Danquah did not have to die so untimely and in those horrible circumstances. He died because of extremely violent political environment for which the CPP and the Opposition both have to be blamed.

Danquah did not have to die so untimely and in those horrible circumstances. He died because of extremely violent political environment for which the CPP and the Opposition both have to be blamed.
It is hard to claim Danquah was an innocent victim of an insane Dictator's rage. And it is hard to claim Nkrumah never wished him out of the way.
However, one thing is certain and that is: Had Nkrumah pursued Danquah's death as much as the Opposition pursued Nkrumah's, Danquah would have been dead much earlier.
Danquah's death cannot be said to be a collateral damage, but a casualty, of a passive War that did not aim at him, personally. He was, conveniently left to die when sick in jail. I strongly believe, however, that had he stayed healthy, Nkrumah would have released him from jail before too long. His death was said to have been a little too quick, if not sudden, at least unexpected by even Nkrumah.
I wonder if anyone ever interviewed Nkrumah on Danquah's demise.
It was a violent era we should never wish to relive.
May he and Nkrumah and Busia all rest in remorseful Peace!!

We must not discount the contribution of Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah and others. Danquah's work "the constitution of Akyem Abuakwa" convinced the Africans, the British and the world at large that the people of Ghana (Gold Coast) were ready for self government.
As one of the few African members of the legislative assembly he vehemently opposed the British decision to setup only one university for British West Africa in Nigeria. His action led to the decision to setup the University of Ghana - Legon.
All this was before Nkrumah came to the scene. But we must also not forget the immense contribution Nkrumah made.
