Now this is the true picture of corruption in Ghana. Thanks for bringing this to the notice of we all hypocrites who cover our tracks to blame only the big boys. Corruption at the grass root is more costly and dangerous than at the top. The top get theirs from the loaded and capable payers but, the lower level which is done in the offices are the ones killing the average Ghanaians who are struggling to make ends meet. Our actions and stand in this blame game is typical to that of a group of hunters who gang up on a lion for killing and eating up one of their sheep. They pretend or forget the night before, they had individually hunted and taken down an antelope each. To them, their take was good because it is food but they see the lion's take as cold blooded and a threat to their livelihood. We tend to forget that sweet or sour all food is food. It's time we start pointing fingers at ourselves and stop paying. It will be tough to begin but, we have the capacity to overcome this cancer if we really want to do it.

Akua,
I know what you are talking about because I went through a similar situation about 3 years ago when I came home to work on my house in Sekondi.
One important fact you are forgetting about though, is that the politicians become easy targets because they are elected to make the laws of our nation work effectively. So if they fail to do that but instead start engaging in activities they are supposedly empowered to eradicate, thereby, giving ligitimacy or credence to that activity, then of course the spotlight is going to be on them more. That's simple logic. It's because the politicians are doing it without any repercursions or accountablity that this disease has trickled down to the ordinary clerk in the lands office, the licensing office, Tema and Takoradi ports -all the way to the big boss in any local government office in the country. Every national or local government official can ask for bribe with impunity because they know they can get away with it. If the politicians made the laws work so that anyone caught will be jailed and lose his or her job, then people will be afraid to indulge in those illegal vices: then the politicians will be off everybody's radar.
As long as the politicians fail to do the jobs they were mandated to do, they will always be in our crosshairs.

The point he is trying to make is that corruption in Ghana is a very entrenched cultural practice which affects every facet of Ghanaian life. If you live in it and breath it all your life this is all you will come to know. The author is right. It is a hopeless situation because aside from it being pervasive it is also widely accepted culturally. It starts the moment you arrive at that old rickety airport called KIA, and you experience it again on your way out of the country. I cannot even go through the details of what one will be subjected to during one's stay in the country. I am sure a lot of visitors to the country have had a very negative experience when it comes to seeking services in a governmental department. Every damn official has perfected the art of soliciting unapproved money for services
The situation is pathetic and out of control. Just by asking Ghanaians to change their attitude when it comes to this social canker will not cut it.
Attitudes simply do not change unless you enforce it vigorously, backed by law. The laws must be enforceable and punishable without any respect to whoever is messing with it. The law must be no respecter of persons.
The law of Ghana is what I will describe as "the law of the jungle." It is non-existent for the most part, and even if it exited, no one cares to avail themselves of its existence. The lawyers and judges who are custodians of the law are clueless, and you know what, equally corrupt.
The system has always been broken, there has never been one in existence in the first place.
Fixes? There is no easy fix.
Please stay tuned for part 2

This is a true picture of corruption in little places in Ghana. We all have experienced it in one way or another. The truth is corruption big or small is detrimental to society. To add to Nana’s analysis, The government officials is well placed to extort money from those needing their services and pocket government revenue. The merchandise seller is poised to sell shoddy items to over maximise their income, the market seller will likely sell substandard food stuff to get more than enough to pay bribe for school admission for their wards. Not forgetting the able bodied youth who turns to armed robbery due to lack of employment. The ripple effect of corruption is enormous.
To minimise or eliminate corruption, we need viable policies and legislation that works. This can only come from the government. The president and ministers must set the pace by leading exemplary lives. The judiciary will have no choice but to pursue an impartial career. In short the moral and ethics of society should be upheld.

If that is what you think, the fact is, you either lack insight or foresight or both. Who isn't corrupt in Ghana? No one accepts it but fact are most of us are corrupt though personally I can confirm I am not. Because failing to offer or accept bribes in Ghana has cost me opportunities that should have been life-changing. I would never have left Ghana. But that is the price you pay to remain yourself. Do I regret, YES. But I would have regretted more if I woke up to find my conscience worrying me because I had been part of those lot who undermined the economy belonging to we all and the generations to come!
Where are we going with ill-gotten wealth? Cemetery?

I don't think it will be a difficult task to eradicate corruption in Ghana. I believe that we as a nation will need to have the will power to introduce effective and efficient legislations and institutions whose staff and those of others must be well remunerated just as we do for MPS/politicians, CEOS, presidential staffers, establish free hot telephone lines across the country, regions, districts, to enable people to report corrupt practices, embark on massive educational activities using the schools, follow such reports up and deal with the culprits appropriately. In situations where some people come to plead on behalf of such culprits they too must be prosecuted or fined too.
We also need to have an effective and efficient complaints procedure, prosecute, imprisoned offenders, or in some cases fine the culprits and people will begin to abide by such regulations that have been put in place. We also need to name and same culprits so as to serve as a deterrent to other.
The problem we have in Ghana is that people are poorly paid; the second kind of obstacle is very political where many politicians owe their careers and statuses to corruption and few of them, if any, will take a strong stand against corruption, either for fear of upsetting their own careers or the political status quo generally.
Civil society and the media can help by denouncing corruption and putting pressures on the government to deal with its corrupt officials. But the real impediments to the fight against corruption are as much the interests of the politico-administrative apparatus as the fatalism and ignorance of the victims, maintained by a culture of fear nurtured by those who benefit from corruption.
The private sector can also make an important contribution to the fight against corruption, by policing its own codes of conduct and sticking to high standards of governance.
It is the responsibility for Ghana as a country to draw up its own fighting strategies of implementing development projects such as housing which will not be purchased by party leaders and their friends but for the people, provide portable water, electricity, schools, good roads, and deal honestly with reports of corrupt officials, and punishing them appropriately.
The government must be transparent and make available full list names of public officials who buy or have bought state properties, include cars, buildings etc. and how much are paid for them and being accountable to the people.
Above all the government must be seen as promoting open, transparent and good governance and not to be seen as protecting its corrupt officials under party names which is often the problem.
Lets get going and we will be there. I don't think that sweeping corruption under the carpet is good for us, I think will result in Ghana been sold one day!!!!
