I had a similar situation when I went home for a visit with my family in September 2013. The incident happened close to Cape Vars junction when this moron just started overtaking more than 4 cars. My only saviour was the driver of the car in front of me when he started to pull unto the shoulder, which gave me a glimpse of what was happening in my lane. I also did a quick swerve unto the shoulder of the road and avoided a head-on collision with this moron. This would have probably killed me, my wife and my son who was in Ghana for the first time to visit his grandparents and other family members. Sad and scary.

Yes, many people are dying on our roads due to this unnecessary and thoughtless overtaking and dangerous driving. But it is not only 4-wheels and taxis. It involves all kinds of vehicles. I have seen cars heading in my direction on a dual lane road. Guess what. A police vehicle trying to beat traffic ahead of it therefore taking the other lane. I was saved by the grace of God, else there would have been a headon collision. On the Tema beach road, in the morning, you see all kinds of vehicles, normally driven by Police, Customs or Immigration officials speeding and doing unnecessary overtaking. You wonder why they dont leave home early if they want to avoid being late. And the Police stand there, looking on unconcerned.

THERE ARE MULTIPLE OF REASONS WHY WE HAVE ACCIDENTS. SOME ARE POOR DESIGNS, POOR TRAFFIC SIGNS AND BAD TRAINING AND EXAMINATION OF NEW DRIVERS BEFORE THEY ARE GIVEN THEIR LICENSES. BESIDE POOR DESIGN OF PASSING LANES FOR VEHICLES, MAINTENANCE ALSO PLAYS A PART. WHEN I WAS YOUNG THERE WERE MAINTENANCE DEPOTS ALONG MAJOR OR TRUNK ROADS TO IMPROVE UPON ROAD CONDITIONS BUT ONE CANNOT SEE SUCH FACILITIES ANYMORE. TRAFFIC SIGNS AND ROAD MARKINGS WILL GO A LONG WAY TO INCREASE ROAD SAFETY. ROAD MARKINGS SPECIALLY AT NIGHT WILL SAVE LIVES COUPLED WITH SIGNS SHOWING SPEED LIMITS ON CURVES AS WARNING TO MOTORISTS OF THE INHERENT DANGERS OF EXCEEDING THE POSTED LIMITS. GHANA NEEDS A COMPREHENSIVE ROAD DESIGN STANDARDS AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS .TO BE ENFORCED. THE POLICE MUST NOT TAKE IT LIGHTLY WHEN THEY SEE DRIVERS BREAKING ROAD SAFETY RULES. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE ENFORCEMENT IS LACKING BY GHANA POLICE UNITS AND BAD DRIVERS ARE BEING GIVEN FREE RIDE TO DO WHAT THEY WISH ON GHANA ROADS. AS LONG AS THE BAD DRIVERS THAT BREAK THE ROAD SAFETY RULES ARE NOT PUNISHED, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO CARRY ON WITH THEIR BAD BEHAVIORS.

Many do not live to tell their stories. How often do we see drivers overtake in curves, junctions, hill climbs and when the weather is foggy? We always see police cars sending the wives and children of senior officers to market and schools using the wrong lanes with their sirens blurring. What is wrong with us? My car was crushed on the Nungua Beach Road near the MATS on the 2nd of December. This Taxi- turned emergency vehicle was speeding down the opposite lane with an injured kid at the rear seat. Approaching the traffic light which was showing amber we slowed down. Then l heard 'BANG' in the rear. A stupid truck driver who only heaven could tell where he was looking and speeding to has ran into my VW Car. Absolutely mangling the whole back stretch. Luckily, l was the only occupant that day. I cannot tell what would have happened with the kids or other passengers in it. Let us STOP the unnecessary speeding and impatience.
