fatal mistake of declaring himself President for life, we will never know.

But as why the Great Kwame Nkrumah would have gone to the extent to declare himself a life time president ( if conclusively so...because my research points to the fact that it was rather a proposal in parliament more so than anything else)...
Your article totalling whitewashed or intentionally left out the kind of opposition party that existed at that time.
If my memory doesn't fail me, Busia's UP party was nothing but an extremely violent and subversive and indisciplined Organisation that opposed every developmental project Kwame Nkrumah had embarked upon. So their relevance in parliament was virtually detrimental to the very development and stability of the country. This is not the place to even start recounting the numerous acts of terrorism that came to characterise the UP tradition.
Also by 1964, the western powers (British and the American govts) grew increasing tired of Kwame Nkrumah's power and influence over the continent as well as the world over due to his influence in the Non-Aligned Movement...so measures were taken to make him unpopular in his own country by was of a strategic drop in price in cocoa and gold and the freezing of loans to his government --all in the effort to effect a "regime change". It is much the same as the sections or embargo placed on Cuba and Zimbabwe all in the effort to render Castro and Mugabe as failures to their citizenry hence facilitate a regime change.
Also, from what I recall, if I got my dates right, there was a time that the several parties had to be banned from parliament because they were not national in nature or formation; meaning, the UP Party was mostly just present in the Ashanti region while the Northern People Party only had offices in the northern enclave. And there is a provision in the constitution at that time that prohibited tribal/ethnic based parties hence these parties had to be banned.
I think we need to put all that in perspective when we discuss or debate the legacy or fallacy of the great Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

SARP, you cannot shot a great idea. You can topple a democratically elected government of Kwame Nkrumah but you cannot erase, wipe or wish away his profound ideas and ideals meant for people of African decent. Sarpong, did you ever know that Kwame Nkrumah was on radar of the American and British secret service before he came back to the Gold Coast? Go to the British National Archives website for such reports.
SARPONG your attempt to seduce the untrained mind with patchwork and thereafter appease your Mate Meho base in a backstabber manner is so transparent. SARPONG, if you want know about Kwame Nkrumah read his books. That way you will get to have a clear idea of who the man Nkrumah was. According to the wise saying: “ No Prophet is Welcome in his Own Hometown.” You all that patchwork but deliberated omitted the stumbling block his rivalries put his forward march for a cohesive Ghana and a united Africa.
After over hundred years of British dictatorship rule in Gold Coast later Ghana was not left with a single factory. We had to import everything form Britain or overseas.. Kwame Nkrumah came to reverse that only to see his works shattered by a disgruntled Mate Meho few. By the departure of KN Ghana had over 69 factories and over forty state farms corp, strategically placed in all the regions. Unemployment was not known. Ghanaians had work within their proximity or district there was no need to travel Accra-Tema, Kumasi or the twin city Sekondi/Takoradi. All that changed after the ill-fated 1966 coup.
SARPONG, stop peddling FAT lies that the factories were standing still as of 1964 when more of them were coming into operation that year. Investors don’t invest where they feel insecure. There were so many investments from Japan(Sanyo), GermanyTema Food Complex), Netherlands (Uniliver), Swiss(Nestle) Canada(TV) USA even UK( Katamanto Gin).
Can 200 million pounds build the entire infrastructure that Nkrumah and factories Kwame Nkrumah put in place? The Ghana government contributed 37 million pounds to construction of Akosombo dam project. The Tema Harbour and township consumed another 18 million pounds, Buying 14 fleet of ships for Black Star Line. Buying of planes for Ghana Airways. Ghana Navy and Ships, Building of Cocoa House and Liberty house. The construction of the Accra ring road. Black Star Sq.Double track railways to connect Kotoku and Huni valley etc Not mention free health care and education. Please look around Ghana and if you are not bias you will admit the great works of Nkrumah. The Axioms of Kwame Nkrumah Lives!

Unfortunately by the 60s the” Work and Happiness” slogan had changed to “tighten your belt” and essential commodities (milk, sardine etc.) were in short supply. The economy was not doing well and Ghanaians were unhappy with general conditions which made it easy to topple him with the help of the US.
His downfall was he was taken the country more and more into socialism with the help of countries like the Soviet Union, which meant folks were slowly losing their individual freedoms. Many of the factories were beginning to suffer due to the economic downturn and lack of raw materials; and Ghana Airways for example was being run at a loss. Also note that in those days it was common to be on the CIA radar, many of America’s own citizens were being watched. Sure, as Snowden would let us know, it seems that “all of us” if you have a phone or get on the Internet may be on the CIA radar.
The upside is Nkrumah at least had a vision, though his ambition to expand his power clouded the vision along the way, which resulted in his downfall.

Not what you are told, I lived it and all that you are saying was making rounds back then. That was made up and led to YESI YESI or AKE AKE slogan
Ask whether ideal milk produced by Nestle were available?
Ask whether sardines produced by Tema Food Complex were available?
Ask whether Volta corned beef
produced at Bolgataga were available?
Ask whether ideal tin tomato produced by Nsawan Canary were available?
What sort of utter nonsense is taken the Country towards socialism when we had free market economy and insetors were all over the place in Ghana. The only Change was foreign firms like CFAO,UTC, SCAO etc were not making all the profits because Ghana had its importer which was GNTC. The imports of were being shipped by BSL all that made the foreign merchants somewhat irrelevant so they started crying foul. Look those who never saw or lived it shold at best ask or better shut it. Nkrumah was fighting at two fronts both internal and external enemies of Ghana.
The Accra International Airport and the Labadi Trade Fair site was completed in 1966 and was due to be opened in march of that year. The Notorious Liars Council who toppled Nkrumah were overwhelmed by what they saw so they had to postpone the Int. Trade Fair for a complete year. Ghana Held an Int. Trade Fair when Malaysia, Singapore never knew how to hold such an International Event.
STOP THE LIES. IT DOESN'T HELP. Ghana has been thrown over 100 years back due to this ill-fated coup. We are still paying a heavy price for this silly 1966 coup. Nkrumah Lives!

The difference between you and me is I can be objective -- you are not the only one who lived it and to let you know my own father who is well known was in the Nkrumah government, so I remember how jittery my father was about the economy and the many long meetings he attended. I had relatives who were in Nkrumah's security detail(due to my dad's connection) and stayed on with him in Guinea until he died to return home. When Acheapong came to power my father and others wanted to bring sick Nkrumah back to spend his last days in Ghana but found out it he was too sick to make the trip. May be the difference is I went to a private school with no young pioneers, so did not get brain washed. Those are the facts no matter how hard you try to whitewash it.

Nana Ansah, I have no qualms Nkrumah did well economically though he ran into a jigsaw after exhausting the financial resource he got from the colonial masters.
My problem with Nkrumah as keep telling you is not whether he failed economically or not which I think despite all the problems he faced, he did well.
My problem with him is his one party rule and declaring himself President for life. What if voters wanted to vote him out? We have to wait for him to die?
Your answer the last time that people were throwing bombs at him and therefore that forced him to declare himself President for life is untenable. We have laws at that time that made it a criminal offence to attempt to kill any human being let alone President. People who attempted to kill him should have been arrested and prosecuted and if found guilty punished as the law stipulates. The punishment of people trying to kill him was not for him to declare himself President for life and denying the people their rights in choosing their leaders.
"Can 200 million pounds build the entire infrastructure that Nkrumah and factories Kwame Nkrumah put in place?"
NANA ANSAH, Nkrumah had other revenues from gold, cocoa, Timber, taxes and other natural resources revenues he collected from 1957 to 1966 and even if he collected 40 million pounds a year for nine years, that was another 360 million pounds. It was not like we did not sell cocoa, gold, timber and other natural resources for all the nine years he was the President or Prime Minister.
'Unemployment was not known.'
NANA ANSAH, stop telling tall tales. From 1960 to 1965, world cocoa prices plummeted, and the enormous development spending begun by Nkrumah four years earlier, severely impacted the country's economy. Foreign exchange and government's reserves shrank and disappeared. Unemployment rose dramatically. Food prices skyrocketed up over 250% from 1957 levels and up a phenomenal 66% in 1965. Eventually, there were massive food and essentials shortages effecting every area, sector and individual in Ghana.
"There were so many investments from Japan(Sanyo), GermanyTema Food Complex), Netherlands (Uniliver), Swiss(Nestle) Canada(TV) USA even UK( Katamanto Gin)."
What a paradox, NANA ANSAH, you cannot have it both ways. You are the same person that is telling us these Imperialist planned economic coup against Nkrumah by destabilizing the economy and now you are telling us these same people were investing so much in the economy, which is which? SARPONG, how often should you be told that Nkrumah did not receive resources from the British dictators but that Money was accrued between 1951 and 1957 when Nkrumah took over Business?
The British and Europe were broke after the second world war. Britain and Europe had to be bailed by USA Marshall plan so stop peddling the lies of the British leaving us any money. The BRITS were BROKE.Period!
Is it not a shame after over 100 years not a single factory was built and then making childish claims that we were left 200 Million Pounds all that against the backdrop of our rich resources?!
Ghana was not in the reverse gear when the ill-fated 1966 coup took place. We were delveloping faster than any other African state. Our Peers were South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, We were far ahead of China and India. As a lad I collected Money on the streets of Accra to help India and China when they were hit by severe famine in the 60's
Sarpong, private investors go where they can make Money. They only stop when they are barred from the goverments to do so. I am not making Claims. All these firms were built between 1960 and 1965 and still there today thanks to the foresight of Nkrumah.
SARP, Stop putting words into my mouth. This is what I wrote. The bill to make Ghana one party state and Nkrumah life president was passed by parliament in 1964 which admittedly I erroneously typoed 1965 for which it became a fodder for you. How petty!

Received, accrued or you can use whatever lexicon you want, he came to the Presidency with 200 million pounds or whatever and got at least 300 million pounds during his nine years as the President of Ghana from 1957 to 1966.
"Ghana was not in the reverse gear when the ill-fated 1966 coup took place. We were delveloping faster than any other African state. I know that is the lie you want to become truth but the records are there and those people who live through it some of them are still alive so you cannot be the custodian of what was true or not.
The truth is that;
From 1960 to 1965, world cocoa prices plummeted, and the enormous development spending begun by Nkrumah four years earlier, severely impacted the country's economy. Econmic growth, which had ranged from 9% to 12% per annum until 1960, dropped to 2% to 3%, insufficient to sustain a population expanding at almost 3% per year.
Nkrumah's response was an austere socialist budget which imposed flawed Marxist concepts of economic resuscitation on the population, primarily through harsh and unrealistic taxation. Financial mismanagement and economic chaos increased and the country was eventually poised at the brink of national bankruptcy and international disgrace.
Always nice to bang heads with my senior brother NANA ANSAH on this issue.
It is not my intention to change any CPPian to believe me because they are reprobates who need M15 and CIA debriefing to help them get out their robotic thinking that, Nkrumah was infallible.

Kwameh Nkrumah (KV 2/1847-1851)
Nkrumah (1909-1972) was the first prime minister and later president of Ghana. While studying in the United States during the Second World War, he came to the attention of the Security Service in 1942 when it was informed of an anti-British speech he had made at a meeting on The Role of the Negro in the War Effort in Philadelphia. As there was nothing specific to link Nkrumah to Communism, no further steps were taken at this time.
By 1947 Nkrumah was living and studying in London and his name began to appear regularly in intercepted telephone and mail communications with other targets. It became clear he was in regular contact with various left-wing individuals and organisations. These early exchanges are all recorded in KV 2/1847 (1942-1949). In July 1947, the Security Service passed a warning about Nkrumah to the police in the Gold Coast, and careful note was made of references to Nkrumah in intercepts, though he does not seem to have been targeted himself. Nkrumah was arrested in the Gold Coast in connection with riotous unrest there in March 1948, at which time documents associating Nkrumah with a plan to form "The Circle" (a hitherto unknown group seeking to establish a pan-West African socialist republic) were found. The file includes a photograph of Nkrumah attached to a Gold Coast police personality report (serial 61).
The four more files of similar material on Nkrumah give a large amount of detail about his activities at this time, but also show that he was not specifically targeted by the Service. KV 2/1848 covers 1949-1950, and includes (at serial 92) a case summary showing the Service's view of his political beliefs at this time: "His interest in Communism may well be prompted only by his desire to enlist any aid in the furtherance of his own aims in West Africa." The first elections in the Gold Coast, in which Nkrumah emerged as the leader in waiting of independent Ghana, are covered in KV 2/1849 (1950-1951). This file includes reports on Nkrumah's return to Britain (serial 157a). In KV 2/1850 (1951-1953) the chief point of interest is information surrounding George Padmore's arrival in the Gold Coast to work with Nkrumah, and their partnership is recorded in some detail in this file and in KV 2/1851 (1953).

Mr Sarpong the husband replied, "All I wanted to do was to fuck your brains out, and suck your tits dry on the 24 February 1966 ."
Then, as the wife undressed, she asked, "What are you thinking now?"
He replied, "It looks as if I did a pretty good job."

A typical Mate Meho tribalist "analysis".These primitive and violent tribalists never mention the violent acts of their "forefathers"(NLM/UP leaders - Danquah,Busia,Mallam Tula,Baffuor Osei Akoto) - after they were defeated at the polls.Nor do they mention the assassination attempts on Osagyefo, the murder of innocent Gold Coasters/Ghanaians - including Krobo Edusei's sister in Kumasi.
Nkrumah never executed any of these NLM/UP terrorists, including Danquah and Obetsebe-Lamptey.Had they been in the U.S,especially in Texas(where Sarpong lives),they would have been burned in electric chair in no time.
In the minds of these primitive tribalists,if Danquah and his ilk did not win the elections, then traditional chiefs should have ruled the Gold Coast/Ghana.And these are the same people parading around here as "democrats",my foot!!
One even wonders whether all the free education Nkrumah gave these folks really brought them any enlightenment.
By the way, does Sarpong understand what Marxist/Communist ideology is?

The writer writes about all the ambitious projects undertook by KN in order to move the nation, but he failed to realize that a newly decolonized nation rushing to become a producing nation rather than raw material exporting nation was not the reason our independence was almost given us on a silver platter hence the the fix of the cocoa price to take a nose dive in order to halt the train KN had set in motion.
Nkrumah being a dictator and life president was just many of the excuses his enemies used and continue to use in order not to be accused as traitors and anti Africans, because if they weren't really anti Ghana/Africa development, why on earth do they have to deliberately abandon projects that are of national interest and would have propelled us in to a great nation.
What gold refinery factory being built at Tarkwa has to do with a dictator/life-president? And do silos for grain storage has to be hated with the same passion reserved for Nkrumah?
And in whose interest these national projects were threatening to extent of deliberately doing away with them?
Was the new leaders listening to their pay masters other than themselves in the interest of the masses of Ghana or not?
Why do they have to burn books.
The last a library was burned down was 2000 years ago when anti-Black crusade led by one Alexander of Macedonia who touched down a whole Knowledge blacks had put down in books over 20,000 years in ancient Egypt.
The same play book was visited last two years in Mali by another kind of anti-black/Africa.
Wouldn't we be so far by now if the Busia/Danquah crowd had not intentionally abandoned all projects and intentionally run down factories that they termed socialist/communist?
The last time I checked, the definition of silos is not socialism.

If I understand you correctly, what you are saying is that, Nkrumah was doing so much better economically it didn't matter whether he was a Dictator or President for life and that my friend is really pathetic.
Maybe some of you will sell your liberty including your freedom for free speech and exercising your right to choose your leaders, some of us value our God giving rights to freedom than economic prosperity. Have you heard the idiom, GIVE ME LIBERTY OR DEATH?
I guess you will like to live in Gambia under Yahya Jammeh or North Korea. Did you live in Nkrumah's time to experience his brutal dictatorship ten times worse than what Yahya Jammeh is doing in Gambia?
The difference between you and I is that, you are willing to sell your dignity for milk and butter which I am not willing to do.

Western philosophy is full of hypocrisy and double standard approach to issues. Britain from where you Justice Sarpong is writing from has a life queen since 1951 and she is still on the thrown. The British Queen Elizabeth was not elected under the process of Universal Adult Suffrage, she was selected by her father King George who was also install for life to the thrown and as the head of state. Friends of NATO are monarchies and some of its members are monarchies. Justice Sarpong and others who are against Africa and her forward march never call on other rules for life to abdicate their seat. Thus the hypocrisy of Kwame Nkrumah being a president for life is undemocratic, when the very process was through the process of universal adult suffrage.
It is most absurd when a person living under European monarchy do not want to have an African monarchy since the latter will not be the doll of the European.
Nation building is a painful and streneous task. It is compared with a child who just about to take his first steps. If the child takes a step and fall it does not mean that we should stop him from trying to walk, or he will never walk. Many advance countries passed through such process and those which do not want to fall and stand find themselves in thrall of others.
It has now been proved from all quarters that Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah means well for Ghana, Africa and the world in whole. That in a cruel age he build and seek peace not fearing injury nor insults. He sought justice and peace for all without regard to their race and colour of skin, that he gave the right to Ghanaian woman to vote and progress in all aspects of human endeavour, and to every Ghanaian the same. A month ago I had audience with a relative of who was a typist in Kwame Nkrumah's office. He told me of the troubles Nkrumah had even in his small office that some junior civil servants posted there did everything to undermine the man. What he told me confirmed what Comrades Jantuah, S.S. Baffour-Awuah and others said about Nkrumah that he is man of men, humanist and a true democrat.

Justice,
This is an excelent piece. Every honest Ghanaian aged 60 and over can identify with this concise history of Nkrumah's rule that you have presented here.
Basically, Nkrumah set out to be another Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore) or Tunku Abdul Rahman (Malaysia). Lee succeeded because he used democratic all-inclusive means. Lee was a politician through and through, Kwame Nkrumah and Tunku were revolutuonaries who did not know how to play the political game of the 20th century. I am afraid, revolutionaries like Mugabe, Jammeh, and the Lee (Bum guy in North Korea, among others), are still not learning the game.
Kwame Nkrumah took on the West when our only backbone was cocoa, whose sale price was dictated by the West. Thus from a high of £1500/per ton at independence, the price of cocoa had fallen to about £300/ton by late 1965.
My uncles and grand uncles were paid with a useless piece of paper called "chit." Most of them lost theirs in a matter of weeks. Meanwhile they needed inputs to keep their farms going.
With the exception of a few factories, most of the inudstries in Arthur Lewis' "Import Substitutuon Programme"
depended on imports for everything, including the Managing Director's dust bin! Did we really need the CIA?
With a population of just 6 million at independence, the market was simply not there for the goods that we were producing. Because of Ghana's antagonistic stand at international fora, the French especially, had persuaded their former colonies, with subsidies, to produce nearly everything that Ghana was producing, so they wouldn't buy from us. The writing was clearly on the wall, except that the majority of the low IQ people that Nkrumah surrounded himself with, could not come to terms with. Or with the proverbial "King's new clothes," were telling him he was still "the Show Boy of Africa."
With respect to the unbriddled borrowing and dissipation of public funds, Mahama being a child of the CPP family has embarked on that very dangerous path. With people like Fiifi Kwetey, Ayariga and Wampah urging him on, the future of Ghana is bleak indeed!
Well done Justice.

My dear Sarpong, the widely held notion that Nkrumah declared himself this or that, is not true. It is his supporters that bestowed that on him. The mistake he made was not refusing to accept it.
The guy craved for approval, so he just went with the flow and enjoyed all the many accolades splashed on him. I bet he did not even initially understand some of the appellations tagged on him by that eloquent Akuapem sage of a Linguist.
Besides, it is the one-party State declaration by the then majority in Parliament that lent any credibility to the claim you are making. Therefore, blame it on the CPP majority, instead. But let me warn you that the CPP would as well conveniently rebuff that charge saying that since the Opposition had voluntarily boycotted Parliament for a long time, it was only to affirm the existential fact of the absence of the Opposition that it declared the Nation one-Party State.
Let me hear your argument from that angle.

Why did he abolish the position of Vice president? I also remember that the accolade "Osagyefo" was initiated by some sycophntic chiefs. Why did he accept it?
Unfortunately, our voting pattern, with the exception of 1979, has not been very different since about 1954. Parliament of tHe First Republic was predominantly CPP. That was why the PDA for instance, was rushed through a "certificate of urgency" over two days!
The republicam referendum was won by 99.92%. An obviuos lie because there were very large and intensive pockets of opposition in nearly every region of Ghana. Sekondi-Takoradi had the largest population concentration in the Western Region and becaue of the unions, over 75% of the people opposed Kwame Nkrumah. Then there was Ashanti and Eastern Regions, plus the old Trans-Volta Togoland area. There was no way the yes vote could have been 99.9%! Nkrumah should have been aware of this, but he did not bother because it served his interest.
In my own local area, although I was only twelve then, we were given ballot papers to "go and vote for the cause". Three of us had decided to vote "No." When we entered the classroom, we discovered there was only ONE YES box and so decided not to cast our votes. Apparently someone was watching and that nearly landed our guardians in prison. I still remember the lecture I was given on this matter.
Our dishonest voting system is as old as Adam! That was all part of the tyranny of the CFirst Republic. Let us not run away from it.
We need to tell the history of Ghana's chequered development dispassionately otherwise we shall never ever make progress as a nation.

you know what? i use to preach dr. nkrumah like apostle paul preached christ jesus after his damascus experience. however, i had a change of mind about dr. nkrumah and every other politician, especially, after nkrumah confided in one of his closest pals namely k.s.b. asante in a private conversation that most of the know-how of the management of the rampant industies set up under his cpp government is with the nlm opposition members however the cpp foot-soldiers did not want the nlm members to come anywhere near the development of our own nation which he nkrumah could not put his feet down to set precedence for the emerging newly independent african countries that a government and opposition could work together for the betterment of the nation as the asians have been working in tandem with opposition to yield fine and peaceful results with booming economies. i guees, nkrumah studied in the usa and observed the british system of rule before he became a prime mister and eventually a president of ghana, so why did he stoop so low to his supporters or foot-soldiers who were not abreast with what was at stake?

Nkrumah was merely a political scoundrel whose understanding of independence was constricted to his ability to function as a veritable tyrant. He bequeathed to the continent a long dynasty of tyrants we are still struggling to overthrow. By his folly, he indirectly encouraged coup d'etats in Ghana because he brought the military into African politics through his offensive life presidency. This gave a good excuse for the military to overthrow him, and after tasting power, the military never left African politics. Thus Nkrumah is the curse of Africa's leadership conundrum. What is worse, he left a generation of indoctrinated retards who will forever bark, bleat and bray his name.
No president in Ghana was 5% as tyrannical as Nkrumah! That megalomaniac's name should therefore be properly placed in context of the worst leaders Ghana ever had.

Why was Nkrumah voted "Africa's Man of the Millennium"? In nine years as the leader of this country, he did ten times more for the whole of Ghana than you and your ancestors have done for your village.
