I was getting ready to mount a campaign to strip you of your PHD (You and Okoampa)until I read this one.
You need more o those but please, be careful not to give away our strategies. All kinds of people read this. If you are close to the Government, provide your ideas in private. If you care to write, please stop the political and tribal diatribe.

Bokor is being disingenuous and he knows it; big mining and oil conglomerates are ruthlessly powerful for the simple reason that they possess the capital and the technology to explore and bring to the surface the riches of the earth......Ghana lacks these two very important ingredients, and until such time that Ghana can provide the technical expertise and wherewithal to explore and mine its own resources it will be at the mercy of the big boys...Bokor is just throwing brickbats because he has nothing else to offer.....push the big international companies out of Africa and see our fortunes dwindle like a shriveled male organ after copulation...Bokor get real, you are misleading readers

It was shocking reading what President Mahama said at the WEF. It showed that the government of Ghana is dictated to by foreign companies and not only foreign companies. I am not sure if the decision to introduce the windfall tax was an Executive Order, by Legislative Regulation through parliament or primary legislation. Whichever method was used, the government's decision to suspend it because of blackmail by foreign companies who should be complying with rules, regulations and legislation in Ghana beggars belief. In fact, it's tantamount to Ghana giving up her sovereignty.
In any case, the foreign mining companies are currently laying off workers because they claim world prices of the precious metals have fallen. So, whilst President Mahama suspended his windfall tax for fear increasing unemployment through the lay-off by them, they still went ahead and laid off Ghanaian workers. So what did President Mahama get in return for not implementing the windfall tax? A slap on his face by the foreign mining companies? What a cheek?
These foreign companies can treat Ghanaians with contempt because the leadership are not smart enough. What President Mahama should have done to ward off the threat of massive lay off by the foreign mining companies was to pass new labour law that would make it more expensive to lay off workers. That way the companies would have thought twice before embarking on their blackmail. Unfortunately, in Ghana it is very cheap to sack workers. Some are sacked without any compensation after years of service. At best, they are given peanuts as redundancy packages.

No serious leader would ever say this on such a huge platform. As a leader you should know how to play hardball and that is precisely what most African leaders lack. We are in serious problem indeed.

"God has now given me the opportunity I needed to make it impossible for any intelligent person to make a remark like that again." Are we a rational human being?
Independence 'means' not only freedom but a chance to change attitudes. In the process, the African will emerge as a rational human being (in a 'true' light), as a person deserving of respect and as a member of a nation that deserves international respect. That respect is not for the expressive of hopelessness!!!

You do not play hard ball on the international stage. You play smart ball. It is like football or soccer as most call it nowadays. You may score a goal here and there once in a while if you kick the ball hard from the centre to the goal post, if you are lucky enough to pass the forwards, midfield, defense and the goal keeper. You are more likely to score a goal playing smart soccer with a rehearsed strategy.

And, as I pointed out… From now on, today, we must change our attitudes and our minds. We must realize that "from now on we are no longer a colonial but free and independent people. But also, as I pointed out, that also entails hard work. That new Africa is ready to fight his own battles and show that after all the black man is capable of managing his own affairs." Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah
I wish Rawlings can slap some sense into this lowlife in chief. What a low count! What sort of ragtag president is this? Are we being embargoed, or is it another john?
“…They will not allow us to implement a windfall tax in our country”, President Mahama said. The government, thus, has no other option but to put the tax on hold." No wonder the sun ever rises from the North!

What did the president hope to take home by his admission of his government's failure to collect taxes from taxpayers? What are the Kayoyes, taxi drivers and the entire taxpaying public doing? Let Kayoyes tell government to refrain from collecting any taxes from them else they will only carry foodstuff but nothing else. Let Taxi drivers demand the government must stop forcing them to pay any taxes else they would pick up only market women but not people working in government departments. Let the TUC demand that the government stop collecting tax from its members otherwise they would restrain their members from working in government departments. Ours is a listening government, and if we come up with such noble ultimatums, Mahama would pooh, pooh to the whole world that his government cannot collect any taxes from the citizens, so the world bank should send us some dole money to pay government ministers. It is as simple as that!

The 10%windfall tax did not work in Australia and many other countries. The mining companies are more powerful with resources and can bulldoze any single country at will. They brought down the former labor government in Australia and have done so in many other countries. You just have to be able to negotiate with these global heavyweights, they are powerful and you do not mess with them. They are part of the global movers and shakers,Mr.Bokor, please do not incite trouble,we need to negotiate our way out.All we need to do is create a win-win environment, where the government will reap the tax and also keep Ghanaians at work. This need creative thinkers and negotiating skills from our side not militancy.

So, what prevented the law makers from soliciting views from the mining companies and the Ghana Chamber of Mines to help them come out with a workable law on "windfall"?
You see, the problem has to do with the poor quality of leadership that Ghana has. If the law makers had been diligent, they would have gained the cooperation/support of the mining companies to get something good for Ghana.
Unfortunately, they are all deadwood and cannot do anything good for the country!!

Want to know what that clueless thief of a President did after chickening out before the foreign Gold Mines ? He chose the line of least resistance ....... Taxing uncomplaining Ghanaians to the death. Our taxes are now too heavy to carry, fuel and utility prices are now beyond affordable levels for the majority of us, and our living standards are the worst since we became an independent people. Mahama's lamentations and empty talk are very typical of him. The man talks loosely without considering the impact of what he says; and he makes impossible and empty promises within every blink of his eyes. Not long ago he came out to boast of having "bagged" US$1billion from Brazil, as if Brazilians owe him their taxes. Ask him when that money is coming and he cannot tell you. He visited Turkey and returned with the story that he had secured funding for a new international airport and a host of projects. Where is the airport and where are the projects?..........only in the mind of Mahama. Steal and Beg .......... Beg and Steal are the policies of his corrupt Government. Do not be surprised ......... it is possible that he entertained the hope that his Davos Lamentations would touch the hearts and purses of the participating developed countries to the advantage of he and his band of looters.
